Those who objected to the Chat topic in Ye Olde Days of Mumsnet

Do you post on it?

That's what I want to know. It was before my time, I'm only a wee young whippersnapper of two years' standing but I have caught the references from the Haggard Old Timers that the introduction of Chat caused a lot of ructions.

It's obvious that a chat room is similarly contentious. After careful consideration I think I'm agin' it (sorry, lou ) but if one is set up I doubt I will be able to resist getting involved.

Hence my question. Do those who objected to Chat post on it? Or do you steadfastly ignore those threads in righteous indignation that your objections were overruled?

And if I object to a Chat Room, and we get one, and I go in it, will everyone say I have no moral fibre and go "ha! you hypocrite!"?

I'm sure i've seen one or two of the objectors in the chat topic.

Someone wrote a brilliant poem about it and I'm so sad I've just spent 15 minutes trying to find it (it was called the ballad of mumsnet or something and I think either sobernow or scummymummy wrote it. or maybe someone else whose name begins with S). Does anyone remember what I'm talking about?

It really is only two years, lou (not quite two years actually) - but I think my bum's welded to this chair now and I can't remember what my children look like.

You wouldn't call me a hypocrite, champs? My lovely? Noooooo.

All past objectors (you know who you are) are being remarkably unresponsive to my question...

LOADS of people objected to it

I usually click on a thread because of teh title not teh topic. Having said that, don't think I do post on many chat threads. But can't say I've never done it. More of a Pets girl myself.

So that's where you've been hiding, Tinker. I don't go in pets much.

Urgh, that sounds horrid.

Oh yeah, I remember the rows, lol.

Like Tinks, I go by the title rather than thread topic.

I like chat, sometimes you need the lighter stuff after a long day (but then I was never an objector...)

Where did they all argue about it if not in chat?

other subjects

I'm so sad I've just searched. I have 82 messages in _chat - so no, I don't really use it. I also tend to post on thread titles rather than subjects, and have no objecion to light-hearted threads. What I don't post on are the bars - I don't object to them being there for those that want them, it's just I don't do that whole quickfire conversation thing on here - if I do want to actually talk to somebody I'll do it on MSN where it can be private.

I didn't want chat but can't remember if I actually 'voiced' this....I rarely post on it but I do read the threads when contentious issues blow up.
I have to say though I have no objection to its existence now and don't think its really affected what I get out of mumsnet - though of course I do feel less a part of it because I don't 'know' and am not known by most of the regular chatters.

Marina · 10/03/2005 11:23

Think Pamina has pinned it down...I'm not usually around when the Bars are open, didn't really fancy chat, but of course I post in there if there is a thread I like or can help with. I have an open mind and like Moo will probably end up skulking in a chatroom because I will be unable to resist

Yeah I think people are right. Some stuff is posted in chat that could easily be put elsewhere IMO. Then there are the purely chatty threads - the bars.

I never really know whether I'm a conscientious objector to changes on the site so I usually don't post to vote yay or nay. Chat topics? Rarely look at them.

Toothache · 10/03/2005 12:50

The objection was not having a chat section, but some MN'ers objected to us 'chatting' on sections BEFORE there was a chat section. I can't even remember why, but was it to do with some of us of an evening opening up a 'bar' thread in the other subjects section, so it clogged up the section with online 'chats' rather than 'discussions (???). It was hard to avoid the chats as there were loads. So MN started a chat section and we shunted over there.

I remember it well...... not that I bear grudges or anything.... nooooooo..... not me.
