Those of you whose waters broke naturally where and how did it happen?

Hi with ds my waters broke at hospital by the midwife, but for those of you that have had waters break naturally where were you, how did it happen, was there any warning before it happened and did you have contractions before the waters broke? Sorry for all the questions but am 39 weeks with dd and have started to wonder when the end will come!

While eating breakfast. No real warning, but obviously some intuition, as I was sitting on an old towel.

I was shockingly overdue, but was the first day I'd ever really seriously considered that i might go into labour

With DS1, I don't remember them breaking, don't even know if the MW did it, or if they went naturally.

DS2, I was in hospital for pre-eclampsia, I was being induced, I had the gel at around 2 in the afternoon, nothing much happened, couldn't sleep that night, so was up at 1am bouncing on the birthing ball, still nothing happened so got into bed, about 2am I felt what I thought was a really big kick, it hurt a lot bit, and I had about 5 contractions one on top of the other all at once. Took me a little while to realise what was going on, went to move off the bed to get the MW, and my waters just leaked everywhere, the big 'kick' was actually a big pop!

Woke up at 1.30 in the morning to go to loo, stood up and wham, waters breaking. Contractions started in earnest about an hour later.

No signs before hand, inluding no contractions.

With dd, I was asleep in bed.

With ds, I had just got up from the loo and had to sit down again very quickly!

DS2, waters broke in the car on the way to hospital. I was having very strong contractions very close together and we nearly didn't make it to the hospital in time.

The feeling is shocking, a bit like trying to hold a water balloon inside your fanjo without letting it go. When it popped it just gushed out, luckily we'd put a folded blanket over the car seat .

Ah yes, an elastic band snapping is the feeling when the waters go.

When out shopping,it was the day before the new school term and everywhere was heaving ,huge queues for the loo so just had to waddle dripping to the car!

At home - 2 days before due date - just got up to answer the phone and ...ping Contractions started about 3 hours later. No real warning although I had felt groggy and headachey all day and hadn't been able to sleep much the night before...

At home on the couch watching tv, I'd just had a curry! I was 10 days early. Good job the couch is leather No contractions before hand but had had the show about 3 days before.

I was sitting on the sofa watching a film and eating chilli. I dropped some rice on the floor and bent forwards to pick it up from between my feet, thereby putting quite a bit of pressure on the bump I suppose. They popped then and contractions started half an hour later. In hindsight I think they weren't ready and I shouldn't have leant forwards like that. DD dropped the wrong way into the birth canal with the gush of waters.

DD1 - on the sofa more of a trickle really

DD2 - MW had to break them at 10cms

DD3 - in bed the whoosh woke me up, DD3 born on same bed 95 minutes later.

So if I have been feeling really full all day like I have eaten a huge meal and my back has been aching since first thing this morning and I am peeing constantly could this be the start of labour? Would love a gush of water so I am sure as really don't want to leave ds at home with gp until I have to. No contractions just a cross between constant period pain and feeling full up!

While I was bent over the dryer ,I thought I has wet myself because with my previous babies I had ARM.

I just changed my knickers and put a pad on and carried on as normal it was only the next day after contractions started that the MW told me my waters had gone .

With dd1 they broke 10 minutes after I had fallen asleep in my bed, with the first stabbing contraction.

With dd2 they didn't break until she was born.

Mine went naturally, but not until I was 10cm. They gushed all over the floor of the delivery room and all over the poor MW. [evil]

Whilst pushing DS out, MW was just about to break them for me and 'pop', out they gushed all over her... DS born about 10 mins later.

YumeeMumee · 18/08/2008 15:50

Had just got out of bed but it was only a trickle - got in the shower and didn't stop trickling! Then had a show. I never had the 'pop' and gush....it just kept trickling and noone told me that it doesn't stop [for a while anyway!]
This happenend on my due date but contractions didn't start until that evening and it didn't really progress so ended up being induced.

i was nearly swept away. It was like a scene from hawaii 5-o. That shows my age sadly

dd1 cs

ds1 - 6am as i got out of bed for a wee (missed mattress protector )

dd2 - 6 am as i got out of bed for a wee (was faster this time and made it the two strides into the bathroom to leak on the moppable floor)

both times my contractions started straight away (i assume that i had been 'warming up' for a while whilst asleep, but the contractions hadn't woken me)

ds1 born 24 hours later (horrible, nasty, veterinary, back to back labour)

dd2 born at 4 that afternoon (the less said about that the better)

how exciting to be so close! good luck!

First two births, the MW's had to break them during labour.
My third, they went naturally and I must have been 10cm dilated as it was a very quick labour and birth. I was laying on the bed at the time.
Thank god for pampers bed mats
