This is a question for any of you who used to be disorganised/flaky and are now organised and sorted. I have been like this for so long and I drive myself and everyone around me crackers. I'm unbelievably forgetful, I am late a lot and I'm rubbish with finances. I'm so fed up of cringing because I'm so bloody rubbish and make stupid mistakes all the time! Sad

I've got an 8mth DS and a 10yo DD and while I've always had disorganised tendencies, since I had DS, it's gone from bad to ridiculous and I feel like I am constantly trying to catch up with myself.

I'm self employed (which is for the best as even I'd have sacked me by now) and have somehow managed to run my businesses haphazardly over the last ten years without fucking up too massively. Well, not often anyway... Blush

Well, no more, I've had enough. I am using the New Year to kick me up the arse and I need your help.

If you used to be crap and are now brilliant and incredibly organised, please, please tell me how you did it. What changed in your mind and where the hell did you start?

I'm totally organised at work but not, it appears at home or college. Will look at this thread when I have more time tomorrow.

To be honest, I think I'd rather dh didn't help. He does his bit, but there's certain things that I need to do myself to make sure 1. That they are done, 2.That they are done properly!
If I'm going to get organised I will do it better without him!

This is just me mind! Can't speak for everyone! Grin

Use the calendar on your phone if you have one. You always have it on you.

As ever, this is making me want to buy things...I already have the organized mum kitchen calendar and could not be without it. Didn't get on so well with their little life book but found the big life book was too big to carry around.

Does anyone have any must have recommendations for good diaries or notebooks or box files etc? I know half my systems break down because I don't have the right storage etc!

Loving this thread in particular advice from HelenaGrace and LeQueen.

Am quite good at being organised at home (everything has a place, declutter a lot and am good at making sure that the number of belongings in my home do not grow too many for the space I have).

However my New Years resolution is to have a better admin system (have traditionally kept too much paper and get caught up in my too elaborate filing system and then let things build up too much) and I really need to sort my diary out.

DD has recently started school and this has coincided with my having more in my life (SAHM) and my old diary system is letting me down. I have an iPhone which I find great for putting appointments in 'on the go'. A paper diary wouldn't work as well for me as I'm out and about a lot and like to travel light. But I can't visualise the week/month ahead with my iPhone so it does nothing for my planning. What do others do?

I'm considering a kitchen calendar/planner (but open plan kitchen/dinner/living room so no ideal place to put it - most of kitchen walls are knocked through). I do synch with my laptop but cannot be relied upon to look at laptop diary regulary - perhaps I should print it once a week and update daily?

Any ideas???

My DH is already organised (a librarian, I'm seeing a theme there.. Grin) and despairs of me sometimes...

Though since being inspired by some of the advice on here (I am in awe of you all, I have to say) today I have set loads of reminders for myself on my phone, cleared the bathroom drawers, put away Xmas presents Blush, cleared my dressing table, put away Xmas tree and decs, got DD to tidy her room, got DH to reinstall windows on my laptop, sorted my jewellery, done a meal planner and wrote several lists!

That looks like loads written down! Grin I feel so much better and will keep referring to this thread to keep me inspired.

I have to say this thread is BRILLIANT! I really, really need to get a filing system in order for paperwork - I tend to shove bank statements, utility statements etc into piles (usually on the shelf under the coffee table), then when the piles get too big I put them into plastic bags and hide in the spare room. I consequently have numerous a few plastic bags full of statements etc going back years in my spare room that need sorting out Blush. I like the idea of a ring binder for each year that someone above mentioned, so think I might do that.

It's weird because at work I'm very organised, with daily lists, folders for every job I have ongoing, reminders set up on outlook etc. It's just at home that I fall down.

I'm crap at keeping on top of housework too. I'm the world's worst procrastinator and if I can put off hoovering or dusting until tomorrow, then I will. I need to get some sort of schedule sorted out I think. But think I'll put it off until tomorrow Grin.

SoftKitty, i have a filling cabinet in the study but i also have 2 of those portable filling folders/cases that expand, one in the kitchen one upstairs. I love them.
You don't need money or space for those.

I use pocket informant on my iPhone. It isn't cheap (about £10) but it's the best I've found. It allows me to keep multiple task lists going (I run three companies, am a school governor and a volunteer mediator). I use a paper diary for appointments as I found it difficult to update my phone diary while using the phone to talk to a client. Hopefully this will be solved when I buy an iPad. Then I can go fully electronic.

With regard to getting the family involved I have printed laminated lists of what needs to happen in the morning and evening and the children (who are 5 & 10) each have their own laminated lists of what they have to do each evening - right down to putting shoes by the door and putting their snack in their bag. They live on the fridge. The children are responsible for their own lists and DH and I work through the other ones, crossing things off as we go. The lists for the children save lots of rows as they know what they have to do and they know there's no tv or playing until it's done.

DH and I have areas of responsibility. These were decided after I did a Garner and a Belbin analysis on both of us. I'm the ideas person and I make quick decisions so I do filing, purchasing stuff for the house and shopping. He is methodical so he pays bills, deals with banks, mortgages etc, puts washing away and changes beds.

DH and I have a meeting each Sunday night (usually with a bottle of wine) where we discuss what's going on for the next 4-6 weeks and identify any clashes. He books his days on site with clients after that and I book mine so they don't clash with him being away. We also book in a date night and book the babysitting we need.

We have an organised mum magnetic planner on the fridge which holds the detailed info for the week. This is based on the family calendar but has more info about who is doing drop offs & pickups, who is cooking and what, extra kits required for school etc.

