AIBU?

to put my make up on on the tube?!

I would rather have 5 minutes extra in bed than almost anything - if I could shower on the way to work I would do. I almost always leave the house make up free and put it all on while I'm on the way to work.

My friend stayed over the other night and travelled in with me - she was totally unimpressed with this and thought it was really weird. I do sometimes get some odd looks from commuters too. I don't see the problem. Anyone else?

Although I did see the error of my ways this morning when I bumped into my neighbour on the bus and had to chat away with him while trying to avoid looking at him. Difficult. So AIBU and a lazy slattern? Or is there no problem with this?

Eyes and lips are fine, moisturiser/foundation/powder NOT!

It is a good skill to have though, I used to do it when I lived in London! I can put my makeup on anywhere :o I can also "mascara and eyeliner" without a mirror in an emergency.

You have to hold yourself so that everything goes with the movement of the tube, and remember to do the less crucial detail as you go over the very ricketty rails :D

Wierdly I think that doing a full face is a bit grim, but have nonproblem with a bit of lipstick or lipsalve. Wonder why that is different?

I can't understnad why anyone would want to put their make up on with dirty hands from being on the tube. / bus.

Someone on my commute does everything from moisturiser, foundation and then the rest. Just think of the bacteria she's rubbing all over her face.

On a bus, at the back, with no one sat next to me, maybe, but only a bit of blusher. Not on the tube, however, way too exposed. Tube passengers have nothing to look at if they don't have a book / newspaper so I would feel uncomfortable being the 'entertainment'.

As for people stating that women applying makeup on the tube is their 'pet hate' jeez, lighten up ! Must be exhausting getting uptight about everything Hmm

Wouldn't bother me but I personally wouldn't do it.

Yes, when I lived in London.

Hazel - "I like make up and I like sleep"...pretty much sums it up for me! And I am now inspired by you brave eyelash curlers - I was traumatised by an incident very like the one you describe Hazel but that was in the safety of my own home Smile

applying make up on public transport is slovenly and slack
and inevitably the make up applied is always dog brand with no discernible difference in how the lazy commuter looks

When I lived in Paris I thought it was so pretentious the way women wore sunglasses on the metro. Then, one day, I was running late. Base on, no time for eyeliner or mascara. Now I understand why they all wear sunglasses - they haven't finished their make up either!

I wouldn't go from start to finish on the tube, but only because I don't want to leave the house completely plain faced. I regularly do eye make up en route

It annoys me when I am wearing my lovely camel coat because I think the person putting make up on is going to get make up on it. It often ends being balanced precariously and of course the tube is bumpy.

I find it grim when people grab the nasty germy poles and then stick them in a make up pot (lip balm is the worst). Bleugh.

euro I was in a cream dress on a packed tube the other day and a man was squashed up next to me with an OPEN CAN OF COKE. It was the most stressful ten minutes I have ever had on the tube. Luckily his can remained at its dangerous angle (he didn't even drink it, just carried it) and my dress remained unblemished. Lesson learned though.

OP, YANBU. I do my make up on the train every single day. I have to leave the house at 7.30am to get to work before 9am, and before leaving the house I already have to get up, have a bath, do my hair and get DS1 and 2 up as well. I refuse to get up earlier to do my makeup as well :)

I don't wear foundation - makeup consists of eyebrow pencil, eyeliner, mascara and lipgloss. In 10 or so years I can honestly say I've never got my makeup on anyone else. I have however had coffee or other drinks spilt on me, and crumbs from people's food Hmm

I travel by bus, one lady always has wet hair, it is twisted and pinned during the journey. There are two ladies (in their late 40s) who sit together on the 6am bus who share make up. Even eye make up. Both apply full makeup. There are a lot of potholes here but they never smudge or spill.

Is it acceptable to apply balm/gloss? I sit in the little seat at the front, so technically the only person to see me do so would be the driver.

I used to sit further back but got sick of people sneezing/coughing on my hair.

As someone from the sticks who's only been on the tube a handful of times, people in London haven't got a second to live are getting on with their lives to such an extent, I doubt anyone would even notice. And as a man, there's something good about seeing a woman apply make-up. I used to see a gorgeous woman do it in the library without a care in the world and it was distracting in a nice way!

I always used to do mine on the Tube, too. I was rarely the only woman doing so. There often used to be outraged letters about it in the Standard, from chaps fulminating about the indelicacy of modern women Hmm

One nice older gentleman observed the whole process very benignly, then thanked me! He said he'd never seen a "lady" applying her makeup before; his wife always did it in the bathroom with the door locked. I think that's taking mystique a little too far - but then, I once knew a woman who reapplied her makeup before bed - husband had NEVER seen her without it!

scottishmummy, I'll have you know mine was Chanel! No idea whether it made me look any different; I only wear the stuff when required to conform.

I'm really not sure what kind of makeup you wear, but I think I admire how steady your hand is.

Say you wear liquid liner, please!

garlic nutty "I always used to do mine on the Tube, too. I was rarely the only woman doing so. There often used to be outraged letters about it in the Standard, from chaps fulminating about the indelicacy of modern women hmm"

I think the letter writers got it on the head. This is about the drop in standards isn't it. The last generation had manners but we seem to have lost the niceties of caring about other people - which is what manners is all about. Women sticking up their fingers to what the majority of people travelling on PUBLIC transport find acceptable.

It's common, it's unattractive, it shows a lack of class and style and I wonder what's going to happen next behaviour wise.

NotADudeExactly · 23/09/2011 08:17

Yeah, I often wonder about that too!

I mean, make-up on public transport, seriously? Outrage and abomination!

Next thing they'll deny the headship of the husband and as we all know that inevitably leads to people starting to think that homosexuality might be acceptable.

We're doomed, I'm telling you! Doomed!

Get down on your knees and ask the lord Jesus Christ to rapture us before it all happens!

Blimey, I used to leave the house at c. 0630 am to walk to the ferry, ferry to bus, bus to train, walk from train to office and I could still squeeze 3 mins in to do make up before leaving, what awful commutes do all you others have then? I thought mine was bad!

I did do my make up on the ferry once. But in my defence the alarm hadn't gone off and it is ridiculously quiet at that time in the morning. And the seating means that you can't really see others unless you are sat next to them.
