Another thing or another think?

MaryPoppinUnannounced · 03/09/2020 16:04

So quick question is it

‘You’ve got another thing coming’ or
‘You’ve got another think coming’??

Worried I have been saying it wrong all these years Blush

@MrsTerryPratchett

I say thing. I know it's think.

Me too

@MrsTerryPratchett I’ll join you on that hill, that’s one worth dying on 🙌🏼

Ha ha, this again.Grin

It’s a joke phrase - Oh you “think” that do you? Well, you’ve got another “think” coming my friend.

It’s not supposed to be grammatically correct, it’s a joke sentence emphasising that a person is mistaken.

So. If you still think it’s thing, you’ve got another think coming.Grin

@ShirleyPhallus

It’s think, but you’d sound like a knob in real life saying it I reckon.

Just like Moet should be pronounced with a hard T sound at the end but you’d sound a pretentious idiot doing so

It think, it’s if you think something it’s wrong and you better chance and have another think. Thing makes no sense at all! What thing is coming?

Think

Bit scary that so many people on here believe that "thing" is correct.

You can't have a 'think'

No, clearly not.

Report
CharityDingle · 03/09/2020 18:07

Think as in 'think again about that'. Hence, another think.

For those people who are claiming thing, please explain how on Earth it fits into the full saying?
It doesn't

If you think X you've got another thing coming

Makes no sense at all

If you think X you've got another think coming

Essentially means you need to think again - makes perfect sense

@ChateauMargaux

Think is a verb, thing is a noun. The sentence in question requires a noun, therefore a thing or a thought.. not a think!! You are all wrong!!

So what if I want to say "let me have a think about it"? Think is a noun in that sentence? Surely you can think and you can have a think? It's a noun and a verb?

I know it's think as that makes sense but I probably mostly say thing

Report
Spidey66 · 03/09/2020 16:46

It's think as in

'If you think it's A, you've got another think coming' . Thing wouldn't make sense.

But if it's ''you're x, y, and z, and another thing, you're b as well' then it's thing.

CatRamsey · 03/09/2020 16:44

You can't have a 'think'. But you can have a thing.

You can have a thought, so surely it would be 'you have another thought coming?' Another think just doesn't make sense to me.

DowntonCrabby · 03/09/2020 16:43

It’s definitely think but the stand alone phrase of “and another thing” is possibly confusing.

Report
CatRamsey · 03/09/2020 16:41

Surely another thing makes more sense? What is another think??

Report
Tothecuntry · 03/09/2020 16:40

Definitely 100% think.

I believe it's think, as in you're going to have to reconsider that.
