full midi skirt: how to style

I saw this shop.mango.com/gb/women/skirts-midi/flared-long-skirt_67949207.html on a FB add and ended up buying it. But what do I wear it with? White or cream don't really suit me... I am 5'6 and size 12, stomach is not flat.

Black or mustard yellow would be fine. Wear with trainers or Birkenstocks for casual.

Agree with @BabyDarlingDollfaceHoney but would also try a relaxed grey T tucked in or even a leopard print top but toned down by wearing white trainers with it .

I would colour clash another bright colour like yellow magenta pink. Otherwise black. If you are wearing it high waisted the top needs to be tucked in. Flat strappy sandals similar to the model, or birkenstock arizonas or madrid, or trainers.

But, if you are really stuck for outfit ideas and have a big tummy, is that style really the one for you? You shouldn't buy something and not be able to see how it could work with your wardrobe or your body shape, or need to buy tops and shoes to make it work.

Thanks for the great ideas! Yes, this was basically an impulse buy. Not something I have done much in years but I have bought a few items in the last week or two. I think once you buy something, more and more pictures of clothes appear on FB! Still, hopefully it can work and I like the idea of another bright colour with it. Perhaps I will look for that on eBay to minimise the damage of the initial splurge! Do you think stripey/floral would work? When it arrives I will post a picture...

Skirt arrived. I like the colour and style but it is a little big, a couple of inches too big around the waist... Not sure whether this is a good thing to avoid bulges or whether it is unflattering. Here are some photos - in the third one it is pulled down around the hips and I am wearing it hipster as a full length skirt (used to do this 15 years ago!). Should I keep it or send back? There's no option to exchange for a smaller one as they seem to be sold out.

hmm those photos weren't in the order I thought but there are some different tops (which works?) and here are the others.

Definitely need to go down a size. I'd wear with a plain white tee tucked in or knotted at back

Sorry, but I think it's awful. It doesn't suit you at all. It makes you look short and fat and you're most definitely not either of those.

I'm afraid I agree it doesn't quite work, it doesn't do you any favours. In a smaller size and a little shorter it might work, I'd send it back.

I would also send it back. Have a look at Monki, OP, they do lovely midi skirts in lots of different colours and prints.i have a few and wear them with tucked in tees, sometimes a stripy top clashing with a print, and usually trainers.

Hmm yes thanks for the honest opinions! I will send it back and look for something maybe the same colour but a different style.

Its a lovely skirt but it looks too big and the extra fabric is adding bulk where there isn't any. I'm roughly the same size and shape as you. I find a gathered skirt seems to suit our shape better in a dress than in a skirt.

MoltonSilver yes I think another problem is that I have a short body above the waist and it ends up looking wider. What shape am I? I've wondered sometimes when I see these "apple, hour glass, triangle, pear" etc. Am I a rectangle? Or an apple?

I'm not sure what shape to call it. We don't fit neatly into any of the categories but that photo could be me. Apples are supposed to have a bigger bust so maybe rectangle. If you're going for a fuller skirt, this shape of dress seems to work well.

Look for a full skirt with no pleats around the tummy / or where the pleats have been sewn down across the tum / or just a couple of pleats either side of the tum.

I can’t wear skirts with any kind of full pleat or gathered waist - it just makes me look heavily pregnant or like I need a good fart :-)

I agree it does nothing for you. Ironically, upthread I said tops had to be tucked in, but actually the pic with the black vest outside looks the best. I think because it draws your waistline down to give you a longer upper body. I also think it is too long, it's almost a maxi skirt. A midi length worn on the hip would work well for you I think. If it was really cheap and you loved the colour, you could chop off some length?
