Kiss your baby

Hi, I have an 8 month old daughter and sometime I give her a little peck on the lips if we are playing and laughing.

Is it wrong to kiss your child on the lips? I know 100% I don't have any viruses or nasties and I know that from a certain age it becomes inappropriate.

I used to kiss both my parents on the lips this stopped when I was about 8.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Hi navy, I have never allowed anyone who
Isn't me or dds daddy to kiss her on the lips and I would never expect or want her to even grandparents. We only do it if we are playing aswell. I get what you mean I was made to kiss other family members when I was young I remember getting to an age where I felt uncomfortable with this.

The anthropology of kissing is based on parents, particularly mothers sharing food from mouth to mouth with their young. It's why we kiss .

Originally nowt to do with sex. Same as breasts and feeding. They have become sexualized.

There are cultures were related grown men kiss each other on the lips as a sign of affection. It isn't sexual at all. Following the child's lead is vital. I never make my dd kiss me or anyone else. She has the right to say no. My newborn gets kissed and cuddled constantly. As she grows I'll follow her lead too.

Dh and I both kiss our children on the lips. We don't force them to kiss us and I guess they will say when they don't want to kiss us anymore. Although I still kiss my dad so I hope my children still kiss me when they are grown up. It's definitely not sexual or inappropriate. It's abnormal display of affection within a family.

Although we did have an awkward situation a while ago when we were in a hospital waiting room and dc3 (age 2) kept grabbing my face and kissing me on the lips over and over again. Very sweet but I hope no one watching had any negative thoughts about it. I tried to distract him from doing it!

Totally appropriate! I think they will definitely stop when they are ready to. I love kissing my 4yr old and she tells me everyday she loves me and vice versa!
My 3mth old also kisses me on the lips but I'm pretty sure he is looking for food! Chubby little thing!

Hope this helps

I kiss 1yo DS on the lips. As PP have said it isn't remotely sexual. He is just so ridiculously kissable. The only part I would never kiss is his genitalia. Lips, cheeks, feet, hands, tummies etc are all fair game in my opinion. He has just started the open mouthed slobbery kisses and they are the best thing ever :)

The only reasons for it to be negative that I can see are health ones e.g. cold sores or passing on tooth decay bacteria but so long as people are careful about those (don't kiss during a cold sore outbreak and don't spit in your baby's mouth!) then what's the problem?

I admit I thought it was weird before DD came alone, probably because I don't ever remember my parents kissing me on the lips, but once she was born it just felt natural. I'll continue to kiss her on the lips until she stops wanting to - she occasionally turns her head away now at 6 but other times demands it.

Apologies I haven't read the whole thread.

My mum still tries to kiss me on the lips and I'm 38!! It drives me mad, I hate it

You love your baby, nothing wrong with head to toe kisses.

Yes agree with the PPeho said they would never kiss Simone else's baby on the lips.

I would kiss nieces or nephews on the cheek or head, but for young babies unless the baby was a relative eg niece or nephew, I would avoid kissing them at all. I would never kiss a friends baby (eh baby under 1). Older kids that aren't relatives I would give a kiss on the cheek.

I am not a hugely affectionate person so I would feel more comfortable giving a kiss on the head or cheek or tummy instead, but I wouldn't judge others who felt comfortable doing this as long as the child seemed happy with it. If the child doesn't like it then it's an absolute no.

I didn't kiss DD on the lips when she was very small as I didn't want to introduce more germs to her but at some point I started to. Can't quite remember when but certainly by 12 months. She's almost 2 now and often gives me a kiss on the lips of her own accord which is lovely Smile I really can't see that it's something to get worked up about but I guess it's due to how you were brought up and what was normal to you.

He just worked it out himself really although I did used to do it in quite an exaggerated way to him. I was pleased when the tongue risk subsided.

splendide how dovi teach DS to pucker?? Slobber - ok. Tongue and biting - yukky slobber overload

Mine used to grab people by the ears and attack them with an open mouth kiss. Was pretty intense. He's 2 now and kisses me on the lips all the time but it's a proper pucker up kiss rather than open mouthed slobber.

I love kissing him!

Right, if you kiss your baby on the lips that's fine. If you don't that's also fine. This doesn't have to be a thing.

Jujubeanz- same here! Not likely to jump in to bed with her any time soon either!

I can't believe people think it's wrong! I kiss my baby on his lips and I always get a massive smile/laugh afterwards!

I kiss my girls on the lips and they're 10 + 7.
This is sexual? - What a load of bollox!
Next week we will be told that holding hands is sexual, or tickling them is foreplay.
And if your worried about germs I suggest you never touch a door handle, never press a lift button, atm machine or pedestrian crossing button unless wearing gloves at all times!
