herbal hair dye and breast milk

I used a herbal hair colour last night for the first time since i got pregnant. Still breastfeeding ds, now 2.4. I thought as it was totally herbal, a german product, Logona, it would be ok for breastfeeding, now thinking about how herbs can have a strong effect too wondering if it is really ok. Anyone know or used anything like this when breastfeeding? Just wondering if i should express for a day and not breastfeed, or whether i am being silly.

hi ruty - i have used herbal dyes for highlighting (italian and spanish) a couple of times - once in a saloon (it cost me a bomb !) and once at home.

i was worried like you (ds is 2.8 yo and still bf 3 - 4 times a day) but came to conclusion very little gets into bm as does not contain all the very harmful stuff normal dyes contain. i have also recently switched to organic make-up and moisterisers.

i wouldn't dare use the normal hair dyes due to ammonia which is bad for both mum and baby and gets into blood stream very fast and ruins your scalp (also has been linked to cancers in people who are exposed to it often - i.e hairdressers!!)

thanks yellowrose. I had absolutely terrible nightmares last night and thought it must be the herbs! then wondered if any had really got into my blood stream...i am a bit neurotic so difficult to tell when i am worrying about something worth worrying about.

ruty - you sound just like me ! it's good being a bit paranoid though. i have become a bit of an eco warrior and switched to organic food and household cleaning stuff only since ds was born. before i knew nothing about chemicals and was totally passive.

yes shudder to think what kind of chemicals i used to use!

so ruty - what did you do with your hair ? what colour and what style ?

i am going a bit grey around the temple area (i will turn 39 in a week or so....gulp !!) so did highlights to cover a bit, don't know what to do when i am completly grey though - may consider wearing a wig !!

i am lucky i have good skin, not considering a face life just yet

I'm 35 yellowrose but a large number of white hairs seem to have sprouted in the last few months! Much thicker and curlier than my 'own' hair. I suppose i should think myself lucky as my mum went completely white at about thirty!
I tried to get a general brown colour to cover the white hair but it hasn't really worked that well - i think i may just have to resign myself to aging gracefully...

yeh i know what you mean about ageing gracefully...

i found the herbal dyes aren't as "strong" as normal dyes probably due to lack of ammonia, so yes agree they don't work quite as well as normal dyes and wash out much quicker.

i am defo. considering a wig or large hat when i turn 50

oh, i now wear shades more often than i used to on sunny days 'cos i don't have time to put my make up on with ds running around and wanting to go to the park in a hurry ! always a good disguise !

i find a bit of concealer under the eyes and some lipstick do wonders too

shades are great aren't they? tiniest hint of sun and they're on.
Now where to find a stylish hat...[alternatively i could just shave my head]
