AIBU?

to be furious with dh for eating cakes he knew were destined for the bin!

alfrex · 21/01/2013 14:57

OK. I bake a lot. And sometimes my cakes are beautiful, and we all enjoy them. But sometimes it does not go so well and the cakes come out sunk or burnt or still wet in the middle (if dh would get the fan fixed on the oven this would happen a lot less often, but that's another thread)

There is a system, dh and the children are well aware of it. If the cakes are good to eat, they either go in a freezer bag for later use, or in a sealed tin for use over the week, or on a plate on the side so that they can be eaten now. DH knows this and I never complain about him "sampling" even if th cakes are meant for after dinner or whatever. I bake a lot so there is usually something there if he fancies a nibble.

If the cakes are not up to scratch, they go in the bin as soon as they are cooled (or as soon as dh empties the bin - there's another thread there!)

so this morning dh saunters into the kitchen to get himself breakfast. I come in and find him cramming his mouth with the burnt, crappy cakes that were sitting in the bun tray by the bin. I was really pissed off and had a go at him for it. I can make really nice cakes and I make plenty of them, so he has no need to wind me up and embarrass me by eating the ones that have gone wrong. He know it is a pet hate of mine.

so he strops off to work having called me a "control freak" in front of our children who were sitting having their breakfast. I am Not Happy.

I thought it was quite sweet. An old-fashioned shaggy dog story about tantrums over substandard cakes.

I'm a bit disturbed by the mutterings on here about all threads needing to be 'true', or otherwise falling into the Trolling category. Confused Jokes are mostly Not True Stories.

In what way is saying I don't really like these kind of threads being a killjoy?

I didn't report it. I didn't complain about it.
I joined in the subsequent discussion explaining why I thought it was funny but don't like these threads as a rule.

I know amillionyears is enjoying trying to put everyone into one camp or another but is it not possible for me to add my opinion in a perfectly polite way without you sneering about killjoys?

That is very naughty MNHQ
You have changed your wording on your own guidelines since yesterday. And also havent said it here.

It is also entirly possible to read an op - and think - do i want to go into a man eating burnt cakes - this may not be true - and if it isnt it will upset me - so i will back off and leave those who do enjoy it - to it.

and not be a kill joy.

What people have to remember is this.

MNHQ aren't psychic and while they can tell who is banned and who is posting under what name...they can't always know whether a name changer is posting about a genuine problem or not.

So if I changed my name and told everyone I had half a pound of potatoes stuck up my arse, who are they to say I'm lying? All they can say is I'm a genuine poster.

However, if I said I had half a pound of potatoes stuck up my arse and I'm a Hungarian Yak herder called Tarquin...they'd know instantly it was a wind up hopefully Grin

Now, can anyone link me to a decent potato peeler?

but boomer this wasnt a thread where people were giving the OP advice. It was all a bit lighthearted from the start. If you dont like want to post on these sorts of threads then dont?

It's been a hilarious thread and so well done. "Alfrex" is pure genius!

I do, however, agree with this:
This one was really well done, Greenie had some genius lines, but they just add to my growing sense that nothing on here can be taken at face value.

Perhaps this is no bad thing but sadly, there are occasions when the improbable may be real and it's a shame to see an increasing number of threads which mainly consist of disbelief. But I'd hate to see all the fun drained out of MN for all that.

Elizaregina

It is entirely possible to have found the thread funny and still not want jokey troll threads.
And it is probably possible to have not found it funny without having a bruised ego.

Dismissing everyone who had a problem with it as unable to take a joke is pretty smug.

I do actually have a crap oven though Clever - v.basic gas one with dodgy settings. So it's less cake mix to burn/give DH /feed the birds waste if it is condemned not up to scratch Wink
I was confused over the flour though - basic sponge is equal quantities usually?

