Does anyone know when we will know by? I know this week is too soon, but will they let us know next week? It is for planning purposes.

Also, does anyone know how likely it is that lockdown will end when they say? I'm havent heard much myself. Thanks

The thing is, we can't 'pay for it' in January, because you can't UNDEAD people

I think it's 'rock & hard place' though. Unfortunately a lot of people will mix over Christmas, whatever the rules are, so they'll be searching for a solution which makes them look good, which people will mostly stick to, but does the least damage.

& there isn't an obvious answer.

@Hugosmugo. I live alone too & I've cancelled my long standing Christmas plans and will be spending CD on my own. I don't mind. I hope you can find a way to have a nice day.

@slipperywhensparticus

Police is mostly by consent in this country they dont have the manpower to keep us all indoors so im not surprised by them easing restrictions for Christmas but the cynical me is thinking...boris is putting more money into the military there are no "wars" around why is he doing this

I think I've heard it all now.

It's certainly not to station one guard on every door.

Apart from the fact that it's just a ludicrous thought & not at all Boris/Tory 'style'... do you have any idea how long it would take to get a shed load of soldiers recruited & trained?

Have a wee look at the cuts that have been made in previous years & look around globally then you'll be far less surprised he's putting money into the military....

I think the Christmas thing is complex to be honest. I don't want another lockdown either but they need to allow something.. it is ok for families who live together (I.e. parents and kids) but im an adult who doesn't live near family and I have no partner and no children. The thought of not being with at least my parents at Christmas is really rubbish.

@Pellewsmate don't worry! It is really confusing. Shops will be manic though in December no matter when things ease!

Yes I have been thinking the same.

I don't want five days of celebration at the cost of another lockdown, increased cases, lives and jobs Just been speaking to my DD, she says the same. She's rather see the odd friend or even one of her cousins over coffee when she wants over time not within a five day period.

Really surprised that no one is mentioning the stupidity of lifting lockdown on the first Saturday in December.

That's probably because its a Thursday not a Saturday.

Really surprised that no one is mentioning the stupidity of lifting lockdown on the first Saturday in December. Surely it would make sense to extend for a few of days so that lockdown is lifted on a Monday - Wednesday to stop many idiots using it as an excuse to get in the festive spirit.

I don’t want a lockdown in January as it’s my birthday.

Also re lockdown in January...again Boris would have to get it past an increasingly sceptical party AND the chancellor who has to pay for it all. In a way there's a Catch 22 for the people who will argue for a third lockdown in January....if a month's lockdown is genuinely effective, another one won't be needed in January. If a month's lockdown is so ineffective that we ARE seen to need another one in January, than we're looking at a fourth bloody lockdown in March or whenever and then it really is just unsustainable and unaffordable and compliance will fall off a cliff. So January might happen but I wouldn't bet on it or eat myself up worrying about it personally?

I’m wondering about what they do about the CEV after 2nd Dec. The letter I got said that they’d write again before this Lockdown ends. It will probably tell us to stay put.

I think proposals to relax the rules at Christmas are really just being put out because the Government knows people will break the rules anyway. Governments like to appear in control of things, even when they're not, so its more palatable to accept the fait accompli of Christmas mixing than to be embarassed by real mass disobedience.

@mdh2020

According to the radio and my newspaper this morning, we will be allowed five days of fun over Christmas and then we will be in lockdown through January.

Bloody hope not! I have not seen my parents since August and am planning on a trip January. Was due to go next week, but...

The government would need a majority in parliament to extend the lockdown, and I think a lot of Tory MPs would be willing to rebel. The new lockdown sceptic Tory MP group has over seventy members IIRC, and they reckon at least thirty more would refuse to vote for another lockdown. Boris only got the last one through by pretty much promising this one wouldn't be extended. Yes he could get an extension through on Labour votes even if half his party rebels, but it would finish him with his own party. And I wonder if Rishi would accept another lockdown?

Okay thank you. I think I will be put in a high tier so I guess that may mean I won't be able to travel. Damn.

This lockdown will end as was promised and then we will go into different Tiers but it looks like the government is going to change the current tier system so you will be out of lockdown but your local tier could be nearly as strict.
I would expect Boris to make all announcements on Monday 30th, but of course they haven’t found the chatty rat yet so could have another leak earlier.

Absolutely ridiculous. Who is even following the rules anymore. Stay at home, but go to work. Stay at home but go click and collect. Traffic on the roads is normal. The thing is the government realise that people will decide for themselves what they want to do for Christmas. Except of course for those still scared.

@Waxonwaxoff0

The Christmas thing is a ridiculous idea. I don't want 5 days off over Christmas and then have to pay for it with another month of lockdown.

I agree I don't agree with this save Christmas shit

flumposie · 19/11/2020 12:59

I also dont want 5 days at Christmas. We will end up paying for it later. Weve almost 30 cases at my school, I've lost another class today to a positive case ( 4 in classes I've taught since September). I cant see how relaxing the rules will improve the situation in schools and generally.

Hopefully they will vote against extending the lockdown.
