We had such a good time making a cake with these buttons....my daughter loved making the flowers out of the buttons (& sneakily eating a few along the way!! 😂)

Ingredients

For the cake
225g/8oz plain flour
350g/12½oz caster sugar
85g/3oz cocoa powder
1½ tsp baking powder
1½ tsp bicarbonate of soda
2 free-range eggs
250ml/9fl oz milk
125ml/4½fl oz vegetable oil
2 tsp vanilla extract
250ml/9fl oz boiling water

For the chocolate icing
200g/7oz plain chocolate
200ml/7fl oz double cream

Method

1.Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Grease and line two 20cm/8in sandwich tins.

2.For the cake, place all of the cake ingredients, except the boiling water, into a large mixing bowl. Using a wooden spoon, or electric whisk, beat the mixture until smooth and well combined.

3.Add the boiling water to the mixture, a little at a time, until smooth. (The cake mixture will now be very liquid.)

4.Divide the cake batter between the sandwich tins and bake in the oven for 25-35 minutes, or until the top is firm to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean.

5.Remove the cakes from the oven and allow to cool completely, still in their tins, before icing.

6.For the chocolate icing, heat the chocolate and cream in a saucepan over a low heat until the chocolate melts. Remove the pan from the heat and whisk the mixture until smooth, glossy and thickened. Set aside to cool for 1-2 hours, or until thick enough to spread over the cake.

7.To assemble the cake, run a round-bladed knife around the inside of the cake tins to loosen the cakes. Carefully remove the cakes from the tins.

8.Spread a little chocolate icing over the top of one of the chocolate cakes, then carefully top with the other cake.

9.Transfer the cake to a serving plate and ice the cake all over with the chocolate icing, using a palette knife

It was delicious!!! 😋

Well we have two or three ideas so we had great fun messing around last night with pancakes! Chocolate button pancakes - 125g flour, 1 egg, 1 yolk, 300 ml milk and as many buttons as you can drop before it's too hot!
What worked really well was folding them inside the pancake but just dropping them to melt once 'flipped' was also good!

We made a lovely chocolate cake. This is my 'go to' recipe as its so easy & always a winner:

for the cake
200 grams plain flour
200 grams caster sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
40 grams best-quality cocoa powder
175 grams soft unsalted butter
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
150 ml sour cream

for the icing
75 grams unsalted butter
175 grams Cadburys Dairy Milk chocolate (broken into small pieces)
300 grams icing sugar
1 tablespoon golden syrup
125 ml sour cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat the oven to gas mark 4/180°C/350ºF and line and butter two 20cm / 8 inch sandwich tins with removable bases.
Now all you have to do is put all the cake ingredients - flour, sugar, baking powder and bicarb, cocoa, butter, eggs, vanilla and sour cream - into a food processor and process until you have a smooth, thick batter.
Divide this batter, into the prepared tins and bake until a cake tester, or a thin skewer, comes out clean, which should be about 35 minutes, but it is wise to start checking at 25.
Remove the cakes, in their tins, to a wire rack and let cool for 10 minutes
To make this icing, melt the butter and chocolate
While the chocolate and butter are cooling a little, sieve the icing sugar into another bowl.
Add the golden syrup to the cooled chocolate mixture, followed by the sour cream and vanilla and then when all this is combined whisk in the sieved icing sugar.
It should be liquid enough to coat easily, but thick enough not to drip off.

Spoon about a third of the icing on to the centre of the cake half and cover the top of it evenly. Sit the other cake on top, normal way up, pressing gently to sandwich the two together.
Spoon another third of the icing on to the top of the cake. Spread the sides of the cake with the remaining icing

Using one bag of Cadburys mixed chocolate buttons to decorate. Cut each button in half with a sharp knife and press into the ganache to create retro flowers. The different colour buttons give you lots of scope for creativity.

Tuck in!

Inspired by some chocolate lollies we made over Christmas we decided to make a mega chocolate pizza!!

Melt some dark chocolate, and then the buttons - all separately. Then spread the dark choc on a lined baking tray, followed by the milk and white chocolate. Swirl and decorate with leftover buttons. Easy and quick, and once set in the fridge, lasts about five minutes!!!

