Ageing dry horrible manky hair problems !!!

Hoping I'm not the only one with this problem and someone will have a bit of advice for me (please!!). Basically the problem is - I'm 47 and my hair has become very dry and split on the the top layer (I don't mean the top of my head, but all around the outside),the hair underneath is fine and not damaged. I currently have it trimmed every 5/6 weeks and although it may be helping it's still dry and splitting. I currently use an Aveda damage repair shampoo and conditioner and try to wash it every other day - I can't leave it any longer as the roots still get a bit greasy and I wake up like Worzel Gummidge Smile. I do colour it as well with Clariol Nice and Easy 24 washes, but someone mentioned on another thread that it can damage hair, so I was wondering if I should change to the colour that only lasts 8 washes, it'll be a pain colouring every week, but if it helps the condition of my hair I don't mind doing it - what do you think? Can anyone recommend any products that I can use that actually work and hopefully condition the hair without making it flat and fine(that's a whole other problem of mine) I don't mind paying a bit extra. I would love to be able to use straighteners occasionally, but I'm paranoid about damaging it even more, so if you now of a really good heat protection spray as well that would be great - thanks. Getting older is CRAP everything starts going wrong !!!Grin

Try some dry shampoo, batiste do a good one. If you can go a day or 2 longer between washes it will help lessen the damage.

Batiste also do a dry shampoo with a hint of colour. You spray it on and the colour develops, might help hide grey roots a bit so you can stretch how often you need to dye it too.

Thanks for your replies Smile
boys why T Gel shampoo? is is good for dry hair? I could try trimming every 4 weeks as a friend cuts my hair (she is a hairdresser!) so it's not too expensive. I've thought about the "big hair" but wondered if I'd end up getting in a tangle with something constantly rotating !!
Kyacat I hadn't thought of dry shampoo, good idea I'll give it a try.
I wish I could go longer between colours, BUT, when I first colour my hair the colour takes really well, too well in fact and it can be quite dark, but within 3 weeks the colour has washed out and my hair looks a weird red/gingery pale washed out colour and that's when I feel I need to colour it again - the roots aren't too bad it's just the overall colour that needs pepping up.

batiste shampoo is a lifesaver in this house as I have an underactive thyroid,am in my 40s & generally have crap hair due to thyroid making my hair thiner, dryer & split more easily, so I try to only wash every 3/4 days but end up with greasy roots (damn hormones) & batiste sees me through.

I am trying not to worry too much about the odd grey hair & only do a permenant colour every couple of months or else it's even drier......& yes in this respect getting older sucks but do love my 40s as imo I am wiser though dh disagrees :o

I dont know about colour I only have one white hair but I do have crap hair if I use any other shampoo but aveda damage remedy. This is what I do,

I put argan oil through it mid length to tip the night before I wash it to condition while I sleep.

I use a silk pillowcase as its supposed to be less damaging and drying to hair than cotton, I was sceptical but it does seem to be beneficial.

I use damage remedy shampoo and conditoner, and the intensive masque 1-2 times a week.

For heat protection I use aveda smooth infusion style prep and smooth infusion glossing straightner and Light elements serum. It has made a massive difference to the conditon of my hair. They are pricey but you can get them off ebay and they last ages e.g my serum will last at least 18months.

I also take brewers yeast and kelp and zinc gluconate (3 seperate tablets) every day to encourage growth. HTH

I have the same, so sympathise. I HAVE to colour every 2-3 weeks as I am very white, though am careful to do the roots only. My hair is now shoulder length but was in much better nick when shorter. I think tying it up is not helping. Watching this thread....

I use this great Macademia nut oil which you rub between your hands then smoothe through wet or dry hair every time you wash it- leaves hair silky and moisturised. This is the stuff. Looks expensive but the bottle lasts for ages.

Fluffy really good advice, thank you! I've got Moroccan oil, is the same thing as argan oil? The Aveda products you use, do they weigh your hair down, as mine can be a bit lank especially on top ( although a Babyliss Big Hair should help with this) and the Light Elements serum is it LE Soothing Fluid? Thanks, again

Moroccan Oil contains argan oil, but also lots of silicones.
