To wonder what the fuss is about with hotel chocolat?

I've been given a large box, obviously this is a rather fantastic present from a work colleague and very fancy/ pretty. I can't help thinking though secretly that the taste isn't all that. Am I the only one? Or am I uncultured and used to discount Thorntons as the ultimate treat?

Hotel Chocolat are simply gorgeous - I got a huge box of their Christmas chocolates for my birthday this week. If I didn't feel so unwell I'd be savouring one or two tonight. Love their champagne truffles!

The gemstone drops are divine. But I normally only like Cadburys Dairy Milk, which technically isn't chocolate, so I'm hardly a connoisseur. Grin

YANBU. I think Hotel Chocolat is waxy and tasteless. Another vote for Lidl's chocolate here.

I think it's pretty good. Definitely waaaay better than thorntons. Not the best and not as good as stuff widely available in Belgium but good cocoa content and lovely rich flavours.

The thing is to watch how it's carved. Sometimes a different blade can make such a difference. And always let it rest.

I was on the Hotel Chocolat website today wondering whether to get OH some, are they worth it. I had some Leonides a while ago and they were lovely how do HC compare ?

Thorntons is okay ... but tend to be quite sickly, with unimaginative flavours and a big emphasis on "praline" type chocs (boring). Hotel Chocolat do quite a few fruity chocs which are my favourites and really do taste fruity - as opposed to very sweet strawberry or orange creams. Had a big box of their fruit selection this week for my birthday and ate them all in 2 days

I loved the little box of Hotel Chocolat that my mum bought me a while back - by far the nicest I've ever been given, although it's not something I'd buy for myself at the price. My palate isn't the most sophisticated, mind - I was perfectly happy with the little bag of Thornton's I bought from the petrol station last week Grin.

I've just remembered I've got 2 HC Eton Mess chocolates upstairs, I'm going to have them now.

Thorntons might as well be Dairy Milk. Ok but not special. You can feel the greasy coating in your mouth after one or two.

HC is better. Lower sugar content, higher cocoa content.

When I am doing a mail order I go to Charbonnel et Walker for champagne truffles. I used to work for them and have a slight addiction now.

Advertising 2 fold??

I nearly bought some to try last week but the pushy assistant put me off so I walked out.

I wasn't impressed with them tbh. Real Belgian chocolate is the best. I'm happy with a large wholenut though so not the best person to ask!

Monks Bar chocolatiers in York are my favourite. They sell online now too. I always treat myself to a selection at Christmas, and throw in some cute chocolate animal shapes and letters for the dc. Gorgeous they are.

I'm not the biggest fan of HC, but do like a box of Thornton's continental for sentimental reasons, my Grandma used to love them and always saved me a Diplomat in the shiny gold wrapper. :)

I think Thorntons have gone downhill over the past 10 yrs. Never tried HC but not tempted!

I love German chocolates. Even their supermarket chocolates have a higher, better grade of cocoa than the expensive brands here. Aldi has very decent chocolate, even the basic bars there have high cocoa content.

I have some Hotel Chocolat 70% I picked up on a recent trip to London. It's very nice. However, an equivalent product in Germany would be much much cheaper.

(and possibly other countries- I can only testify to the amazing quality of German chocolates. Grin And no, I'm not from there! DH is!)

GreenEggsUndNichts I also love German chocolates, especially what is called "nougat" which is praline. In fact, its really the praline I like more than the chocolate!

I have never bought any but I often pop in when passing because they offer around free samples to taste.

It's a toss-up between these and this. I usually get both.
