Valpollicella · 13/12/2010 22:25

...said by me to DS this evening.

DP overheard and says, "No, it isn't? It's nearly two weeks away"

Me:"Errrm Hmm Well it's not 'this' Saturday is it?"

DP: "No, because this Saturday is 'next Saturday' Christmas Day is on 'the' next Saturday"

Me: "Fine, I'll start a thread..."

Grin

Please, I know I'm right, aren't I?

And I know I am, I'm only really posting this so I can get some back up and show him the thread

Sorry, but I'm with your DP.

Don't make it any closer than it has to be. Please.

I'd say 'a week on Saturday'.

OK when I hear "next Saturday" on a Monday, I clarify with the speaker which Saturday they mean.

Certainly "the Saturday of next week" is one possible meaning; as is "the next Saturday we get to".

If it was Thursday or so then I think you mean the former; on a Monday it's debatable. To be clear, I personally would say "Saturday next week".

Thanks Tethers Grin

I might just have to do a cut and paste job into Word and print it for him, if it looks like I am wrong

So sorry.

Please blame the head full of gunk I have courtesy of weird flu thing...

To me, next Saturday is the next Saturday we get to - so in this case in 5 days time.

Christmas Day is a week on Saturday.

I'm with you. Christmas is next Saturday.

ClaireDeLoon · 13/12/2010 22:34

I think Saturday week would be Christmas Day, this Saturday would be 18th and next Saurday would be ambiguous.

Report
Hassledge · 13/12/2010 22:35

You're wrong, he's right. Sorry.
The next Saturday which will occur is the 18th December. So that's next Saturday. It is the next time that a Saturday will occur.

tethersjinglebellend · 13/12/2010 22:36

So, nexters, when people say "this Saturday", what on earth do you think they mean? Confused

Report
Hassledge · 13/12/2010 22:37

Next:

  1. Nearest in space or position; adjacent: the next room.
  2. Immediately following, as in time, order, or sequence: next week; the next item on the list.

So that would be the 18th, then.

This Saturday and Next Saturday are not mutually exclusive though

Report
Hassledge · 13/12/2010 22:38

If someone today said to me "this Saturday", I would have no idea whether they meant the 11th or the 18th. "This" is vague. "Next" is specific.

Ok, so "next week" starts when?

Why is Saturday (this week) next Saturday?

You're all mad (apart from Valpollicella)

Grrr, Hassledge, you and your witty xmas namechange Wink

I turned up for a netball match once a week early because of this very issue. Though, i was RIGHT obviously and they were WRONG. I was in primary school and was devastated. I always check what people mean now.