I can only say that everyone moaning about this thread - not being real - etc I guess none of you get entertainment from books that arnt based on true stories you dont watch any comedy programs not based on fact - nothing like that, you dont laugh at any jokes at all in RL that you do not alread first know are rooted in fact?

amillionyears I do see your point, but I think a lot depends for me on where you post and what you post about.

Posting a fake post in relationship, or mental health, or conception - not on.
Posting a fake post saying you are in serious need, trouble or distress when you're not - not on.
Posting a fake thread about a serious issue that others are likely to have been affected by for real - not on.

But posting a thread about cake, in AIBU - I can't get myself too troubled about that, tbh.

Do you post mainly in areas where people have real big stuff going on? Genuine question, I've not searched your history. But if you were to spend most of your time in mental health, or special needs, or relationships, where people are either vulnerable or going through tough stuff, then I can see that you would feel more vulnerable / taken in / angry / after soemthing like this.

Me, I mostly pop onto chat or AIBU when I have a spare 10 minutes to read something to make me chuckle. So in that context, this isn't such a big deal to me. Maybe that's why more people aren't agreeing with you.

Greenie,
Fwiw can I just confirm that I for one am not the slightest bit upset/annoyed.

I was just explained why I don't really like jokey troll threads anymore - nothing against your thread in particular.

Amillionyears . Can you stop counting anyone you think agrees with you and assigning numbers. It's really crass.

I wasn't sure at all, as usually wind ups are not so bloody clever.Grin
Greensleeves never tripped up once in her story, or drip fed or was inconsistent.
It was just perfectly executed.
I also loved the geography teacher and no birds bits, nice one Greensleeves, though I do wish it had been real and there was really a such a loon out there.

I wonder how much of this is punctured ego?

Maybe people did realise it was a bit of fun - and just went along with it becasuse it was amusing and funny? Does it really really matter?

are threads like these all about - is it - isnt it real or someting funny that brings out funny responses?

even in RL you have no way of knowing who is genuine or what they say is 100% accurate and true.

Does laughter in itself not have any place in being taken seriously? Ie for alot of illnesses physical and mental - laughing has been proved to help recovery?

Lightening ones spirits with light entertainment is actually very important.

There are some amazingly witty and talented writers on here - if anything like this thread provokes them into action with something really witty - then to me - alls the better.

as someone said - yuo can only ever take anything on an annoymous forum with a pinch of salt.

Its not everyone elses problem if you choose to emotionally heavily invest in threads about cakes - and have a sense of humour failure, why read the bloody thread.

if you think its a wind up - back off and go elsewhere - why ruin everyone elses fun.

for the truelly nasty stuff - and esp on relationships which is definalty more serious - report there!

i really cant belive people are getting in tizz over burnt cake eating husbands!

"I think I'll definitely" is not really grammatically sound, is it? Blush

Report
Flossiechops · 22/01/2013 10:42

It was meant as a joke and it was meant as a wind up. The talk guidelines state that Mumsnet do not allow name changes for misleading purposes and that is what this thread was about, by Greensleeves own admission. I cannot help but think that MN are bending their own rules on this. Whether it was funny or not is irrelevant to the rules, surely?

Ocoto I think I'll definitely use the icing sugar. Half the ingredients you say? But that means you'll end up with less cake! Shock

Boomerwang · 22/01/2013 10:39

I'm not bothered that it was a wind up (bit bothered that garlic arse was though, I thought that was hilarious but only because I thought it was real) but I do agree that it's getting more difficult to sort the real from the imagined. Real life can easily be unbelievable.

There's an atmosphere of suspicion lately. I was accused of being a troll because I recovered quickly from giving birth! How unbelievable is that, really?

It's making me want to assume everything is bollocks, and if that was the case, then I feel there's no point in posting just to find it was all a joke.

Not that I'm actually upset by it or anything, just a bit 'meh'

Thoroughly good read and cheered me up no end! Should definately go into classics because I would love to read it again some time.

Shame some are putting a downer on it but I guess they might just be embarrassed that they didn't get it.