It's DD1s 6th birthday tomorrow so we decided to make 2x marble cakes (one for her birthday and one for her party), using cadburys own marble cake recipe - as we were making 2 cakes we trebled the ingredients to:
300g butter
300g self raising flour
300g caster sugar
3tsp baking powder
6 eggs
Plus we added a splash of milk, mixed it all together, split the mix in half then added 60g Cocoa powder instead of the 75g suggested in the original recipe, then spooned the white mix and then chocolate mix one spoonful at al time to fill the two cake tins then swirled with a knife and bakes at 180c for 30 mins.
The next day we iced them with some chocolate butter icing and some vanilla butter icing and decorated them with the buttons. My DDs (4&6yo) decorated them completely by themselves and had great fun doing so which gave me plenty of time to feed newborn DS. Our cakes are not as polished as the others but my DDs had so much fun making them (and sneakily eating the buttons while doing it) that it was a lovely afternoon activity. We are looking forward to eating the house cake tomorrow and the star cake at the weekend with DD1s friends.

Tonight's pudding - completed by my son, age 8, apart from cutting the banana.
Needed - banana, buttons, icing writing tube, squirty cream.
Cut the tiny banana ends off and cut two eye shapes from each end. Cut the rest of the banana in half length ways to get a mouth. Use the other half to create eyebrows. Eat any remaining pieces.
Make a face and use icing to stick buttons for eyes and teeth. Use squirty cream to make a beard. Eat and enjoy!

We made chocolate brownies with the buttons in as well as on top.

Recipe
170g butter
200g caster sugar
100g muscovado sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
100g cocoa powder
50g plain flour
100g chopped chocolate (we used buttons!)

Melt butter and set aside to cool.
Whisk together eggs and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
Whisk in melted butter and vanilla extract.
Sift in flour and cocoa powder.
Mix together with spatula - don't over mix.
Stir in chopped buttons.
Tip into 20cm square tin
Bake at 170c/325f/gas 3 for 20-25 minutes.

They were delicious, especially when eaten still warm and the button bits were all melty!

We made flowery chocolatey buttony cupcake thingies. Yum!

For the cupcakes:

100g self raising flour
100g caster sugar
100g margarine
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla essence
Half packet of Cadbury dairy milk mixed buttons roughly chopped

Cream butter and sugar together until fluffy then add eggs slowly and vanilla essence and beat well. Fold in flour and lastly the buttons. Divide between twelve cupcake cases and bake in oven for 15ish minutes at 180C until springy to touch.

For the buttercream:

Half a block of butter beaten with 1 tsp vanilla essence, enough icing sugar to taste good and a few drops of milk to make it easier to pipe.

Pipe icing onto cupcakes in a swirly pattern and decorate with more buttons, on end round silver sugar balls, to create flowers.

Gobble immediately (if you're my kids Grin)

We made edible teacups with ours!!

A fun activity that didn't take any actual cooking!

The cups were ice cream cones, sweetie handles glued on with melted buttons and then the buttons inside, on top of a marshmallow, to form our tiny edible hot chocolate drinks! A biscuit for a saucer and we were done!

Thanks Cadburys! Loved doing this!

Some of these are sooo pretty! We made Cadbury's Mixed Button Cookies, which tasted lovely but aren't going to win any beauty contests. However it was a really easy recipe for my five year old to do, and he had a great time.

150g soft brown sugar
150g butter
1 egg
dash of vanilla extract
1/2 tsp baking power
300g of flour
Two bags of mixed chocolate buttons (minus any eaten in the cooking process!)

Cream the butter and sugar together until fluffy and then beat in the egg and vanilla extract. Stir in the baking powder and half of the flour, mix in the chocolate buttons and then fold in the rest of the flour. Dollop on to a baking sheet, cook for 6-7 mins at gas mark 5 and then take out the oven and squash down. Return to the oven for a further 7-8 mins.

Eat hot or cold - these didn't last 24 hours in our house!

Used my tried and tested basic sponge recipe - 100g each of caster sugar, margarine and flour and 2 eggs.
Then we layered silicon cupcake cases with the buttons and added cake mix. Didn't look the prettiest but tasted gorgeous, and we decorated them as animals anyway, hedgehog, owl and cat in case you can't tell! 😆 Will have to add pics in another comment!

We (me plus DD1 (5) and DD2 (3)) had a lot of fun making these.....

