Is it because if a witch gets a part of your body the witch can curse you, and the tooth fairy's job is to keep you safe from that?

It was a doddle when DS1 was losing his first milk teeth, as DS2 was cutting his. Seeing as they share a bedroom, the tooth fairy didn't even have to leave the room to whisk the tooth from under one's pillow, and straight into the other's mouth!

Terry Pratchett covered it in Hog Father - there's an old traditional folk magic trope that having a peice of a person and making a poppet - doll- gives you control of them.

It's why DH had a contained in a draw full of teeth from tooth fairy duty because apparently he feel bad about throwing them away but can't articulate why

A fairy who found a child's tooth big enough to use as a stool would not be able to carry a pound coin comfortably.
