Well they don't have to actually comply with the new stuff until May 2018 anyway.

Plus of course they don't require you to provide your real personal information - it's not like airbnb where you have to upload photo ID. If you don't want to risk it you can always be janesmith357641197643.

cozietoesio I would expect any firm above 1 or 2 employees to fully comply. And there is data protection legislation in place at the moment. I do want an answer from MN though.

You need to ask them to evidence how they comply. For eg what standards of data security they use. What they store the information on. What procedures they have in place in case of a breach. Have they taken steps to comply with the GDPR.

AshleySilver And they have not said yes either, which I would have expected. I read allegations that MN does not follow data protection legislation, so I posted here expecting reassurance. The fact there is no answer, makes me think the allegations are true.

I posted this in site stuff so they would see it. They are alleged not to follow data protection legislation in terms of how they collect data, secure it, use it, and who has access to it.

I wouldn't necessarily believe everything you read on another site from an anonymous source. Which is probably where this stems from.

If you want MNHQ to respond maybe report your post to bring it their attention..

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is new legislation coming into force in May 2018. Like lots of companies we’re busy working out what this means for us and have a working group in place to ensure we make any necessary changes to the way we handle data in good time.

If we need to change anything material that affects users we'll let you know.

How does that terms of use sit with the fact that you allow users to upload photos? You don’t know that users hold the copyright to the photos they upload.

Copyright isn’t data protection. Data protection is only an issue when daily Fail filches stories if the daily Fail knows or works out the identity of the poster.
Even then there is a big fat get out in the current data protection act for journalism that it could have a good go at relying on.

MN should immediately pull any photos of children where they can be identified but that is a safeguarding matter more than a data protection matter.

Of course there are. By making us agree not to submit them, MN are not responsible for the copyright infringement, the users who post them are. Though I imagine that if an infringement were brought to their attention, they would remove photos.