One thing I do do is i've synced my gmail account to my android phone and it all auto reminds me to do stuff. So i've spent tonight making daily entries of little tasks like "hoovering" (Tuesday after work) "change bed sheets" (Wednesdays) Bathroom (Thursdays) and have informed the kids they're to have a shower once they're in from school whilst dinner is being cooked so that we can all eat dinner together and then relax. Thats the plan.

Plan is also to use left overs for the following days lunches.

Wish me luck, I fear I possibly need lots of it.

Oh and I've got the kids earning treats for a tidy room, rooms are checked on a monday and they are nearly always done. Sliding scale of rewards; top marks for if I can get in with the hoover and change the beds, half marks if i can get in there and make the beds, epic fail if it's a no go zone.

I have tonight put away 2 large storage boxes of my own clothes which have sat being used as drawers for the past X amount of months. Took me ten mns :)

Have started a diary on my iPad and a let of jobs and have broken cleaning kitchen cupboards into each cupboard.

What is the best iPad meal planner app?

Report
FairyTea · 02/01/2012 22:24

HelenaGrace. I've had a look at pocket informant and it looks good. I do have another iPad ToDo app which syncs with my phone and is good but pocket informant looks like it could help me with some other issues. Do you use it to sync your diary also?? It's the diary co-ordination which I'm struggling with. I've always used outlook (creature of habit) but since I don't have a desk job anymore - it's not working as well for me.

I'm wondering if I need something like your magnetic planner. Do you sit down with it and your electronic diary/paper diary once a week or something. I have an iPad so by your reckoning that should do away with need for paper diary. My problem is its not synced with outlook (whereas my phone is). I think I need to get to grips with iCloud - for some reason I have a block about it (usual story, didn't follow the link to set it up when it first arrived and now it seems like a big job).

Well have made some good progress with paper work tonight.

Thanks for all the helpful info.

Hmm personally I feel like there is no substitute for paper diaries - mine is A4 academic year week-at-a-glance which is necessary because as a lecturer I work in weekly chunks.

Went through today and diarised every seminar and lecture I have to give till April, also what preparation will need doing when and when I have marking bottlenecks and need to block off the weekends to work. I have a colleague who planned her spring term last August.

Now I am going to go back through and pencil in all my gym sessions till March Grin on nights when it looks like I won't be frantic. (DP thinks I am nuts.)

I think the things that count the most are those we put off the longest to do....

I've been decluttering quite literally for years and I'm really nearly done - except the paperwork, which I'm dreading.Yet it's doing that which I know will give me the biggest sense of calm and order.

I shall tackle it the same as I have the rest.In small chunks as and when I have time, and refuse to be beaten.

I think it's only when everything is in order that I will truly be able to be completely organised. But gradually chunks of order fall into place and soon I hope I will have completed my "mission" and be able to relax!

Lists!! Make lists for everything. Write everything down in your diary. Set your phone alarm so you're not late for things.

Get everythig ready for the next day the night before, and each night check on your diary what you and the kids are doing the next day so you have all their pe kit/homework/your work stuff etc all ready.

Sioga I use a paper diary still as I found that clients would call and I'd be fiddling about with speaker calls so I could look at my phone diary or always calling them back. The intention is to sync it with my iPad when I get it so my diary work will be done on the iPad. I use erasable pens so I don't cross things out. Oh and they're purple so any child with a purple pen has been thieving from my desk Grin.

Every Sunday night I sit down with the family calendar and my diary and write the magnetic planner. DH puts the children to bed while I do it. I shout upstairs about kits that are needed and he packs them. I enter our appointments, meals, who is cooking, doing school runs, guides run, rugby run, etc (there are five columns on mine). Then DH comes downstairs and we go through the next four to six weeks looking for clashes, days when he needs to work at home (currently his main client is 250 miles away and he does two days a week on site with them), appointments, events, school dates etc and plan those in. I write notes in my diary and we have our phones to hand so we can text babysitters, book taxis etc. It takes about two hours which sounds like a huge investment of time but it makes the rest of the week run like clockwork.

When I get my iPad I plan to use it as the family calendar as well. I have a large recipe stand on the island unit so I hope it will sit on that and everyone can update it with their stuff. I guess this will work until my five year old discovers angry birds!

Sioga, you need a desk somewhere. Or use your fridge door and extra-strong magnets for at least an industrial size calendar. You could also hang a big calendar on a door.

Marking my place too...this is my year to become the tidy thin person I've always wanted to be. I can feel it! :)

I do have ADD (at least, I have been diagnosed with it but don't take medication) and things are hard for me, but I think with routines, focus, and just plain getting rid of shit I can do it!

I just cannot do the things suggested here for organisation :( I have tried most of them at one time or another - I am rubbish at it. I am the parent who forgets to send the kid in with a school bag, loses and pays for the lost library book even though I know they are just in the bedroom somewhere, runs out of something like clean undies for one child because the washloads got wonky and all of the pants were in the wrong heap, panics if there is a tummy bug in the family because we don't ever have much spare clean bedding, forgets 'early release day' EVERY BLOODY TIME (one day a month they are sent home at lunchtime here). Sends kids in on no school days, and forgets the first day of term. My kid got put on the school tv channel a few weeks ago because she was in class early and had her homework - presumably she made the school news channel by virtue of it being a first.

I am Havoc and Mayhem and my life and home is chaos. :( I go between excessive laziness and random busts of furious cleaning. We never have house guests as I never feel it is clean enough. If a tornado blew my walls down people would assume our home had been trashed by wind rather than the truth - we live in the maelstrom.

Maybe 2012 will be better. Maybe.
