Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
//sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
//www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
//cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

eallison your day release sounds great. And your description of bodily effluence in pregnancy Grin I’m afraid I am also one whose husband has been subjected to it all. I moved past farting and vomit long ago, it was pooing during labour with DC1 that really opened DH’s eyes Blush Grin but I’ve seen all sorts with him too through his gastro surgeries, caring for him after etc so we’re sort of even now I guess!

Hope you’re feeling better soon Reastie the normal feeling is what spurs me on, I keep thinking once this baby is born I’m going to be sore and exhausted at least for the early days and weeks but I won’t be sick and eventually it will all pass.

I am however going to have to lose a lot of weight once I’m back to relative normal! I’m developing my pregnancy chubbiness, face is getting rounder, and I’m eating okay (cyclizine has helped with that a lot since early days), but I move very little, so the sedentary life isn’t doing me many favours!

I hope everyone has had a good day. Quiet & uneventful here today, which is no bad thing.

I don’t think that there are many bodily functions left sacred in this house any more 😂

Beforeihit yes to the weight gain. I know a lot of people here have the opposite issue but I’m finding the medication touch wood controls the actual sickness (but sadly not the nausea) and eating frequently and resting also helps the nausea. I’m constantly trying to fight this by eating less or moving more but it just makes the symptoms dire so I’m trapped in a sedentary eating pattern. I will have hard work getting back to my normal but I’m grateful in a way for this and not being malnourished from lack of being able to eat I know is so common with this.

Depressingly bad nausea yesterday afternoon/evening and also dire one sided headache yesterday too and insomnia last night so feeling sorry for myself today. Am taking my bp later to check it’s not high as that was actually my first proper killer pg headache (I guess I’m lucky to have got that far)

DH got the job! He starts on Tuesday.

Nausea here. Not slept well for 2 days now at least, so hoping to go back to sleep before we go swimming this afternoon.

👋 everyone. Hope your Thursdays are restful. I have an afternoon of working from home ahead then weekend yey. Slightly apprehensive about Easter Sunday though because DH is playing cricket and I have the 16mo all on my own eek.

I unexpectedly got my first lot of results back this morning. It’s not downs, Edwards or patau. Phew!
Still a way to go for an all clear, but we are very happy with today’s news.

Hope you’re feeling better today @Reastie.

Well done to your dh @DeadDoorpost. That must be a weight off your mind.

Good luck on Sunday @ElkieMacjibe! It’s the kind of day CBeebies was made for.

How are you today @eallison88? I hope all is still calm for you.

Waves to everyone else. I did contemplate a joke about eating Easter eggs this weekend, but I have a feeling most of us won’t be partaking! 🐣

Cattaxi that’s fantastic news, what a relief, and good to get the news earlier than you thought too.

Elkie good luck for Sunday!

Dead that’s brilliant news about the job.

Have a definite sore throat here so wondering if feeling worse is related to coming down with something (again). Dd and dm told me today when I said I had a sore throat they both have one too so looks like I’ve got dd to thank once again for yet another bug. Feeling sorry for myself and resting on the sofa.

Definitely no Easter eggs being consumed here! I don’t eat chocolate in any case.

Wonderful, two pieces of the happiest news. cattaxi I am so delighted for you. I am sure they were the biggest worries by far. Ha, ha, about 'bodily functions no longer being sacred in your house'. Smile Flowers Star You were very stoic!
DeadDoorPost And excellent news from you! Smile Flowers Congratulations. Who is he working for, I think you said further back? Now you have more stability in options for housing.
Reastie That sounds like a migraine, surely? Possibly caused by hormones?
I am glad that beforeihit30 and Reastie arre eating, anyway. You have an excuse for some chubbiness.
I hope some of the current sufferers manage to take down more chocolate than in Mother Hen's recommended 'milk shakes (maybe soya)' spiel. Anyway, I can't eat much chocolate myself, as I find it a migraine trigger if I have more than a minimal amount...

Lucinda I wondered if it was a migraine as the computer screen was uncomfortable to use when it was bad but I could read my book ok. The headache was definitely reminiscent of a migraine but the visual disturbances were different.

Thanks ladies!

LucindaE he'll be working through FDM buy contracted out to other companies. He bought his bike for some of the commute today. He's happy.
It also sounds like we've been offered to stay here with the in laws for longer but I didn't hear half the conversation so don't know what to think. FiL did say we'd be able to save more instead of renting but that's all I heard. I'll ask DH to catch me up later.

We went swimming today. DS loved it, I helped relieve my nausea by floating, and DH had fun playing with DS.

That's good news about the results cattaxi

@beforeIhit30 I've put on far too much weight too. Like Reastie the drugs stop the vomiting but an even vaguely empty stomach makes me feel really nauseous so I'm eating too much but movement also makes me nauseous so I'm not doing anything. At 24 weeks I now weigh what I did at the end of my previous 2 pregnancies, and some of my maternity clothes don't fit properly anymore....

@cattaxi glad your results so far are OK.

