Autism - Vitamin B6, Magnesuim, Zinc?

guyshahar · 21/06/2011 15:32

Hi - I have read in "Optimum Nutritian for your Child's Mind" - and then backed up in other places - that autism symptoms show great improvement when these supplements are used together. However, it does not discuss doses, or where to find these supplements (which would need to be non-tablets as my son does not chew or swallow solids).

Does anyone have any experience of using these, and of the results? What are the correct doses and what products are recommended?

Elsewhere, I read that when DMG (Di-methyl-glycine!!!) is added to the above, the results are even better. But I don't know what this is or where to find it. Does anyone else?

HUGE!!!
And its a shame I discontinued it few months (if not a year) ago when his behavior improved significantly but recent blood test showed vitamins deficiency of B6, B12, Zinc, Folic Acid among the others and I am awaiting my order of it again.
Niacin also helps from our experience as it supports the nervous system and helps to metabolize the protein, sugar, fat...
My son used to be a runner, an athlete runner that got me in shape I wasnt even in my teens or when I went to the gym 5 times a week. This supplement helped the hyperactivity and the behavior as well as put his emotions in better place after about 3 bottles.

Also I recommend the Kirkman DMG (open the capsules and put it in food, it doesnt taste bad and DS doesnt notice) and the Jarrow B Right formula (but has bright yellow colour noticable on food and some odor) that contains all B vitamins which is the best food for the nervous system. I have been using these 2 since stopping the behavior balance ans still see the benefits.

i would say that good nutrition starts with food not supplements as all these vitamins/minerals are found in food and food is a lot cheaper/better!

but obviously if he is not eating/chewing solids you are very limited.

although not on your list I'd recommend flaxseed oil (Omega 3) as can be added to drinks/foods/yoghurts etc and is good for neurological stuff. I noticed a difference in my son.

I completely agree pedalpants that nutrition should come from the food but considering I cook from scratch and organic every day, DS has a great appetite he still showed vitamin and mineral deficiency on the blood test.

Some bodies dont absorb and make use of the nutrients coming from the food as well as others.

I can second the Omega 3 (even though I give 3.6.9) but that wasnt in the subject title hence I didnt mention.

Thanks a lot, Blue Shark. That's really helped us (and a few others by the sounds of it). Not sure if the quantities are what was recommended, but hey, if it works, it works!!

In case it is helpful to anyone, we followed Patrick Holford's advice and started giving soya lecithin granules in the mornings with his breakfast, and cod liver oil (mixed with a little pineapple juice to disguise the taste). Also, a tablespoon of ground flax, pumpkin, sunflower and sesame seeds each day. Since doing this, we have noticed a difference in energy and eye-contact.

Every little helps.

Will try the DMG next!!

great tip guyshahar, where do you get the ground seeds from?

Folic acid is also recommended for kids with fragile x. My elder son takes it everyday, used to take liquid when he was younger so you can get it. I got it through his paediatrician and it doesn't cost anything.
I'd try that route, might be cheaper and you can get it on repeat...

lol Ben10 I am happy to recommend an excellent product since it did miracles for us and I am not sure why I never brought it up here, I have done on other forums...

Here we focus more on ABA or schooling and my journey to success has been different; I decided to heal the issues from inside out, meaning adjust the diet and the nutrients, supplement with what the research has proven to be working (so choline and B vitamins for speech, DMG and omega for behavior and attention, probiotics etc), then work on the retained reflexes and the auditory issues and then supplement with ABA/VB as I believe when the body and its senses integrates well or better all therapies including ABA soak in better and DS is a living proof.

Hi BlueShark

I get the seeds from Fresh & Wild, but any health food shop should have them - organic are best. Patrick Holford recommends three parts flax seeds to one part each of sesame, pumpkin & Sunflower seeds (so the mix is half flax seeds). Tastes pretty good too - I have started taking this myself.

Could you share more about your approach and how it has helped?

This thread is so interesting ..... I read (a gazillion years ago somewhere) that ADHD may be helped by the following :

High quality Omega 3 - DS was taking for years before dx and part of the compromise in starting Methylphenedate was that he did not need to take this anymore as he hated the "fishy taste" in his mouth when he burped. (my life is full of compromises where my DS is concerned!!!)

B6 - Usually get from health food shops as normal chemists do a bunch of B vitamins together. The info I read suggested kids with ADHD cannot retain B6 easily therefore any they get from food doesnt get absorbed properly leaving them deficient. B6 also helps the body create melatonin (a natural hormone to help induce sleep - explains why ADHD kids often struggle to get to sleep).

Zinc - cant remember why this was supposed to be helpful but I added it to the list as is easy to get hold of from health food shops.

My DS has been on this additional complimentary regime for 4+ years ...... does it help? Dunno? But it certainly doesnt seem to be hurting and every little thing I can do to improve his life I will.

I have never come accross this info since so it is really nice to know I didnt make it all up !!!!!!

This has just arrived. It is really tasty so we will now have "Concentration Medicine" (Omega 3) and "Good Behaviour Medicine". Fingers crossed it works. Thanks again.
