Any advice for an apple shape??

I am a definite apple shape and am really struggling to find anything flattering to wear, especially in this hot weather!

I am a size 16, at least a couple of stone overweight, with broad shoulders, no waist and a tummy. Lucky me. Good legs though I think. This makes me look out of proportion though, as I tend to wear skinny jeans, leggings, cropped slim trousers and I just can't get the top half right. I look too boxy.

Any suggestions for flattering tops? Or even a dress style that suits an apple?

Following with interest. Generally I find that shift dresses are best, dresses that look like a long t shirt, and I avoid anything strappy, horizontal seems at the waist, belts or these kaftans that have an elasticated seam right under the boobs. Boden Richmond shorts with a loose t shirt with sleeves are good. I would be very interested to hear suggestions from other fellow apples re summer clothes

Thanks, will have a look at those ideas. Agree about seam under boobs, I worry someone will ask if I'm expecting!

Keep upper half to plain colours and simple lines. I like loose-ish shirts. Lighter or patterned bottoms. I prefer skinny or slim jeans etc although the advice is not to do that- I think at least I'm showing off my best feature!

I agree Ear, although am starting to think it just emphasises the bad bits.

Thanks Maraki, wouldn't have considered shifts but I like that.

Afraid not Inigo. Is it a maxi? Like that idea in this hot weather.

Oh yes to next dress I got a few of these last year and am still wearing them! There are some lovely prints too, I could nearly buy it in every pattern!

That next dress is completely sold out now! I just tried all the patterns but nothing (unless size 6)

If only, I don't think I'd mind being an apple shape if I was a size 6!

I think you and I would be the same body shape OP. This week I have been wearing longer length (just above the knee) wide leg denim shorts with plain t's from H&M. Although this sounds a bit boring I've worn it with a trilby style sun hat and jewelled flip flops. I also like the Boden longer length linen shirts, I own in white so nice with lots of coloured bottoms. Agree with other posters on the plain top, busier bottoms scenario. I have nice jersey hareems from Hush.

I'm an apple shape, size 12/14 (after having just lost two stone Blush).

At the moment I'm living in denim shorts and longline plain tees. The shorts show off my legs (best part) and the longer length tops atop my top half looking like a box.

I also bought a really nice t shirt dress from BooHoo which is very flattering - not clingy but not a tent either. I find striking a balance between the two quite difficult sometimes.

I hadn't even considered shorts, it's good to get some ideas. I do have some harem trousers but again, struggle with top half. Think I need to find some longer line tops too.

Don't over think the top half. Stick to plain, put a scarf on if it's cooler or a statement necklace if need to be smarter and just choose something non clingy. These are the H&M t's that are washing well and working for me

The denim blue looks lovely with white crop jeans.

Thank you cherrypie! I popped into H&M after work and have bought that top in 4 colours. It wasn't clingy and I think it will be an easy put on with lots of different bottoms. I wouldn't even have looked at it.

I wore the burgundy one today with this skirt (but in black) and felt nice for a change. Glad I posted!

Bet you looked bloody great! Did you just have the t shirt loose over top or tucked in?

Report
redmimi · 23/06/2017 20:14

Thanks Earless! I had it loose, tucked in would look great if I can loose a stone or so, middle too thick for now!

What size for the H&M tshirt (equivalent to 14ish)? Their sizes are so random
