Sheer red lipstick - any recommendations??

I know there are lots of lovely bold red ones but want a sheer/paler one if possible. Not brave enough for bright red! Clinique used to do a lovely sheer red about 10 yrs ago but I can't remember what it was called. They probably don't do it anymore though.

Anyone got a good recommendation??

TIA

Bobbi Brown has one in the shade "Ruby". I think that when I bought it they said it came in two formulations, one sheerer than the other. I can check when I get home, if you like.
I am not brave enough for a pillar-box red lipstick but this one is not as frightening.

Thanks CardiCorgi! Love the BB shimmer brick so will have a look on their website and see what I can find. Didn't think of that so thanks.

Clinique's new Chubby Sticks have a sheer red. If you can buy Lipstick Queen, try Medieval.

I used to have a gorgeous Body Shop one which was very sheer. I can't remember the name though.

I have been looking for months and ended up getting one called sexy lips from Laura Mercier - it's not sheer though (although I was told it was and in the heat of a dept store I think it had melted a bit and looked OK).

I used to love the sheer Clinique ones and asked if they'd be having them again - but no.

M&S do a sheer gloss range as recommended by havingkittens (in a lipstick format) and apparently this month a new red shade is arriving according to the lady at Marble Arch!

Nars do a sheer range but it's quite highly pigmented - manhunt is a corally red.

I'm off to check out the recommendations now, so thanks for the thread.

MAC's Ladybug is a bright red, but a pretty sheer formula, so if you apply to one lip and blot with the other it comes out a nice sheer red.

Chanel Monte Carlo is a nice sheer red.

Thanks for all the info everyone- lots to look at and definitely a shopping trip needed!

You've been busy morag! Shame that Clinique's sheer range is no longer available isn't it, always the way when you find one you like. Hope you find what you're looking for. When I do, I shall buy two! Grin

I use Chanel Macao. It's the only red lipstick that doesn't make me look like a slapper Grin

Aah, Monte Carlo, wish I had, but got Antigone instead....

Ha ha moo moo! Yes that's the danger with a red lippy isn't it. That's just reminded me that I had a Chanel lippy years ago and remember really liking it. Will definitely look at Monte Carlo and Macao. Thinking back, DH might even have bought it for me- by himself and no hints dropped! Plus, if Boots sell it, I can use my points too, even better. Wink

Boots do sell it, Monte Carlo is a pinky red for me.

That is so freaky Time - I'm wondering if we're time-sharing a DH Hmm.

He bought me a goody bag of Chanel which he picked himself, which included the Macao lipstick. It's honestly the best colour lipstick for my colouring which I've ever used and he's very proud of himself because of it.

Oooh moomoo, that's a coincidence isn't it!! I can't remember the name of the colour I got but it was a great shade for me too. Those Chanel assisstants are good Bless the DHs for revelling in their own glory eh?!
You are obviously a better wife than me though because I didn't get the goody bag! Envy

The Bobbi Brown one was "lip sheer" which isn't on their website so I suppose that it has been discontinued. Bother. The colour is still available in a metallic.
The Chanel colours sound nice, I always thought of Chanel lipstick as being terribly grown-up, hmm, maybe I am actually an adult and can wear it.

I also recommend Illamasqua Box (she's a friend of mine) which is about the most heavily pigmented, matte red out there, but you dab it on fingers and apply like that and can top with gloss and use any remaining on the fingers as a blush.

It's a classic blue-based red so as a stain will have a slight pinkiness which makes teeth look really whil

It will last about 20 years like that.

A nice sheer brick red is Nars Flamenco.

I know what you mean about Chanel being very grown up, cardi! Definitely a sophisticated brand.

Although, I just caught myself wondering whether I'm too young to go to the Chelsea flower show, another "grown up" activity.

Otchayaniye MAC have discontinued Vinyl unfortunately, as well as their other really sheer red which I can't for the life of me remember the name. They have brought out a new range called Sheen Supreme lipsticks which have a couple of red shades that are nice. Oh and one in their normal range called Cockney which is pretty too, but sadly all their red lipsticks, especially the sheer ones bleed on me like mad. If I'm on a shoot and don't have time to check my own lipstick, suddenly catching sight of myself in the mirror looking like Ronald McDonald is very embarrassing for someone in my position! Sad

I personally don't get on with Illamasqua lipsticks either as I find them really drying. I'm gutted about this too as they have some amazing reds, and I get a good discount.

I don't think the M&S one bled on me though. I find that the sheer lipsticks with a slightly more waxy texture are less likely to bleed than the really slippy ones.

Clinique do a really nice sheer red but not in the UK (how annoying is that?). I bought one on ebay though. It's called Parisian Red and it's in their Butter Shine range.

Other nice ones I know of are Nars, Estee Lauder's Crystal range, and Lipstick Queen. It's difficult to recommend specific colours because it's such an individual thing to find the right red for you. It's possible to get a solid red without looking like a complete harlot if you find the right shade. Chanel did do one called Velvet which was nice and not too in your face but I don't know if it's still available.

Is the sheer Clinique one you like their "Almost" range? It only seems widely available in Black Honey (purply shade). I used to have a lovely rose pink version :( Bring it back, Clinique!
