One of the names on our list. I really love it but I don't really like Becky sad If we were to use Rebecca (I don't even know if I'm having a boy or a girl yet) is Becky inevitable?

MrsMattie Mon 15-Sep-08 18:43:21

I feel the same as you. Rebecca is a lovely, classic name, but Becky/Bex/Beck - hate them. Wouldn't use it for this reason, as I think it's one of those names that will inevitably be shortened.

fryalot Mon 15-Sep-08 18:43:33

I would say she is very likely to get Becky or Bex.

or The Becster
or Beccadoodle

(or maybe that's just us wink)

TheFallenMadonna Mon 15-Sep-08 18:44:17

It is not inevitable wink

McDreamy Mon 15-Sep-08 18:44:26

Thought as much and for that reason and that reason alone I think it will fall off our list sad

SquiffyHock Mon 15-Sep-08 18:45:53

I'm Rebecca and I've never been a Becky - I think you either are or you aren't. My parents were successful in never calling me anything but Rebecca throughout school, at university I became Bec/Bex but now I get a mix of all three.

I have to say that I really like my name, I think that it's one of those 'take you anywhere' names, quite classless (I mean that in a good way) and despite the fact it was in the top ten for years, I've only ever known a couple of other Rebeccas.

llareggub Mon 15-Sep-08 18:45:59

I know a Rebecca who gets called Reb by one group of friends and Becca by another. She always always calls herself Rebecca, and doesn't answer to Becky, ever.

Her parents call her Rebecks.

Janni Mon 15-Sep-08 18:46:31

I love this name. You can't really control what her friends call her and in a way, it's nice for friends to have pet names for each other. YOU can call her Rebecca all her life!

SquiffyHock Mon 15-Sep-08 18:47:45

Adding to that, at some point every name will be shortened or lengthened by someone - My friend's DD is Ava and she was horrified when someone at her school called her Aves!!

worzella Mon 15-Sep-08 18:47:54

I like Rebekah

flubdub Mon 15-Sep-08 18:48:34

Im called Rebecca grin
HATE Becky (have had bad experiences with them !) smile

MrsBadger Mon 15-Sep-08 18:48:46

ditto FallenMadonna and SquiffyHock - Becky is not inevitable. I know a Reb and an Ebby.

SquiffyHock Mon 15-Sep-08 18:49:03

Dad did call me Beckykins when I was little and more so when I was a teenager and he wanted to show me up!!

flubdub Mon 15-Sep-08 18:50:31

Btw, Iv NEVER been called becky, ever. Not more than once. Its not inevitable.
In fact, I went to primary, and high school with another Rebecca. We are still friends now.
Shes Rebecca, not becky.

wotulookinat Mon 15-Sep-08 18:52:08

Rebecca is a lovely name.

flubdub Mon 15-Sep-08 18:52:13

llaregubb Do you know me???
Thats exactly me! My mums called me that for as long as I can remember!

McDreamy Mon 15-Sep-08 18:53:23

Thanks for your messages maybe we'll keep it for a bit longer. I really like it. What did you/do you do if people call Rebecca Becky - correct them? Ignore them?

flubdub Mon 15-Sep-08 18:56:34

People dont now tbh.
If anyone said it when I was little, my mum would say, "Its Rebecca."
People arnt offended. Its not rude.
If they said it now, (Im 22) Id just ignore it. It would be someone who'd never met me before, and didnt know me, and probably wouldnt see me again.

flubdub Mon 15-Sep-08 18:57:29

Oh, when I said "they wouldnt see me again." I didnt mean because they'd called me Becky grin

KristinaM Mon 15-Sep-08 18:57:35

if soemone else calls your child becky and the child is young then you say nicely " its rebecca actually"

if child is older and doesnt mind being called becky you leave it

if child is older and DOES mind it you train her to say politely " i prefer to be called rebecca"

you need to accept that once she is at school she will use whatever name/nickname she likes

BTW lovely name

KristinaM Mon 15-Sep-08 18:58:11

sorry x posted

McDreamy Mon 15-Sep-08 19:01:06

An alternative we have (more DHs choice) is Abigail which I quite like, ironically it's Abby I prefer!!!!

flubdub Mon 15-Sep-08 19:01:24

Thanks! grin

Heres a question, Iv always wondered, when you hear the name Rebecca, what kind of name do you think it is?
Is it an old, conservative name like Victoria?

Its just that as its my name, I dont see it for what other people do. Does that make sense?

CountessDracula Mon 15-Sep-08 19:01:30

My cousinish type person is rebecca and she is called Becca

squeaver Mon 15-Sep-08 19:01:54

I think Rebecca and Becky are both lovely names. Do people think Becky is a bit chavvy or something?
