Unless, of course, they're trying. Otherwise why would you?

Some are TTC. Some have lost children/pregnancies. Some are looking after children eg childminders, grandparents, stepparents.

Some have just found us and think we're a nice bunch of people to chat to!

I must admit, this has crossed my mind. I just presumed they were passing on the life experiences they feel might help someone. Why do you think they post?

because actually there are hundreds of threads not related to parenting in the slightest, that people may wish to contribute to. Including this one!

Hadn't thought of losing children. I have no idea why they post, probably should have put this in chat as it's not a problem just a curiosity.

For various reasons.

They could be

Nursery workers
Childminders
Nannies
Aunties
Uncles
Friends of parents

etc etc!

I don't have kids.

But I have found that of all the forums out there, MN is the closest to what I'm looking for in terms of the age, gender and general attitude, tone and humour of posters.

I'm ttc but even if I wasn't I'd still come here. I never post on parenting issues anyway, unless I have experience as an auntie or 'ex child' which of course we all are.

Most of the stuff here isn't about parenting anyway, and much of the stuff that is is actually about families etc, and we're all part of one of them.

So, YABU.

I like it that non-parents come on here - I think it means that even as mothers people with real and interesting social lives still want to talk to us

Plus of course, we get to indoctrinate some future mothers with judgey appropriate opinions on parenting.

MN's a community, isn't it?

most of those who don;t have children are either TTC or work with children so have an interest anyway.

I can't see why it would be a problem for anyone

No problem for me, I was just curious

Hi Reality.

A MumInScotland said it first:
"Some have just found us and think we're a nice bunch of people to chat to!"

Would you prefer we didn't talk to you, starwhores?

Not at all TrillianAstra, I asked the question and got some informative answers. AIBU was a stupid place to post.

I am a mum but that's not why I'm here. I find the threads hilarious, tragic and thought-provoking. Sometimes all three at the same time. (Sometimes dull and incomprehensible, but least said etc.). I'm pretty sure they'd strike me the same way had I never given birth.

One of the most enjoyable threads recently (megapram in tiny communal hall) was started by an OP who had no DCs and wanted to know if that was why she felt how she did, would she feel differently about this scenario if she did have DCs. MN would be the pooorer without the non-parents IMHO.

I first found Mumsnet after a miscarriage - I was just randomly googling and looking for answers - so for a while I was on MN and childless and not TTC either. True, it was child-related but I'm sure lots of people find MN quite randomly, like it, and it is a better place for it.

I don't have an issue with it.

The only one that bothered me came on to tell people having children was bad for the planet- horses bolted and all that?

generally all welcome though

I recommended MN to two people I know, one who is unable to have kids and is hoping to adopt and one who loves kids and will hopefully have them in the future.

I don't think I really need to explain why I thought it was good place for them to come.

because there's very few other places with such funny threads (like the breast/leg chicken controversy one). I could pretend that I'm here to find out more about children (I have nephews and nieces), but it's mostly for the funny threads.

I found MN while trying to find information relating to looking after DP's toddler. I very quickly got hooked because there are so many interesting and seriously entertaining people posting on here. I am generally more of a lurker than a poster but there are certain posters who I love to see as they have huge amounts of wisdom and/or are really really funny. I have totally PMSL on a number or occasions and more often than not should be doing something else when I'm avidly reading mumsnet.

All in all, I totally heart mumsnet

I like the non-parents posting, it reminds me how the rest of the world views people with small children. You can forget how mad it seems from the outside. and it reminds me of my old self.
