How much do you pay each month for gas and electric?

Just been looking at all our outgoings as we seriously need to cut back somewhere! We are with e-on for gas and electric, and our monthly direct debit is £110. We live in a 4 bed detached house, although not a particularly large one. We are a family of 3, plus a dog. We use the tumble dryer A LOT as when I put the washing on the line, the fecking dog pulls it off!
Just wondered how our bill compares to other people's.

That sounds reasonable to me. I live in a two bed first floor flat (so get all my downstairs neighbour's heating!) we have no dishwasher or tumble dryer. We have a card meter so pay more than we would if we had a direct debit and on average probably spend about £80 month (taking winter into account)

I have a small 3 bed and pay £67 a month DD for gas and electric. I have the heating on non-stop from oct to march. Dishwasher, tumble dryer too.

I do ring my readings in so it's up to date and I don't get any nasty shocks.

I did find mine plumetted when I got a new fridge / freezer (old one was leaking cold air) and a new dishwasher and washing machine when mine died. The new 'A' rated appliances use far less electric than older ones. My old fridge / freezer was burning money, the bills came down by £20 a month when I got the new one!

We pay £130 for both which I will admit I use every bit of it! 3 bed semi, 5 of us plus dog. Dishwasher, tumble dryer which I use regularly. But today they came out to change our gas meter and have decided there is a major leak and have capped our supply. how can we have a major leak without every having smelt anything? And he swanned off just saying we need to get someone out. Not happy at the moment. Thank god it's not cold.

3 bed semi bungalow with dormer conversion. With another bedroom downstairs. 2 bathrooms. 2 adults and 4 children. We pay £228 per month combined gas and electric with n power. And they're putting their prices up in October I believe :( It's crippling isn't it?

Feeling about mine now. 4 bed detached. Electricity via Ecotricity who peg prices to E-on or someone similar. They've just put my DD up from £68 per month to £84. That's no heating, but some tumble drier use when it's v wet.

No gas, so pay c £1,800 a year for oil .

3 bedroom semi. Was £45 a month for gas and electric. I realised we hadn't had a gas bill for a long time so called and they said they only did them every 6 months now and we would get one in december. That would have been 9 months so i gave a reading and monthly amount now up to £69. I did think £45 was a bit too small. Will be wearing many jumpers etc in the winter though.

I remember when we were in our old house npower wanted to put it up from £150 to £250 a month. I told them thus was rubbish, they decided it could be £168, I changed supplier who charged £150 a month and when we moved we were in credit.

electric - £38 per month, swings and roundabouts but don't build up a big balance either way.
I use the dishwasher around every 2 days, hardly ever use the tumble drier any more, probably have the normal electronics around.

oil - about 2,000 litres a year, on current prices of around 55p that is £1,100 a year or £91 a month.
Heating & hot water only.

Two bedroom flat here - just me & DS. Use the tumble dryer lots, but am otherwise very careful. E.on have just notified me that they're putting my bill up from £26/month - £60/month. I'm in credit at the moment & I know that prices have gone up & winter is coming, but it seems like a huge leap?

Use the tumble dryer and dishwasher everyday but we're in a new(ish) build with underfloor heating and A rated appliances.

tiny 3 bed mid terrace, crappy council central heating, stuck with stupid metres that were here when we moved in. Electric averages about 20quid a week, 1000pounds a year, no tumble drier or dishwasher. Gas is A LOT, during the summer 15pounds or so for hot water and whatnot, during last winter it was 50-60quid a week, running heating no higher than 18. We are here all day, though and have an ancient patio door that sucks all the heat out, a bathroom window that doesn't close properly and really ill fitting outside doors

So combined over 2000pounds a year or well in excess of 10% of DH's gross salary.

Also with E-on. Been paying £109/month for a 3 bedroom semi until recently though I've just increased it voluntarily to £115/month (think it may need to go higher after the winter). In the freezing cold weather we leave the heating on constantly but the rest of the winter it is on for a couple of hours in the morning and 5 hours in the evening.

Goodness, some of you seem to be paying a lot - we have a five bedroom house (only 3 of us ) - dishwasher most days; I never use the tumble dryer. Pay £80 (total) per month. We are with British Gas if that helps anyone else.

3 bed terrace with DH, me and 2X DC we have just increased our direct debit to £100 per month for dual fuel with scottish power, we are on a fixed rate until june 2012 so that should see us through this winter.

We are in a 3 bed semi, 2 adults , 2 children (1 and 3), gas is on direct debit that they keep trying to reduce as in credit (errr yes it is the summer and don't want huge bills in the winter!!) - still paying £40 a month (they want it to be £30) but not in as much credit as this time last year so know that will need to go up. Electric we are stuck on a meter as the landlord says it has to stay - I always top it up to £60 at the begining of the month, so normally putting on between £45 and 55 a month, so just under £100 total for both...

I was paying £145 combined with British gas. ust changed to Energry smart so I will only pay for what I use each month. Bigger bills in winter, smaller ones in summer - suits me !

Stupid ye olde back boiler from 1950s, which eats gas (lovely hot water though). Only front of house double glazed (saving up for rest).
We pay £107/month.

Dishwasher on daily. Washing machine on most days, tumbler on between 0 and 7 times a week depending on weather.

I don't leave things on standby but computer is on for about 6 hours a day, and we have a big American style fridge freezer as well as one other fridge and one other freezer. Gas cooker, gas central heating and hot water.

We pay 120 pounds a month for gas and electric, just had bills and are 90 pounds in credit for the electric and 9 pounds in credit for the gas so that will balance out over the winter.

Hi guys,

For those of you with E.ON there is a few things you can do to help reduce your usage and keep your accounts accurate.

Make sure you input your own meter readings, if you have an online account you can also request an up to date bill whenever you like.

Also, if you have an online account you can request an energy fit monitor, this will monitor your electricity usage and show you how much your appliances cost when you are using them.

Check out the interactive house on the website, this is very useful and ask for a booklet called 100 ways to save energy.

One poster mentioned us increasing the Direct Debit, have you asked why? is the account billed up to accurate reads? you should be building up some credit by now to help see you through the winter months.

£105 with Atlantic Energy but changed about three months ago and I think it will be reduced down (they are currently matching what I paid for Scottish Power). Currently hugely in credit so think the next bill will lead to a monthly reduction.

2 bed end of terrace Victorian house with large garden room and underfloor heating- one wall is floor to high ceiling (10 feet) glass which probably doesn't help with heating, plus two other reception rooms. Dishwasher every day, washing machine every day, tumble dryer rarely. Old combi boiler which isn't very efficient and I'm sure makes a difference as we have showers and baths every day. Also I like to be warm so thermostat is at 20C during the summer and 22-23C during the winter.

We pay similar - in credit on electricity and debit on gas so will probably need to adjust at next review.
