NYC any recommendations to pack or things to do in general?

For Thanksgiving I don’t want to take too much or spend loads of money before I get there. I’m guessing most nights we will go out for dinner straight from the day walking about. I’m not sure how dressy up Thanksgiving dinner is? We are going to a place in Greenwich Village then plan to find a bar in the area.

It’s very exciting even though I’ve been before. I’m guessing there really is nothing worth bringing home the way the rate is?

Thanksgiving dinner is medium dressy, but it also depends on the restaurant. There was a thread recently on things to do in NYC. I'll see if I can find the link.

People in NY are not as into fashion as the UK, so anything goes for Thanksgiving. I think the only things worth buying here now are crest white strips and melatonin. Anyway, who wants to waste time shopping when there are bars, restaurants, rooftops, galleries etc.

I would agree that anything goes it you're having Thanksgiving dinner at Shack Shack. If you're dining at Union Square Cafe you'll want to look a little nicer.

corneliastreetcafe.com we’ve booked there for no particular reason other than the area we thought we could go for a walk before hand and drink after. However if you recommend somewhere else I would change it. We are staying off Canal Street.

No shopping on Black Friday? What about Kate Spade?

Cornelia Street Cafe is pretty cool and laid back it will be fun. Cafe Wah is fun and has a great house band which is close by. Artichoke pizza on McDougal Street is cheap and amazing for a quick lunch.

Yes I’ve tried their pizza and the one on the corner. After that we went to Maria’s Crisis. You are so lucky to live there.

I've never been to the Cornelia Street Care, but the menu looks great. I'd give it a go.

No, Black Friday is really just the start. I would certainly check out one of the Kate Spade shops that morning.

Expect it to be significantly colder than you think! We went in November and it was minus 10 not counting the wind chill. Everyone was wearing balaclavas!

Some places will start their sales early online, as well - you can probably get things delivered to your hotel if you want to avoid shopping in person

I think this is probably a bit of an exaggeration. -10 C would be 14 F. That was the NYC record low for the month of November set in 1955:

As you'll see at the link above, the average high temperature for NYC in November is 52 F (11.1 C). Nights will be chilly, but not arctic by any means.

Black Friday is just the start to the whole cycle of discounting for Xmas. The department stores can be a bit busy but the nicer shops should be fine.

Please let me know how else I can help. As you'll see on the other thread, I seem to be becoming the NYC ambassador to MN.

Okay it was probably a massive exaggeration! It was stonkingly cold though. It was before the days of t'internet and we had pitched up in clothes suitable for a mild London November; a hoody with a raincoat over the top. We had to panic buy fleeces, gloves and hats at a street stall on Wall Street. The Staten Island Ferry was a lesson in resilience! The only photos we have are me and my friend with scarves wrapped round our heads!

We were in our early twenties and we were vaguely on the pull in NY that time. I remember saying its was pointless because you could barely make eye contact with people in the street due to the balaclavas and people hunched over against the wind and sleet!

Comfortable flats for eating out, joggers for walking around and sightseeing. They'll go fine with a nice pair of blue jeans.

Well come on then, start planning your holiday in NYC! If you can't come for Xmas, come in the spring. NY is gorgeous in May and June.

I've been mid January. Never known cold like it - if you left an inch of skin exposed, it froze. That was daytime, most evenings we couldn't face going out (and I was still young at the time). But beautiful too: clear, sunny days, great views, didn't queue for anything. The snow was magical too and, unlike the UK, everything kept going - until we got to the airport!

There's a lot they didn't show in Sex and the City! The blood flat those women had was HUGE by NYC standards.

Because we're used to hard winters and equipped to deal with heavy snowfalls NYC doesn't slow down much in the winter. Most people get around on the underground anyway.
