Which one would that be? There seem to have been rather a lot of late.

Report
Redroses11 · 07/03/2016 19:23

Yes, apparently it was a TAAT so it was zapped.

MN did however say that it was a discussion that needed to be had and to start a new one (or something like that).

Deletetheheat · 07/03/2016 19:24

Yes, like the one before it yesterday. And this one will run to 12 pages too and everyone will say the same things and this will be zapped too Wink

People kept asking who the troll was. So it became a TAAT and a personal thread about the troll.

It doesn't matter who the troll is/was. She won't use that name again so what it the point in discussing her. No-one knows who she is.

Oh good I'm glad we're back, thanks op.
I was just going to post when it was zpped.

I know that banning doesn't help as they can come back under a different name, but I do think nn should be published when something like this happens where people are affected.
Who knows who else has been affected by a particular troll, the info the troll has received and how many other things they could be capable of.
At least knowing who they were gives us the option of name changing if we think it's best for ourselves.

Sorry, I'm not talking about any troll in particular, as it happened to me a while back.
Somebody started posting a story that was so similar to snippets I had posted over the years, collected all the info and posted it as their story.
It was too unusual and specific to be a coincidence.

If the name had been known to all because of this, then anybody else affected by her/him under the same username could have changed their names for future anonymity.
It does matter what name they used.

I dont think namechanging matters all that much. It is easy now to set up two or more seperate accounts between devices and networks.
I like the idea of a post counter. A vague one, under 100, 1000 +, massive big number only computers understand Wink. People say it encourages accusations of royalty and so on, but it's easy enough to recognise the non namechangers after a while. I nc quite a lot. The internet is forever and I quite like being relatively anonymous

I didn't ask for the name via PM because it protects against future trolling but because I've exchanged PMs already with somebody about the topic at hand in the right time frame. Nobody will tell me though and all these threads have done is raised suspicion around that topic.

There's nowt to be gained from generic troll threads. It's all been said. We can just hang another portrait under the bridge and let it slip into MN folklore. Until next time.

firesidechat · 07/03/2016 19:49

Please don't start another one whatever you do. MN will zapp it. Again.

But in a certain case, there was nothing that anyone could have done to protect people. If people are determined enough, they will spin a tangled web of lies.

What can be done about trolls? They have been around since the dawn of Internet forums. If name changing is banned, people will simply open new accounts and do it that way. That is exactly what they do on the other forums I use.

These kinds of attention-seeking people are born everyday, they only thrive if they have an audience, and they only have an audience when people hang onto every word that they're saying, and over invest to the point where they end up being hurt when the truth is revealed.

You have to, by default take most of what you read with a pinch of salt. You have to by default, protect yourself, especially when you are revealing a vulnerable side of yourself online. Just like you would not stop a stranger in the street and divulge your inner most thoughts and troubles to them, or invite them into your home to discuss their own problems. If you choose to take things further, you do so at your own risk not knowing what that person's real intentions are. You don't know who is behind the username, that knowledge is all you need.

The poster just sounded so fake...

Which thread was this now?

Report
SoThatHappened · 07/03/2016 22:28

There was a thread on AIBU with a woman posting about a 10 yo boy and 6 yo girl.

She found sexually explicit pictures on her 10 yo sons phone of him touching his sisters genitals.

It was so fake sounding. So calm....

IP addresses can be banned too - that's what we did on a forum I used to be a mod on. Although that was years ago and I think the tech has moved on enough for people to easily hide/change IP addresses.

What was the tickling one?

Report
LineyReborn · 07/03/2016 22:34

So basically, new / namechanging posters focusing on young children and their genitals / bodies.

How can people NOT think 'troll'?

Report
MissBeaHaving · 07/03/2016 22:35

A poster saying her baby was being tickled by the grandmother in an inappropriate way but her husband didn't agree with herHmm
