Will I be able to get children perfomance in SATS YR1&6 by month of birth for the previous 5 years

If so where can get the information. From the school or LEA and how do I request the information?

I doubt the LEA would collect that information in that much detail. And the school wouldn't give it out (or at least shouldn't) becuase it would be too easy to identify individual children, thus breaching the Data Protection Act.

Maybe find out if someone has done some research into this and got a large sample fo anonymised data?

I can't see that the school would have necessarily prepared this info, so you couldn't ask under freedom of information, though might be worth a try. Of course if the school is say one form then they won't give it to you as it would probably leave you being able to identify specific children.

For a single school, that would identify individual children so I doubt you'll be able to get it. LEA might possibly be able to give you it, but only if they have that information reasonably easily in that detail - even under FOI you can't ask them to spend hours trawling through the data and cross-referencing it to give you that sort of analysis.

It is definitely collected by DOB but doubt it would be released for reasons others have cited. KS1 is not published so would not be made available in any form.

Isn't it Years 2 and 6? (Unless my child was so backward in Yr 1 last year that she didn't take them oops!).

It will not be the DOB just the months. In simple I need to compare how Summer born children compare with Autumn Children. So is it possible to request the past results according to the seasons the children were born ie Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer

Schools will not release this information. Is this for a research project? How large a sample do you need?

That sort of data is anaylsed by schools but they are unlikely to give it to you.

I once found some data on the internet on exactly that - performance in statutory tests by month of birth - and I didn't bookmark it. I've never been able to find it again and, indeed, it may have disappeared.

I know it showed data at KS1 for all levels, because I was interested in the gulf between September-born boys and August-born boys (I have 2 August boys). I do remember that something like 25% of September-born boys achieved Level 3 and only 5% of August-born boys. But I can't remember in which subjects, or whether it was one year's data or several.

So that's anecdotally interesting, but bugger all use to you in a proper report!

Thanks for the link. It is quite an interesting report to read but generalised as you have already mentioned. I would have liked to get a report for a specific school where my child goes as she was born in Summer but from what I have read here it looks like I am unlikely to get the information

BrownieMum - how large is your DD's school? Really, for a single school the data set would be to small to be very meaningful in terms of drawing conclusions, not much better than anecdotal really.

Would you like the data out of parental concern ie because you want to know how your daughter's getting on compared to age-peers or because you think her age isn't being taken into account in assessments etc?

I don't see why they shouldn't give you the information as long as individual children aren't named and it's blocked into Autumn, Winter and Summer Terms. I'm a governor and certainly that kind of information will be available.

Sounds a bit obvious, but why don't you ask her teacher? I just don't know how helpful this sort of data would be with regard to your daughter as an individual. Anecdotally, summer-borns are all over the place. Statistically, in large cohort studies there is is a measurable difference in their achievement, but applying that to your child may not be the most helpful way of measuring her progress.

That information isn't going to be available easily. You could try and chat to the school's assessment coordinator (usually a member of senior management) and there's a slim possibility the school itself uses a database that stores assessment information and can be searched by age and has for the past few years. It would take her/him time to extract the information for you but they may do it.
It may be end of Year levels from Y1 onwards as well as Y2 and Y6 SATS.

What LGP said - I don't see how the data is going to help you if you want to know your dd's 'position'. The teacher should be able to advise eg she is at/above/below national average for her age, and if her attainment likely to be affected by her DOB (quite likely in Y2, less so in Y6). How she's doing compared to average for school/class is less relevant and tbh not really helpful to know.

I think you are overanalysing it and that as LGP said summer born kids do relatively well/badly so as to even things out overall. I'd be surprised if the school has time to break down and review its data like this. What are you trying to show, that you dc is more "behind" or "further advanced" than the teacher believes ? How old is your dd?

I'm pretty confident our school has data analysed by virtually every single variable out there. I know when discussing Foundation Stage Profile results recently it was specifically mentioned that none of the summer-born children had achieved a certain point score in writing.

I do tend to agree with the others that it might not help you. I would find it interesting, too, though.

They probably do have the data Singersgirl, but unless it was a huge school there would be real confidentiality issues about making it available.

Our school has data analysed by virtually every single variable out there too! Generally by Year 3 the summer/autumn variable is tiny if at all.

We have analysed data but I very much doubt that we would release such detailed data to one parent when it relates to other children.
I think legally only Y2 & Y6 data is open to publication.
