Yes it is. Not sure if you’re looking for more suggestions but Bryn, Ellis, Evan, Glyn, Gwyn, Idris, Ivor, Morgan, Owen and Rhys could work?

Is Bryn an actual Welsh name?

It's a lovely sounding word, but isn't it the Welsh for hill, and a word that has been adopted by the English as a "Welsh" name in recent years?

Or did I imagine that?!

Ok great yes up for other suggestions. We have a DS already so his name is already mentioned.

I strangely like Gwilym but we are far from Wales and I get some weird looks when I say my current DS' name already.

I'm not keen on Cai as have a couple of friends already with sons with the name (but I didn't realise it was WelshI

Quite like Elis but is this a girls name now ?

The only Wyn I know is Welsh, living in England. The nicest guy you could meet :)

Ianto
Dafydd - daf for short
Macsen - Macs for short
I've always loved Gruff too.

I don't like Wyn personally, although I can't put my finger on why - bit old mannish maybe? Although I do know a baby Wyn.

Aunt those are proper Welsh names everyone here would calling him Ian toe rather than 'yanto' around here.

I like Dewi a lot, but my DH doesn't like it. He says the name was a character on an American comedy about a kid. I don't know which one.

Socks that's good to know ! I don't know why, but I feel like having one son with a short name means I have to give the next one a short name too. Maybe I'm over thinking this?!

I know a Welsh Wyn in England. Owen & Rhys are other Welsh names which seem quite common in England.

Elis is definitely a boy name. What about Harri or Tomos?

Report
CeriBerry · 12/10/2017 01:00

Bryn is definitely a real Welsh name and not just a Welsh word adopted as a name by the English. Definitely a name

Bryn was my bamp's name - proper Welsh!

I'd avoid Dewi if you're in England. It seems like it'd be easy to pronounce, and yet when I knew a Dewi in uni I didn't hear a single English person pronounce his name correctly.

dontflame is you DH thinking of one of Donald Duck's nephews, Huey, Dewey and Louie?

Dewi is pronounced de (as in 'den') - wee, with the emphasis on the de part, not like Dewey, which is of course dew (the drops on grass) - ee.

Although English speakers are quite capable of saying De - wee, I bet most wouldn't.

Why are you looking for a welsh name if you aren't welsh and don't live in Wales?!

OP, Dewi was the little brother in Malcom in the Middle!
