So disappointed about Vagina Museum.

There are plans for one. But they are explicitly NOT celebrating "the female reproductive system". Guess why. HmmAngry

I went to an event promoting it tonight, and it was generally great - especially the talk on the history of the word cunt, & the charity providing sanpro for asylum seekers & refugees.

There was a lot about the importance of being able to talk about our bodies, the odd reference to "Vagina-havers" or "people with periods" but it was rare enough that I could largely ignore it.

Then at the end of the evening I realised that the museum's strapline was about "celebrating vaginas & the people who have them". The organiser then announced a future event featuring Sophie LaBelle of Assigned Male. FFS.

What finished it off for me was a look at their website, where they explain that they don't talk about female reproductive systems because that would be trans-exclusionary.

This could have been a brilliant opportunity to celebrate women as a sex & our bodies. But it's not.

Vaginas are awesome. They are attached to women.

Exactly. Just like clitorises are attached to women.

Royally pissed off.

Very disappointing.

A trans vagina is never quite going to be the same is it? They're not going to have a baby delivered through their inverted penis and it most certainly will not bounce back to its normal size. How can they have a whole museum of fanny and completely ignore the fact that a biological females vagina is no where near the same fucking thing as a trans vag.

When will this end?

When men have taken everything away from women?

When “woman” no longer means anything?

You can be a person with a vagina. You can be a woman with a vagina. You cannot be a man with a vagina.

If you are man who has had “bottom surgery” you still don’t have a vagina. You may have something that resembles one, but it is not one.

I’m scared for our future, I really am.

What's the point of it otherwise?

What does Sophie LaBelle have to contribute to a conversation about vaginas? Other than that we're privileged for having them.

Fuck knows. There was no actual reference to neovaginas during the event to be fair, but in an evening of talk about periods, pelvic floors post-birth & cunts throughout history there really wasn't a place for them.

I thought the occasional "Vagina havers" stuff was a polite nod towards transmen until they mentioned Sophie (Q&A and signing their new book on the trials of being trans, apparently) & I saw the strapline.

I now can't believe they're not going to include neovaginas in their museum. How far is it from neovaginas to lady penises?

"This vagina is an outie vagina, just like some people have outie bellybuttons. Stop snickering, you evil bigots."

Grin Thanks for making me laugh! I just couldn't believe that in the same breath as saying we should talk about our female bodies, they're saying they're not going to talk about our female bodies...

It's starting to frighten me how far this madness has gone. The TRAs seem to have their testicles tentacles everywhere.

There must be a huge amount of money backing them.

Fucking ridiculous. Though I am amused to see they are prepared for the MN Vulva Police: www.vaginamuseum.co.uk/faq

Did someone not warn them about how transphobic their planned selection of baked goods is? Apparently they intend to offer vulva cupcakes. I anticipate screaming meltdowns by the espresso machine.

Given that a trans speaker is already lined up, I wonder if a TRA-type organisation has offered funding.

There's nothing on the site about lady penises. There are the bits about trans-inclusivity & Sophie Labelle, though.

And there was so much good stuff in the event tonight. But the bit in their FAQs about the female reproductive system being trans exclusionary ruins it.

So vaginas are like Nessie, there are many rumors that they may exist but we need this museum to definitely confirm that they're out there.

Oh no!!! They accidentally included the words “gynaecological anatomy” in their nonsense. Someone should tell them that such a term is the most transphobic term imaginable. Literal violence in fact.

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 15/02/2018 00:07

They mention FGM too.

This is like WEP. Something that sounds as if it's going to be all about women, then they make it very clear that it isn't.
