This has got to be one of the big human rights issues of our times-using children as canaries in the mineshaft, dispensing these drugs when we have no idea if they are safe in this context.

Thank you Posie - let's share this far and wide!

two people with zero experience of working with trans kids, claim the opposite of people who work with trans kids, amazing!

Not really amazing!
Ignorance masquerading as expertise.
Just par for the course around here.

Let’s not mention (how many?) people with zero experience of being female claiming to be female then...

This.

Brilliant Offred. Either experience of a thing is important or it isn't. Can't have it both ways.

Indeed. If you feel you have experience with children, then you have it,

Crisp - what is a trans kid? How do we know which ones will outgrow their discomfort? How do we know which ones suffer from gender dysphoria and which ones are using being transgender to cope with some other difficulty? Which ones are actually gender non-conforming but think they are trans?

If we knew which of them was likely to only be able to thrive as an adult living as the opposite sex, then I would defer to those with experience of trans kids.

The trouble is we don't. So we need to listen to people who have experience of child development; of autism; of adolescent mental health not just those who think that any child who says they are trans is trans. There are very high stakes here - unknown effects of puberty blockers; unknown long term effects of testosterone on teenage girls; poor evidence of long term efficacy of surgery and cross sex hormones on mental health.

Surely we owe it to these children to be very wary of these interventions and listen to all the arguments.

"This is an issue addressed by Dr Polly Carmichael, who runs the GIDS, in a recent talk to the Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health. In her thoughtful hour-long lecture, she said this:

“The rapid rise in the number of assigned females…. exemplifies the importance of keeping discourse open and allowing different voices to be heard.

“You might say the increase in the numbers of assigned females coming forward is [because] that it’s easier for females to talk about their gender-diverse feelings so what we are seeing is an increase in awareness getting towards a better representation of the true prevalence of this among females.

“A converse explanation, a question: are there issues for young women around how they perceive their gender? There has been a worry by some that people who would previously have had an outcome around sexuality are now having an outcome around gender.”

(In other words, these are girls who do not readily identify with the predominant idea of femininity and are sexually attracted to biological females, and who would, a decade or two ago, have grown up to consider themselves lesbians.) Dr Carmichael’s conclusion:

“The truth is we don’t know, but we need discussion in order to be thinking about what this could mean.”

By experts, do you mean Tavistock who support Stephanie?

Or do you mean experts who consider themselves the authority because they subjected their own kids to transitioning?

Excellent video - well worth listening to. Good to hear from someone with so much experience in child psychology / development.

Funny how trans organisations are so quick to use people with no experience in education, child psychology, child development, learning, emotional health and wellbeing or safeguarding to go into schools and lecture adults and children. Their only expertise is in being or knowing about trans - but apparently that's enough to coerce everyone else to abandon safeguarding practice and the law in order to implement the trans version of reality.

From The Guardian article, www.theguardian.com/education/2018/may/15/transgender-row-teachers-afraid-challenge-breast-binding#comment-115844701

"Adele Robinson (not her real name), a head of year at a secondary school, shares Davies-Arai’s worries. The school has had 12 children, all girls, come out as transgender in the past 18 months. The majority, she says, have autism, and some have experienced sexual abuse.

When they come out, she says, they have brought in information sourced from Tumblr blogs and YouTube videos. Although her team does its best to “support every child in a loving, kind and compassionate way”, she feels that staff are too frightened to challenge what she sees as harmful practices: “We have chest binders worn in school, which is horrible. If a child was cutting, they would be straight in with a counsellor. Yet damaging developing breast tissue goes unquestioned. It’s a gross failure in terms of child protection.”

I don't know why some TRA are so keen to trans children. Why they say puberty blockers and cross sex hormones are safe when they know nothing of the sort.

Women and girls have a long history of being let down by the medical profession, this is just another example. I sincerely hope that these children have someone genuinely on their side to keep them safe.

It validates them and their ideology. I am sure that there are children out there deeply unhappy, I'm not sure that drugs where the long terms impacts on children are unknown or breast binders that damage tissue are the answer.

As a previous poster says how are we to know which children will grow out of this and which won't, the truth is we don't, but by then it could be too late.

LangCleg · 24/05/2018 17:18

The more and the younger the children they can declare as trans, the more they can persuade people that such a thing as an innate gender identity exists.

Absolutely 100% couldn't agree more.
Transgender Trend does not have that experience.

Those who do have that professional training, qualifications, expertise and experience, and the professional organisations that represent them almost unanimously regard the Transgender Trend approach as "unethical".

To find Mumsnet being used to promote an unethical treatment of vulnerable kids is, frankly, disgraceful.

There are very high stakes here - unknown effects of puberty blockers; unknown long term effects of testosterone on teenage girls; poor evidence of long term efficacy of surgery and cross sex hormones on mental health.
Not quite as "unknown* as you seem to be suggesting, but the research is on-going.
The evidence of long term efficacy of surgery and cross sex hormones on mental health is well established — and it is clear that the results are better in every respect if treatment is not unduly delayed.

Surely we owe it to these children to be very wary of these interventions and listen to all the arguments.
Yes, but perhaps giving less weight to arguments from ill-informed amateurs and rather more to the professional opinions of qualified experts.
