Kiss your baby

Hi, I have an 8 month old daughter and sometime I give her a little peck on the lips if we are playing and laughing.

Is it wrong to kiss your child on the lips? I know 100% I don't have any viruses or nasties and I know that from a certain age it becomes inappropriate.

I used to kiss both my parents on the lips this stopped when I was about 8.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Absolutely no way! I do hope this isn't going to become something parents are shamed for; what is the world coming to! Confused

Yes. Totally inappropriate.

I kiss both my children on the lips. I don't need to justify that to anyone and nor do you. It's a mother's love. It's natural.

I don't think babies should be kissed on the lips by anyone personally. Their boccinator muscles are not developed yet so they can't purse their lips so you're kissing their open mouths. Unhygienic. Don't like it. Just my personal opinion!

Bamb it's so interesting you feel that way I'm not wanting to sound rude can I just ask though why you feel this way? Please don't take this question as rudeness I really don't mean to cause any offence.

My DD is 6 weeks old and I have and will kiss every single inch of her from head to toes. I have kissed her open mouth whilst attacking her poor face with my love and she wriggles and smiles and moves about.

Kiss your baby.

There was a similar thread about child-parent lip kissing on here a few years ago.

This will no doubt go the same way.

50% will say it's gross and inappropriate and the other 50% will say there's nothing wrong with it etc etc.

Personally I think any offence caused by child-parent kissing says more about the offendee than the offender.

My son is 20 months. He'll grab my face tp give me a kiss, sometimes its all opened mouthed and slobbery. Its gross cos he's dribbly but its sweet and won't last forever nor cause hon untold psychological damage.

I love kissing my dd anywhere including the lips. I was surprised to learn recently that doctors think it's sexual and stimulates children/babies I think it's a load of rubbish personally but wanted get others views.

People will sexualise anything these days.

Exactly what would a baby gain from being kissed on the lips instead of on the top of their head?

You're doing it purely for you. It's unnecessary.

You could say a baby doesn't gain anything from being kiss anywhere head, lips, hands, toes. It's a show of affection surely people should be able to kiss their babies where they please without it being sexual or the parent being shamed?

Because lips feel nicer!!! That's my babies put everything in their mouths! Jeez I thought this was common knowledge?

Sensual does not equal sexual. Anyone who doesn't understand the difference is either very twisted or just sadly lacking in their sensory experiences.

Not inappropriate at all. My 12 year old still kisses me on the lips. I'll stop when he wants to stop

I never used to kiss my babies on the lips. Anywhere else, oh yummy yes! But lips just didn't feel right. Don't know why. Dh was the same.

When our babies started kissing us, they kissed us on our lips, so we gradually got into that habit, too. And just continued. (Still kiss anywhere else!)

Dc1 started turning their face at about 13, and choosing to kiss us on the cheek, so we followed their lead - if they're not comfortable with lip-kissing any more, then it's time for us to change what we do.

I think it's very wrong personally. Kissing on the lips is meant for partners & during sex.

My daughter tries to kiss me on the lips but I avoid it by pulling away and turning my cheek to her to kiss.

I asked my Mum (Doctor) about this and she said "Good God no! I don't know anyone who kisses their child on the lips!! Totally inappropriate & wrong. Not to mention Germs which can transfer into their mouthes easier. And there are more Germs in your mouth than on a toilet seat!"

Blah to germs, I have a toddler. They're like puppies and everything goes in their mouth and then in mine cos he loves me most!!

Surely kissing is only sexual if your thinking sexual thoughts. Kissing a stomach is sexual if you're naked with DP but if its a little podgy toddler tummy its just yummy cute. DS loves kisses - feet, hands, neck, mouth, etc. As neither of us are thinking sexual thoughts or getting aroused its not sexual!

When he was a tiny baby I never kissed my DS on the mouth (just every where else on his delicious little face) now he's 14 months I ask him for a kiss and make the lip smacking kiss sound and sometimes he brings his mouth close to mine and I then kiss his mouth. Sometimes at this request he smacks me in the face thoughShock I still kiss him elsewhere on his face and head without asking though, I just like to give him the choice about his mouth because it really isn't necessary, but that's just my opinion.

That said I don't think there's anything wrong at all with kissing your baby on the mouth, op, their little milky breath is the bestGrin

Anyone who thinks kissing your baby on their mouth is wrong is sick in the head. OF COURSE it's ok!

Gosh, there are some extreme comments on this thread! How can a parent innocently kissing their baby be "totally inappropriate"?! Of course it isn't sexual. Confused

Personally, I have always avoided kissing dd on the lips, primarily because I didn't like the slobberiness! However, I can't imagine judging anyone else for doing it!

If your dd is happy with it, OP, that's all that matters.
