To think the Sun has reached an all time low with it's front page today

Reeva Steenkamp is dead and the Sun still think it's acceptable to run pictures of her in sexy bikini poses.

Well exactly Belinda. It will always be the 'sexiest' picture they can find that they use. Sex sells, and idiots buy it.

But, BelindaCarlisle, women are still too often viewed as appendages of men precisely because of these sorts of portrayals of women in the media - it's all part of the same thing.

Everything about the front page sensationalised her murder, and trivialised and eroticised violence against women - it looked like it was going to be some sort of story about a "saucy romp", not about the horrific murder of a woman. There was no sympathy for Reeva Steenkamp - she wasn't even named on the front page, but was portrayed as an object to be leered at.

For those who are appalled and wish to protest, there's a petition, asking for The Sun to apologise - here

Also, some women's groups are urging people to complain to the PCC too - see here for example.

I totally agree Belinda.
And its a bit odd I think that people are saying because she's been murdered she shouldn't be shown in this way as some sort of mark of respect- yet she didnt mind being seen as a sex object to be leered over when alive.

Because on the day of One Billion Rising, The Sun has chosen to cover a story of a murdered woman tinged with possible domestic violence by plastering it's front page in her scantily clad body, simply to sell more copies. They didn't even consider her worthy of printing her name on the front page story about her own murder.

Yanbu I totally agree. I saw it today & thought it was the daily star until I realised it was about OP

OP, I'm so glad I'm not crazy. I saw it this morning and felt physically sick. I don't care if it was her job, they had lots of pictures of her yet they chose that one. Let's not be naive - they put it on there not to represent her at her job but to titillate. They were hoping their readers would get their rocks off over the almost naked body of a women who has just been murdered FFS.

In the Morning Star the front cover was ironically about the One Billion Rising protests against violence against women.

Yanbu and this was discussed on radio 5this evening, vile man saying it doesn't matter as she isn't alive to complain...

I think the message the Sun is sending out is "She's dead, but we can still stare at her tits."

Controversial I know but if I was that sexy I would have my obituary pic of me in bikini.

They have to target their readership and that demographic is typically horny aging builders who want to see some tits! They will print whatever it takes to sell the paper. You're right - that are lower than low but their readership defines the parameters of that standard.

The daily fail have a worse one of her posing pulling the string on a tie sided bikini, pure soft porn.

It's just on an inside pg., not the cover.

Oh god darkesteyes that's fucking horrible. Innocent until proven guilty I know, but perhaps the papers could save their sympathy for, y'know, the victim.

Post that headline if he's found innocent, by all means. But christ :(

I just retweeted the link by dark saying "and what about the anguish of Reevas family?!"

TBH if she chose to make money from the pics then thst is HER choice and she should not be judged for it because lets face it folks; she could. She was stunning. What is shite is that the sun implies that her death is more of a loss because she had a good rack etc. Shocking story and very sad.

Report
superstarheartbreaker · 16/02/2013 00:50

And I guess as she wouldn't have had a choice about the pics being published due to her being dead and all then the sun is a bunch of scum.

Report
Darkesteyes · 16/02/2013 00:51

exactly 5mad. I agree. Sport and celebrity seem to be seen as more important than a young woman who has lost her life and her grieving family and friends. i despair ffs.

Report
StuntGirl · 16/02/2013 00:53

I don't think anyone's judged her for posing for the photographs? They've judged The Sun for choosing to use them under these circumstances though...

I know dark its bloody depressing. I kust looked at op's fb page, the amount of support and victim blaming is horrid.

Report
Darkesteyes · 16/02/2013 01:06

I had a nasty feeling it would be like that on fb 5mad. I have avoided it today and nearly deactivated my account a few weeks back because of some class prejudice shown by some former acquaintances. fb seems to be a place for spouting all kinds of hate.,prejudice, sexism and mysogyny.
