Does anyone know when we will know by? I know this week is too soon, but will they let us know next week? It is for planning purposes.

Also, does anyone know how likely it is that lockdown will end when they say? I'm havent heard much myself. Thanks

I believe they said they need to see what the figures are like this weekend before making any decisions so I expect it will be towards the end of next week.

I heard something will be said next Monday about moving back into different tiers. We were in tier 1 but looking at the local cases, I think we will be tier 2.

It won't ... parliament has already said they will vote against it

Given the government usually makes decisions so calmly and never changes their mind at the last minute....!

I'm working in n the basis it'll be extended. Then I won't be caught out.

According to the radio and my newspaper this morning, we will be allowed five days of fun over Christmas and then we will be in lockdown through January.

I don’t think there’s anyway we can predict what will happen. Not long ago we were told categorically the wouldn’t be another whole country lockdown, but here we are.

Another national one ? I don't watch the news anymore

If that is true about Christmas the government is pathetic. How have they let everything get so out of control again Angry

Report

The Christmas thing is a ridiculous idea. I don't want 5 days off over Christmas and then have to pay for it with another month of lockdown.

I really can't see non essential shops staying closed throughout December. Then again I'm surprised the choice was made to close them now. Everywhere is packed at this time of year normally so I can't imagine what December will bring. I think a lot more people will opt for all or mostly online shopping.

I don't want five days of doing whatever we want either and nothing either side to pay for it. Many will be in the shops within days and children back at school a week later, we'll be back to square one. Much prefer to be allowed to see the odd person/couple outside on the run up and being able to do that after.

They have to do it that way because they will massively lose face when every single family breaks the tiles over Christmas

I think it’s ridiculous too and even if they say we can do what we want, we’ll be avoiding our oldies for one Christmas

Thanks all. It is mainly this one I'm wondering about for now. I hope we know early next week. I need to plan but obviously I understand why they can't say just yet!

I don't want 5 days off for xmas then a month lockdown.
I cant do this anymore. I went to b&m yesterday for a walk round because I had to get out. I know I shouldn't of but I needed it.

I also dont want 5 days at Christmas. We will end up paying for it later. Weve almost 30 cases at my school, I've lost another class today to a positive case ( 4 in classes I've taught since September). I cant see how relaxing the rules will improve the situation in schools and generally.

I agree I don't agree with this save Christmas shit

Absolutely ridiculous. Who is even following the rules anymore. Stay at home, but go to work. Stay at home but go click and collect. Traffic on the roads is normal. The thing is the government realise that people will decide for themselves what they want to do for Christmas. Except of course for those still scared.

We are going to have a lockdown in Jan/Feb anyway...............
a. to save Cheltenham 2021
b. Brexit.

This lockdown will end as was promised and then we will go into different Tiers but it looks like the government is going to change the current tier system so you will be out of lockdown but your local tier could be nearly as strict.
I would expect Boris to make all announcements on Monday 30th, but of course they haven’t found the chatty rat yet so could have another leak earlier.

Report
Hugosmugo · 20/11/2020 08:35

Okay thank you. I think I will be put in a high tier so I guess that may mean I won't be able to travel. Damn.

The government would need a majority in parliament to extend the lockdown, and I think a lot of Tory MPs would be willing to rebel. The new lockdown sceptic Tory MP group has over seventy members IIRC, and they reckon at least thirty more would refuse to vote for another lockdown. Boris only got the last one through by pretty much promising this one wouldn't be extended. Yes he could get an extension through on Labour votes even if half his party rebels, but it would finish him with his own party. And I wonder if Rishi would accept another lockdown?

Bloody hope not! I have not seen my parents since August and am planning on a trip January. Was due to go next week, but...

I think proposals to relax the rules at Christmas are really just being put out because the Government knows people will break the rules anyway. Governments like to appear in control of things, even when they're not, so its more palatable to accept the fait accompli of Christmas mixing than to be embarassed by real mass disobedience.
