AIBU?

To just not be able to believe it

Okay so maybe I had too much wine.
But I'm sitting here thinking I can't believe that me, and all the people I know, my family, the people I love and also just everyone around the world, all those lives that exist and everybody's individual quests... One day none of us who exist right now will exist. All our big feelings and hopes, and all these different bright personalities... We will just disappear, like none of us ever really mattered.

I just cant get my head around it. It seems so unfair.
I'm also listening to this song which is really upping the emotion: m.youtube.com/watch?feature=share&v=LESFuoW-T7I

I know. All of us. Every single one. Nobody who is currently over 20 is likely to see the next century.

Balls.

Oh OP! It's only 830 😂 if you've drunk that much wine to be this maudlin at this early hour, definitely put the glass bottle down now!

These are big existential questions, for sure, but probably best not to think of them on a Friday night.

Am I the only one who feels like 80s music somehow captures the epic emptiness of it all? I cant explain what I mean but theres something about these 80s songs that feels really kind of eternal. Theres got to be a scientific reason for it!

It’s probably the echoes in the synth.

Every single item in your home, every previous or mundane item you've ever owned will end up in landfill or burnt and released into the atmosphere.

X every single household on entire planet.

Blows my mind.

It's true that alcohol plays it's part. But dont you think it's interesting that alcohol is linked to people getting maudlin? This maudlin aspect that lies dormant in us... Its like humans might be born with this sad awareness and then we pile on the goals and plans to distract us from the ticking clock

I think you're spot on, thanks for pinpointing it. It must be the echoes. But what is it exactly about the echoes that creates that kind of nostalgic feeling?

I think echoes just do that. They remind you of time.

I've had a G&T and a couple of modest glasses of white wine ... and it's just not enough.

I try not to think like this as it makes my head explode. Deep breaths and here and now.

I really like how you phrased that. Yes, maybe it's because echoes have no discernible end. Or maybe it subconsciously reminds us of the womb

So our planet is suspended in the solar system, and the solar system is in the universe, and the universe is in the galaxy and the galaxy is in the ..... etc forever.

I've not had any wine.

We all get recycled. Every part of us has been here before, and every part of us will be here again. Even if we manage to wipe ourselves out as a species, we'll come back as ants or amoebas or something. It's all good. Well, until the inevitable heat-death of the universe, anyway Smile

@MajesticWhine
I've had two glasses of red wine and a Heineken. Granted, on an empty stomach.

Does anyone have any more sweeping heart twinging 80s songs?

Try not to think about it too much.

Btw this lunch time I told my children what my grandmother told me about the general strike of 1926. Her father reprimanded her for taking free food that she queued up to receive when her father was not on strike. Taking food from the mouths in most need. My grandmother was made to sit and eat her own meal and then the free meal she had taken and wasn’t allowed to leave the table until she’d eaten the lot.

I realised I was Telling my children the lesson their great-great grandfather Had told their great grandmother. So it maybe true that your own personal dreams and feelings will no longer exist, it’s possible your memory will live on.

Likewise my father has all his father’s letters he wrote to his mother during WW2. They are so moving and lovely they will no doubt be kept and copied for future generations of our family to read and cherish.

But.. (Stone-cold sober) If I do think too hard about how short life is and how quickly 37 years have passed and therefore how soon I am to not existing, it does depress the crap out of me. SO I try not to dwell on it too much...

@Fucket
That reminds me of a quote from someone famous, I cant remember who. They said "I don't die when I die. I die when there is nobody left on the earth who remembers my memory".
Or something to that effect.
That's what you're saying too.

The song Lean On Me is a good one especially the bit saying 'can we have a say' resonates with me for some reason.
Wine and then beer is bad though, never mix the grape and the grain as my Nan used to say!