For the marble cupcakes

4 large eggs
8oz self-raising flour
8oz stork margarine or butter
8oz white sugar
1 teaspoon of baking powder
For vanilla: 1 teaspoon of vanilla paste (or few drops of vanilla extract)
For chocolate: 2 tablespoons of cocoa

Buttercream Icing

5oz butter or margarine
10oz icing sugar
Dessertspoon of water
For vanilla: 1 teaspoon of vanilla paste (or few drops of vanilla extract)
For chocolate: 1 tablespoon of cocoa

Cakes

  1. Preheat oven to 160c.
  2. Combine all the ingredients (except for vanilla paste/cocoa) in one bowl and beat until smooth and fluffy (2 or 3 minutes).
  3. Put the mixture into 2 separate bowls. Beat the vanilla paste into the mixture in one of the bowls and the cocoa into the mixture in the other bowl.
  4. This recipe can be used when making a big cake or individual cupcakes.
  5. For large cupcakes, put a dessert spoonful of vanilla mixture in and a dessert spoonful of chocolate mixture in each paper cupcake case. Then use a cocktail stick or fork to swirl together to make a pretty pattern. Careful not to do this too much to avoid all the mixture combining.
  6. For mini cupcakes, do the same but use a teaspoon of each mixture. With this mixture, we made 12 large cupcakes and 10 mini ones.
  7. For large cupcakes, bake for around 8 – 10 minutes. To test if fully baked, insert a wooden skewer into the middle of the cupcake. If it comes out clean, it is fully cooked.
  8. For mini cupcakes, baking time is between 5 – 7 minutes.
  9. Leave to cool completely before icing. Once cool, cut of the mounds to make a smooth top ready for icing.

    Icing

  10. Combine the icing sugar, margarine and water and beat until smooth. I tend to use an electric hand whisk to get the best results.
  11. Put the mixture into 2 separate bowls. Beat the vanilla paste into the icing in one of the bowls and the cocoa into the icing in the other bowl.
  12. Cut the mound from the top of each cake to make a smooth top. Either pipe the icing onto the cakes or spread on thickly with a knife. We decorated half in each icing.

We then used the buttons to make woodland animals and flowers. White chocolate for the owls, dark chocolate for the hedgehogs and a mix for the flowers.

Our girls absolutely loved the fact that there were a mix in each packet and it was really good for creative decorations. They kept looking in the packet slightly confused because they couldn't understand why there were both colours - they were a hit, though.

We tried to decorate the cakes using only the buttons and icing which was a fun challenge - there were flying button bits when we cut out the noses....

I will post the pictures in a few posts as too many for one.

Loving the ideas so far, very creative people! (magicalwaysleadstotrouble I am stealing your teacup idea, they are so cute and easy!)

So, we made bugs from ours. DD (5) did most of it, I was just doing what I was told. Split the bag to white and milk buttons and melted them separately. Once melted, added a tablespoon on syrup to each and stirred till became a big blob (technical term!). Wrapped in greaseproof paper, then put in fridge for about an hour. Then just moulded it to bug shapes and decorated with some of the other colour.
DD had great fun making them and the other DC loved eating them!

DS (9) wants to play tic tac toe with the other bag, so long as he gets to eat them after each game!

wow some of these looks amazing well done :)

We made 2 things out of our buttons

Firstly we made courgette brownies:

Recipe:

1 medium courgette - topped and tailed and peeled and then grated finely
300g cocoa powder
200g plain flour
2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
125ml melted butter
2 tsp vanilla essence
200g caster sugar
3/4 bag of mixed buttons (it was going to be a whole bag but we had to taste as we went along!)

Preheat oven to gas mark 4

Prep a baking tin by greasing it and then sprinkle a bit of flour over it

Sift together flour, cocoa powder and bicarb into a bowl

Mix caster sugar, melted butter an vanilla essence in a separate bowl

Add the flour/cocoa/bicarb mix to the sugar mix and stir - it will go pretty dry and crumbly but thats okay. Once its pretty evenly stirred add in the courgette and most of the buttons (saving a couple of decoration) and mix well. The courgette will add in the extra moisture needed and it will become a bit more gloopy (yeah thats the technical term for it)

Spoon the mixture onto the baking tray and roughly smooth out using a spatula.

Bake at gas mark 4 for around 15 minutes - check by pressing lightly on the top - should spring back

I always cut whilst its in the pan and then remove individual pieces - leave to cool on cooling rack for about 30 mins.

For decoration - I slightly melted the buttons (using a teaspoon dipped in hot water and rubbed lightly on the back) and then placed on the brownies and voila all done :)
