Warm, comfortable boots that can cope with frost and snow

I know this is a hardy perennial, but, having been in denial because I hate all cold weather and everything associated with it, can now see it's actually going to be cold this winter - at least for a bit. Plus am going to New York in December and understand that's often cold and snowy.

So I probably need to give in and get some sensible boots. Not too clumpy or hard to get on or too high up leg, please - usually wear ankle boots. But must be warm, must be comfortable enough for lots of city walking, and must have non-slippy soles - I'm always terrified I'm going to slip over on any frost/slush/snow. Not at all intrepid.

Aren't Merrell the ones people on here often recommend - if so, which style/s? Any other brands that fit the bill? Maybe Ugg - the non-'traditional' ones?

The only snow boots that are truly warm are the uggs ariondack ones. I've got three pairs now but they're pissing expensive.

bummymummy77 · 28/11/2016 17:44

The Merrill snow boots aren't great. The uggs are so warm I don't wear socks even when it's -30 below.

I love the karrimor ones that are fur lined with rubber toe but they're a bit chunky. Fantastic in rain and snow and really warm though.

I've got some fitflop boots. Sheepskin lined, waterproof, very comfortable. Very lightweight. I did have some great Hush sheepskin lined biker boots but they were so heavy I ended up with plantar fasciitis.

Im wearing these Lovelies and have been for the past 2 weeks, they make me happy, warm, comfy and calm Grin. Have the brown ones toying about the black also.

Pestilence13610 · 28/11/2016 19:55

these are so warm. Totally over the top but, so warm and comfy.

Sorel Caribou are supposed to be the dogs bo**ocks, but have always seemed OTT for Cornwall.

Couldashouldawoulda · 28/11/2016 20:03

I love my Dubarrys.

dylsmimi · 28/11/2016 20:12

Ohhh sorry about the long link! Blush

These boots are so warm and comfortable you don't want to take them off: Shepherd

The colour is a bit darker than it appears in that photo - this pic is more representative.

GloriaGaynor · 28/11/2016 20:17

Shepherd is a Swedish brand of sheepskin boots and slippers.

WhooooAmI24601 · 28/11/2016 20:17

Ugg Adirondack are lovely; I have them in white and live in them when the weather turns super cold.

Sorel do beautiful snow boots, too, I have the Tofino and they're invincible and lovely to wear all day.

The only other ones I like are Joules Carrick boots. They don't do them on the website any more but they are usually on ebay brand new. They're not as warm as the Sorel or Uggs, but for comfort they're fab, and they look funky enough to wear out and about in winter.

Ohyesiam · 28/11/2016 20:22

Keen make walking boots, and do various styles which are look like normal boots, but are warm and grip well and are fully waterproof. The pair I have have really lasted, and are sooooooooo funky.

Forgetmenotblue · 28/11/2016 20:35

I've got some Skechers boots, like the 'highlander' ones on their uk webpage, but in black. The sole is excellent for grip. They're are also some more 'trainer' style ones if you prefer and ankle length. They are really warm and comfortable, and mine have lasted well.

onedogatoddlerandababy · 28/11/2016 21:40

I have Sorel boots. They are insulated and waterproof, I have them mainly for dog walking/hiking type walking.
I love them, not too snowboot looking and when it's just cold and a bit muddy, a chance to not wear my wellies 🙂

5OBalesofHay · 28/11/2016 21:42

What sort of thing wellie type or more stylish?

Randonneur · 28/11/2016 21:48

I have the merrel captiva buckle down boots, super warm and cosy for the last few winters, haven't yet tested them in snow though!

LittleStripyBee · 28/11/2016 21:54

Marten's Gayle so warm and comfy, I've hardly taken them off these last few weeks.

LittleStripyBee · 28/11/2016 21:56

I'll never learn here

polyhymnia · 28/11/2016 23:59

Thanks so much. Lots of ideas here to go through. Ugg Grandke was one of the styles I was trying to think of and couldn't remember.
In answer to a PP not Wellington types I want - something fir an urban environment in bad weather.

Has anyone tried Celtic & Co's Aqualamb boots? supposed to be waterproof.

Gaelforce · 29/11/2016 10:46

There was another thread recently on same topic. As a result, I ordered these: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00QJF0NFM/ref=pe_385721_37986871_TE_item?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21

I wasn't looking for snow boots, just really toasty boots with good soles.
Can't wait 'till they arrive.
