Are we mad to want to move to Bury??

From the heart of Manchester, we're really seriously considering moving to Bury. Smaller town, cleaner, safer, better for DD, blah blah.

Anyone from Bury? Anyone KNOW anyone from Bury? Anyone know Bury?!
Any opinions and advice welcome!

I lived in Ramsbottom for ages, DH is from Bury.

Whereabouts were you thinking?

Ramsbottom is nice. Rossendale valley nicer, imo.

Lizzylou, the only area we've kind of seen is Brandlesholme, which we like.

I agree with you Dee Grin

Ummm, Brandlesholme, the new estate? I do know that when they were first built they had a lot of burglaries there. What sort of budget do you have? Where do you need to get to for work etc? Do you need schools? Primary or Secondary?

I'd go for Rammy/Holcombe Brook area over Brandlesholme to be honest. Or Greenmount if you can stretch to it.

I dont know anything about Brandlesholme Im afraid. Ive only seen afew streets of it, by driving around. I was told by someone at lives theres that they have very few burglaries/break ins in the area .
We're first time buyers, and our budget is around £150,000.

It depends what you're looking for.

Brandlesholme is fine. Easy distance to Bury. I believe the schools in north Bury are generally better than south.

Just a bit further up from Brangy Smile is Greenmount/Holcombe Brook then Ramsbottom. All good schools. Clean. No dog poo to dodge on the pavements (I notice this because I live near dog poo alley Hmm). Loads of victorian terraces, mainly on main roads then 60s/70s/80s estates off the mainroads.

Ramsbottom is a lovely market town with good motorway links but too expensive in taxi fares from Manchester for me!

I like Prestwich as I can get in to Manchester on the tram and taxi back from nights out is only a tenner.

property is cheaper in Racliffe for a reason.

How many of you are there, Spareroom?
What size of house are you looking for?

Radcliffe itself is v cheap and not great, but there are outlying areas that are OK.

I know that when they built the new estate in Brandlesholme there were a spate of burglaries, but that was years ago.

I think it does feel safe in Greenmount/Holcombe Brook/Ramsbottom, but my parents have been burgled twice up there - sometimes nicer areas are targeted specially I think as there's nice stuff to rob IYSWIM.

Tottington may suit your budget, depending on whether you want a house/garden/flat or whatever. Mre of a village feel than Brandlesholme and some parts of it still have actual fields nearby.

Just to clarify, my parents don't have nice stuff to rob - we were the scrote family who bought in the area when it was cheap! Blush

We moved from Bury down to the Midlands for DH work about 3 months ago. I really miss it. Had lived there for 10 years.

Some nice houses up near Clarence Park, on north side of Bury. Easily walkable into town centre and the park is lovely.

Brandleshome nice but traffic can be busy in mornings if you are trying to get out of Bury onto Motorway or into Manchester.

Agree that Rammy/Holcombe and Greenmount are lovely and that is where we were planning to move to but DH got made redundant and we had to move for work.

We loved the fact we were right on top of the moorland/countryside for walks and DH hobby mountainbiking. Bury is good for shopping. The market has some great fruit/veg stalls and fish etc, plus Katsouris deli ,and Automatic lounge for lunches, drinks.
I believe the big development on the Rock has opened now so even more shops.

Only 30mins into Manchester on tram. Schools wise I think Chesham Primary has an excellent offsted report. I don't know much about the high schools, but there is also Bury Grammar.

Can you tell I am really missing Bury?

Summerseat is lovely

You can get quite a lot for 150 can't you?

Report
Lizzylou · 01/09/2010 15:35

Agree Zinglebert, Summerseat is gorgeous but if you need to get to the motorway to work it is a nightmare to get in and out of.
OK if you are going the Brandlesholme road side to Bury/Bolton.
