AIBU?

Mayo left out overnight keep or throw away?

SunshineOverStress · 22/05/2020 13:29

So the mayo was left out overnight, a brand new bottle which had been used once! It’s been warm out and I’ve only just noticed it, is it safe to keep or does it need to be thrown?!

Throw it away!

It'll be fine. I assume you mean a bog standard shop bought mayo?

Rule of thumb with food: if in doubt, don’t.

As mayo is stored in the cupboard for ages before opening I wouldn't worry.

I'd just put it back in the fridge and keep it

Yeah we don't keep mayo in the fridge anyway so I'd keep it 🤷🏼‍♀️

Does it contain egg, or is it just oil?

I'd keep it. This happens in our house more than I care to reveal and it's always fine Grin

Listeria - throw away!

I'd throw it away if it was homemade. If it's shop bought I'd stick it in the grid and think no more of it.

Of course don't throw it away! Just stick it back in the fridge.

The grid? The fridge.

It's fine! Unless it's homemade? If it's bought ot's completely processed, one night at room temp wouldn't make a bit of difference.

I'd definitely keep it.

If it’s shop bought mayo it probably has a fair few preservatives and what have yous stuffed in there - it’s not just egg yolks and oil. Unless it smells dodgy then I’d keep it. But I’ll admit that compared to some here on MN I am rather lax about food hygiene (late 30s and never had food poisoning though...)

Eh????

Sometimes MN is so far removed from reality it's untrue

If it's shop bought keep it. If home made chuck.

Where is mayo in shops?
On the shelf. For ages. My mind is truly boggled with this one

Throwing it away would be a ridiculous waste!

Report
thepeopleversuswork · 22/05/2020 13:36

Technically you should probably throw it away due to listeria risk but I have to say I've done this dozens of times and not once got ill.

Shop-bought mayonnaise is full of preservatives. If Its home made I wouldn't risk it.

Its pasteurised egg with oil and vinegar. It'll be fine

We often forget to ours back in the fridge until the next day and never had any negative effects of that! :)

Good grief!

Homemade and yes, throwing it away would make sense.

But shop bought? Stick it in the fridge and don't give it another thought!

Shop bought: fine.
It's pasteurised.
Full of oil and salt - both good preservatives.
And, anyway, it's fine.