Reastie · 19/04/2019 10:50

Teddy yes I have that too! I’ve tried so many time to do exercise (exercised every day pre pg) or even just pottering round the house but the activity is a huge nausea trigger and I’m still struggling to find the balance. I want to do stuff so much but have to stop myself as I know it’ll make me feel dire but I hate sitting around but don’t have much of an option. Even things like sitting and using the sewing machine can be a trigger Sad . And if I don’t eat constantly I get trapped in a vicious circle of nausea. Last pg I put on about 5 stone (estimated as I was too scared to weigh myself) and went up 2 dress sizes. And the ironic thing is I hated pretty much every mouthful of food the entire pg. I didn’t want to eat but I had to or else the nausea got more intense. This time I’m nearly up to 3 stone and have about 2 months to go. I’m aiming for a 1 stone reduction from last times weight gain which would be really good progress. I know it’s more than recommended and more than most people but I doubt anyone else wouldn’t be doing the same thing to protect themselves. If I didn’t eat constantly and did stuff despite the medicine the vomiting would be dire and I’d get into horrible issues with that. I always feel like a fraud on here gaining so much weight when so mnay people have the opposite problem which I’m sure must be really awful but knowing that others have the vomiting controlled with drugs which is also leading to weight gain issues is really reassuring as it’s a real mental issue for me. I became very depressed post dd due to my weight gain and it became a bit of an obsession of mine, to the point I dropped well over 100lbs and obsessively exercised and diet watched pre preg. I was scared of weight gain. Obviously I’m now looking at being a few stone heavier post pg which I’m struggling with mentally but I’m just trying to limit damage where possible and hope I can be more diligent in the first year at reintroducing physical activity.

Eal are they letting you have any time at home over Easter?

Dead i assume you get on well with your in-laws? I can’t imagine anything worse than living with mine! Interesting about floating in the pool helping the nausea. When I’m trying to sleep I often imagine myself on a hammock or floating in water (it’s part of some kind of sleep training I’m attempting that they teach soldiers to get to sleep easily when in combat but it hasn’t really worked for me yet) and imagining that always makes me feel more sick with the rocking motion!

Today I am attempting to clean and tidy the sitting room. It’s taken me all morning to do minimal. It would be so nice to have just one clean and tidy room. Not sure I’ll managed to complete the task but fx.

Reastie and Teddy that’s really reassuring for me as well. I know what you mean, where I feel like many women with hyperemesis are struggling with weight loss but here I am getting porky Blush in my second pregnancy I gained more than my first, in the third tri because I had issue with false contractions and basically couldn’t really go anywhere or do much and was hungrier than earlier in pg, but that was just for the third tri. I do worry about just how large I might get this time around with being sedentary and more hungry from much earlier on in pregnancy! I’ll have about 8 months from birth to returning to work, so I’m conscious of trying to fit into at least some of my pre-pregnancy work clothes! But I’m hoping that without the nausea I can return to a much more normal way of eating for me, and being more able to move I will be out and about and being more active, and doing some exercise as well (once I’ve healed a bit, I learned the hard way trying to do too much after DC1 and loosened a stitch and got infected Confused).

Weather is lovely and I have no plans! I suppose I should be grateful I’m currently able to sit in the kitchen and not just my bedroom Grin saw GP yesterday who had lots of questions about my underlying condition (I’ve been having spikes in my blood work which is very unusual, so my medication is the highest it’s ever been and I’m seeing the consultant again soon), she thinks it might be making the sickness worse and I remembered reading about the connection. Plus the fact they’re checking for a UTI again (no symptoms, again, just trying to do all the right things) so that could also be making me feel worse. Well anyway, I feel like their optimism for my speedy recovery is diminishing and she’s signed me off for 5 more weeks! I’m glad I don’t have to think about it though for another month.

I'm allowed day release each day, which will continue as long as baby cooperates and no bleeding or labour!! My blood sugars are a nightmare in hospital cos of their crap food (risotto with a side of roast potatoes was last night's offering...!). If they go above 10 they reckon I'm not allowed day release; they were 9.4 After breakfast today. They've never been that high! I had a bit of an argument with them as when I'm at home eating my food my sugars are so much better - e.g. after lunch yesterday I was 5.4! I was totally prepared to discharge myself if they were gonna be awkward about it. Luckily they saw sense!

reastie we do what we have to do to get thru, and if that's eat constantly then that's what we do! I had about 2 months after starting steroids of eating constantly, and put loads of weight on. Spending the last 2 weeks in hospital and food being tricky means I've lost a lot of that weight recently...!!

beforei it's good they're signing you off for so long; no pressure. If you are able to return earlier, they can sign you as fit for work.

Reastie I'm lucky to have great in-laws. I couldn't live with them forever though but being pregnant and having them here has been a lifesaver on more than one occasion. As for the floating, I just find it so relaxing, especially if my ears are under the water. The noise level drops and I could easily fall asleep. Will have to go more often the further along I get.

I've spent the first week of my annual leave lying in bed with a continuous migraine which has finally gone today 🙌

How's everyone coping?💕
I've officially ran out of pills today and can't get anymore so I'm seeing how I cope this weekend and if I survive then I'll just go without but I've been quite good the past couple of weeks so here's hoping (two weeks since I last vomited!)
Nausea is still a bitch though.

avocadoo A migraine for a week? That is so horrible; I was threatened with admisson once - non pregnant - after having a migraine for five days. Poor you. Here's some Flowers.
Reastie and DeadDoorPost That is so intriguing about visualising floating as a sleep inducing technique. When I float, the noises seem to be louder with ears are underwater, oddly, and distorted, but it isn't unpleasant ...DeadDoorPost They sound such nice in-laws. [smile} Happy news about bike and swimming.
Teddyreddy and Reastie and befoeihit30) Hopefully breast feeding will burn up lots of calories?

I hope everyone is coping on this beautiful day.
