For ages now I have wanted to cut my hair short but have just never had the courage to do it, always worrying if my partner would like it, would family and friends, well I have realised it is my hair and I want it cut short. All I ever do with it is pull it back in a band at my nape, I wear it loose so rarely nowadays. I feel that a simple stylish short off the ear look would be so much better for me, I will feel fresher and it will stop me moaning 24/7 about my blooming hair.

I know it is more maintenance but I feel I am ready for a new look after all these years. I have a dear friend who has a lovely short pixie cut whose hair always looks stylish and well groomed, it is a look I long for. I have booked an appointment with her hairdresser for first thing Monday morning before work to have the chop. She has asked me to bring in some styles that I like but I haven't a clue what will suit me so any advice or style pics would be appreciated. I want something low maintenance that I can wash daily when I shower and quickly blow dry, I would like a fringe above my eye brows as my hair grows so quickly as once it is styled short I wont be able to just snip off some fringe myself as I do now.

Any advice would be welcome, thanks everyone, I am so excited and I cant wait for the new me

You have gorgeous hair.

If it were me, I'd go for a shoulder-grazing bob to start with. Maybe slightly graduated so it's longer at the front and slightly shorter at the back. If you like it shorter, I'd take it higher next time.

I think pixie crops can be either enchanting or ageing depending on the wearer. It can take some people into older-lady territory before their time, as longer hair is associated with youth, generally speaking. So I'd have a bob, then a shorter bob an then decide whether to go for a short-short cut after that.

I second the advice of going to maybe something shoulder length first. It just seems too drastic to me to go from long to very short overnight although I admit I am not very brave in the hair dept

You have lovely thick hair Envy
A graduated bob would look lovely, longer at the front shorter at the back.

You have a lovely face, if you feel ready for a drastic change, then go ahead.
I think a chin length Bob, shorter at the back, with your fringe, swept over to one side, would look nice.
Maybe consider some highlights too !
Do come back and show us the new you. 😄

I would second what @Sugarpiehoneyeye suggested. I chopped all mine up during the summer and I have never had so many compliments about my hair. I have thin hair so nothing like yours which looks fabulous. My last cut was a tad too short so just want my hair to grow about an inch longer and I will be happier.

I think the graduated bob is more ageing than a stylish pixie cut. You have a good frame for a pixie cut, slim shoulders, long neck and excellent jaw line.

You are doing the right thing by picking the hairdresser of someone with hair that you admire. Also you will have to have regular trims so the length of your fringe won't necessarily need to be short. Have a look at Michelle Williams hair as she's had numerous versions of pixie cuts with various lengths. I like Anne Hathaway's pixie cut too, especially picture 2.

Anne Hathaway is your friend here. Google her name plus short hair and hundreds of fab images will appear. Good luck. I love short hair too :)

Hi everyone, thanks for your ideas.
EraArils, I love Anne Hathaways hair and I do agree that style 2 is lovely, that is a style I will print and take to the salon with me, I just need a few more.

I went from bra strap length to Robin Wright. Best style decision I ever made. It's much easier to manage and looks much fresher. Hairdresser was afraid I'd cry tried to talk me into the graduated bob style as a stepping stone but I find them pretty uninspiring so went for the whole hog. Happy chopping!

You have gorgeous hair! I really wish mine was like that (well it was several years ago before I kept chopping at it!) yes, I'm desperately trying to grow it back but its painstakingly taking ages!

However, i get it that you want a change, I was the same, hence why I chopped mine! I went for a lob, something like this & I loved it, kept the length like this for a while until I realised it really wasn't doing me any favours & I did indeed suit my hair longer.

You could have the fringe incorporated into it as well, a light feathered fringe rather than a full blunt one.

I have also had my hair cut very short many many years ago, from my experience I found it harder to style than long hair!

Whatever you decide, enjoy your new style!

I went for a long textured asymetrical pixie with a side fringe last week from long hair with a blunt fringe. Similar to east's pic only a touch longer. I love it and have had loads of compliments. It is slightly more of a hassle than bunging it up in a ponytail when you cba. Plus I needed to spend on products I didn't before, felt slightly overwhelmed with what to choose. Glad I took the plunge as I've been contemplating it for a while.

I would be quite careful if I were you, as your hair looks quite wavey/curly, which will only increase if you have it cut very short.

Pixie cuts tend to best suit those with straight hair-mine is more like yours and when I tried it I looked more like princess Di than Anne Hathaway TBH! Not a good look-I grew it out as quickly as possible and would never venture again!

You have fab, thick hair which looks “heavy” (in a good way) and would suite these...

Looks like your hair is thick and wavy. Go shaggy..as a rule, when in doubt go longer. You can always cut more off very easily

Shaggy concave bob with fringe
Try this as a search for images

I wouldn’t suggest something without a fringe - as you have one
I would suggest a style you can recreate easily at home with the hair you have
I wouldn’t suggest extreme pixie cut from very long - I think it will freak you out and you’ll be unsure
Therefore pick something you can handle at home and that isn’t from one extreme to the other
You can always go back in 6 months and go shorter but it’ll take a lot longer to grow it

Mine was your length for 37 and 3 months ago I chopped it into a bob short at back and long around chin and it was the best thing I have even done wish I done it years ago

I love Robin Wright's cut and colour, want it for myself, but my mum has a cropped cut and people already say we look so alike, that I'm keeping mine shoulder length!

Oh please don't do it in increments, just go for it! You'll feel tons lighter and have a real Wow! moment. Enjoy!

I agree with just going for it, also Don't worry about yours being wavy when long-I used to straighten my long hair daily but have never had to straighten since having it pixie - chopped about 15 Yrs ago. Be prepared to maintain it though, I am at the hairdressers every 4 weeks, mine grows super quickly so could even make that every 3. Great idea to go to the same person who does your friend's.Thinking about it, people regularly ask who cuts mine and I tell them - nice compliment.

This is an issue many of us face, at least your partner does not seem to be against you cutting it. My hair was similar to yours and I also eventually cut it short, that was about 6 years ago now and quite frankly it was the best thing I ever did. I just did not want long hair. I have no regrets and I will never grow it longer again. Pick a style that you love and get it cut!!
Good luck.

I think your hair is gorgeous. Sorry to go against the majority but I think shorter hair ages you instantly. I've seen so many go for the 'celeb' short choppy cut and in 'real life' I think it often looks frumpy.
I think you look gorgeous as you are!
