Has anyone managed to wear high waisted flared Farrah Fawcett style jeans without looking fat like Martine McCutcheon?

I am tempted to a try a pair of the GAP ones. Has anyone tried these? Or are high waisted trousers a no no for mere mortals?

Did you read the article about them in the Times mag today? They had a pic of the Gap ones.

Yes - that is what has prompted this thread really. The gap ones look lovely. Mind you the J Brand ones look nicer but I am not forking out the best part of £200 for jeans when I am probably going to trample the hems in puddles.

Martine looks fat because she has an hourglass figure - she shouldn't be swamping it in acres of shapeless fabric.
Don't ask me what shape they would suit though!

Didn't get the paper today, which Gap ones? The different-colour-pocket ones or the centre-leg-seam ones?

Hello DIB, haven't seen you around for ages Smile

They were neither of those you have linked to, however I can't find those which were featured in the Times on the gap website Confused

Oh no, are we going back to the "tucked in" look?

Hello Smile

Nabbed Mum's copy of the paper, and those jeans look fab. Haven't seen them in store or online - maybe they'll appear after the glut of discount codes?

Think they tend to do the discount codes to have a clear out before new season stock comes in, so they may be in soon, I guess.

I bought some high waisted, flared indigo jeans in Gap recently. Are those the ones you saw GoML?

I think they are flattering-they are fitted on the thigh and then flare out. The high waist also holds in the tummy!
The only downside for me is that I have a bit of a bottom and the high waist tends to make it look a bit bigger as it kinds of extends for longer than with hipster jeans. Still, overall I really like them and it is great to have an alternative to skinnies as they suit different tops and footwear.

I used the 30% discount code so they were also v reasonably priced, around £32, I think.

My high waisted jeans made my flabby tummy stick out more. It caressed it and exaggerated its shape, instead of being rough and pulling me in like the lower waist kind. :)

I got some J Brand ones in TK Maxx for £24.99! They are high waisted and flared and I had NO idea they were 'on trend'. I am never on trend - so quite pleased with myself.

I look like this in mine. (in my dreams...)

The J Brand ones are not really high waisted though, which is probably why they look so nice in the pic. That and the fact the model has long thin legs!

No - the times article said that the J Brand ones are not really high waisted, hence why they are so flattering.

I keep forgetting to look at fat martine when the advert's on, can anyone find it online?

The Gap ones with darker pockets are in the sale today. I sent them back & went with a pair from River Island instead following an MN recommendation though. I also bought a lovely camel colour pair from RI which will look great with clogs.

Reiss also have some which are worth a look though again they didn't suit me. The H&M ones were awful quality. New Look ok but too baggy at the waist (not a common problem for me), Topshop ones are nice fit and quality denim.

I don't think Martine looks fat - I'd love a figure likes hers but the jeans just don't suit her at all.

No way is she fat.

I think this just goes to prove how distorted women's views are of what is fat/thin

No way does Martine look fat! Ok, the jeans may not be the most flattering ones but she looks curvy and all woman

I hadnt given it much thought but I did think to myself the Jeans Martine wears in that ad do her NO favours whatsoever look cheap, dated and unflattering - I decided someone else MUST have picked them for her!!

She is a curvy girl and generally gets it right.

Gosh she looks horrific in that ad - the stylist must hate her.

I didn't say Martine is fat - far from it, she has a normal woman's figure. However, she does look a lot bigger than she is in those ghastly jeans.

Gap summer season gear coming in stores on 11th April, apparently. Have got eye out for sandals features in Red magazine.
