Winter coats, is it worth buying maternity one?

Just wondering if other mums and mum's to be have bothered with maternity coats. Baby due in January and I can just about fit into my normal winter coat but not for much longer. Should I look at getting a bump friendly one or just buy one a few sizes bigger to accommodate bump as it grows?

No, just use your normal coat and don't close it. Or use a meter of bailing twine to connect the button to the button hole. Pure fashion.

I got one. It was so comfy. It looked fine when I wasn't pregnant too.

If you can afford it I would get a maternity one. You want to be warm and comfortable. Afterwards if you are intending on carrying your baby in a sling, he / she can be cosy in the sling inside your coat.

I just used my normal coat with a big chunky scarf

I bought a big parka from Zara and then used this after having the baby to keep him cosy in his sling.

november, december and january could be very long and cold without a decent coat.
I would get something.

I've just bitten the bullet and ordered one from mamalicious. I'm due a couple of months after you, but my inflated boobs have meant that my usual coats are now straining at the buttons, which isn't a great look...

I was same as Chaby.

It depends on how much you walk. My commute to work involves a mile walk from the bus stop and I don't drive. I was due in January and it was a very wet winter so on windy, rainy days my wool coat and scarf just didn't cut it (my dhs waterproof coat stopped fitting too) so I had to go with a hooded parka with a fleece lining. Hated it but asos delivered next day and it kept me warm and dry.

Do try ebay, just don't leave it until you definitely 'need' the coat as you won't be able to get one and your pregnancy hormones will mean you get very upset that people are better at ebay than you!

Get a Cape coat. Mamas and Papas do a good one. You can layer up underneath and it covers your belly whatever the size. Can also be worn outside of pregnancy and you can't really tell! 😊

I did but then I'm a dog owner so walk every day. I also walked to and from work. it was a bitch finding a waterproof coat though - ended up with a pricey one from Mamalicious which I subsequently sold on eBay for half the money so not all bad

H&M have a really warm and waterproof hooded parka at the moment for £39.99. It's khaki coloured. I recommend it.

I've just ordered maternity coats from H&M to try. Also due late January and my lovely down coat that I bought last year is straining round me now and I don't want to ruin it by stretching it. I'll let you know if it's any good! I can't stand being cold and with a school run to do a decent coat is a must. Much more expensive being pregnant in winter! My DD was an August baby, all I needed were a couple of pairs of mat jeans and a handful of maternity vest tops.

Thanks all! Am watching a few on eBay. If I don't get one, I'll have a look at buying one from the above mentioned stores. I hadn't thought about sling situation. I'm getting a boba wrap, so it would seem wise to have a coat that fits baby and me comfortably!

I got a cape style one from Jojos. I was dubious about the cost but I wore it everyday for about 5 months (I was due early March). I see them quite often for sale on my local parents FB selling site.

I've got something called zip us in which is a panel you add to your normal coats and can be used during pregnancy and for baby wearing. I got my direct but boots sell them too.

I bought a second hand one. Absolute bargain, and I did wear it lots, so probably could have justified a new one in the end, but I didn't know that would be the case when I bought it.

Asos do good parka style maternity coats and good prices. And the one I had had a removable fur lining so lasted through milder weather too.

I didn't bother and I had a January baby and a February baby, but then I had a small bump so I got away with a normal coat for all but the last month, and then I wore a big cardigan instead.

I bought a generous fleece. And it meant it would zip up over baby in a sling as well, which is the warmest way to travel afterwards!

I got one too. Was due early Feb.

It did make life much nicer, not having to 'make do'. Just got a fairly cheap H&M one I think it was.

I wore it more than a lot of other maternity bits I bought!

I've just got a lovely thick one from H&M which was £50 but I got it for £37 plus free delivery when I signed up to receive their newsletter. I think I saw it on vouchercodes, it's 25% off any order plus free delivery.
I thought I'd sell it on after to get a bit back.

I got one from Asos. It was about £50 but worth every penny. Due January too.

I practically lived in my jojo mamans mat swing coat, and it was probably my best maternity purchase. I didn't have a bump until I was about 6m, but from 4m my boobs and ribcage had spread enough that I needed something roomier. I need to look smart for work, (and I live in freezing Scotland) so letting an old coat hang open and covering up with a scarf wouldn't have worked for me.
