Philip - what's wrong with it?

Seriously, I'd like to know!

I had really quite liked Philip for a boy...but it was rather negatively received on MN.

I wouldn't want my potential DS to suffer from an awful name but it might be a shame to miss out on a good traditional name that's not too popular at the moment.

I know someone with a 3 year old Phillip. I can't put my finger on why, but it always sounds strange. Maybe I see it as a name of my generation (70's)?

I think it's like a lot of names - nothing special, just a bit boring. Nothing really wrong with it apart from that. Just think of all the "Philips" you know - Schofield/Glenister/Fern's hubby. Middle-aged kind of name

Nothing wrong with it at all.

There are only 6 names or so that are 'safe' on mumsnet (and even then you'll get a couple of dissenters saying they are too popular) so unless you want to call your child: Millie, Tilly, Ellie, James, Ben or Ethan then don't worry about it

it's probably because it reminds a lot of us of Philips we Have Known.

In about 30 years when our children have never even laid eyes on a Philip, let alone snogged one, it'll be interesting and cool again

Dd has a lovely little friend called Philip. His nickname is indeed Pip.
I love it - not outlandish or made-up, but he is the only Philip in a school of 600 children!

Go for it, I think it is a great name!

I like Philip too, but DH wouldn't have it as it is his dads name. Could also use 'lip' when a teenager a la Shameless!

Well my 6 year old son is called Philip so I am clearly biased!!!

It suits him; he has never been called Pip (never thought of it!) but is starting to be 'Phil' to his friends.

We used to call him 'Philly' - despite the cheese - but never in front of his friends as it really is a bit babyish

I have met a few other children with the name but not many.
