Catholic schools will tend to be Catholic in their policy and outlook. Contraception (excluding Persona and rhythm method) is against church teaching. I have frequently heard abortion described as a sin but my experience is that contraception is either not spoken about much or lumped together with the compulsory elements of sex ed that the Science dpt teach.
I fear that if church teaching bothers you, you will be wanting to write more threads like this. Your choices would seem to be ... 1. get on with it or 2. move your child to another school or 3. have him/her removed from the RE elements of the curriculum. Number 3 isn't as drastic as number 2 but does tend to make the kids "outsiders". This option would not get you out of implicit church teaching just the overt RE curriculum. The other stuff will be deeply ingrained in the fabric of the school and it's staff. This is usually what parents want though so I don't really know how to best advise you. Hope this helps.

Dont know why you are surprised at this....this is just one of a number of Catholic beliefs...granted some priests/schools etc are less strict than others but this is one of the fundamentals.....why would you want to go to great lenghts to get your child a place at a particular school and then be horrified by what they are teaching them??

Personally I think all faith schools are divisive and probably shouldn't exist.

But I think that about private schools too and I send my children to one.

I've just read one of your other threads Seeker about staying and playing after school. You seem to be a governor at the school in that thread. Is this the Catholic school? (No particular reason for asking - just trying to understand a little bit about how you have been surprised by this).As a (presumably non - RC) governor of a RC school you are either an LEA gov or parent gov?

policywonk, I didn't think it was being dim to answer what I thought was an honest question honestly asked. I haven't been judgemental or tried to have an argument about the issue of Faith schools. Why does that make me dim?

If I wanted a debate about somthing then I feel it is better to be clear and say that statements like the one in the thread title wind me up and what do other people think.

Thanks to all who came to my rescue. I will go back to my usual role of saying "Don't worry. he/she is still very young - he she will learn to use a potty/sleep through the night/read/stay in his/her own bed/walk/do quantum physics/eat caviar/talk/insert cativity of choice when h/she is ready" and not try to be too clever for my own good.

Out if interest, do people realize that English is the only language which has an expression equivalent to "too clever for your own good"? Says something about out national psyche, doesn't it!
