I always SWORE I wouldn't do the bloody things, I don't approve of them, I think they are a symptom of the whole "gimme gimme" culture I so heartily despise, and the bloody party ought to bloody well be enough, and they should all say "thank you for having me" and be bloody grateful to be buggering off with a slice of squished cake wrapped in a tissue.

So WHY THE FUCK am I sat here trawling ebay for job lots of novelty finger monsters and little pots of silly putty?

I know what you eman...Partybags are kinda stupid...I have done them when my boys had a party, because everyone does them...but there is always just cheap tat in it...and well...just urgh... but wanted to blend in, lol!
Another thing I had to come accustomed to was the thing wiht the cake going home in the partybag...in Germany the cake is eaten there and then, but then german birthday cakes tend to be of the cream gateau variety...would not look nice once put into a partybag, lol...

I too hate party bags, I never had them until I moved to Kent when I was 10, and I can remember coming home from that party feeling I was the bees knees!. Now DC just expect it and I gave very cross with any DC who dares ask for one, and if they come upto me at the end of a party, I tend to ignore them, until the end - and woe betide my DDs they know not to ask.

As for party bag bits, I popped into Sainsburys this evening and they have some staionary bits and pieces in the sale :-

Pencil cases from 10p(they are see through ones)
I bought denim type handbag pencil cases for 50p
Glitter gel pens(mini ones 6 in a pack) I think these were 29p
Multi colour gel pens 3 for 39p
They had other bits and pieces too.

Its DDs birthday on Sunday, so I have been having a good luck round.

Also they had a really good stationary kit for 80p but I needed 7 and they only had 2!

I don't like all the party bag pressure either and those you get at parties in play centres where they do the bags have the worst sort of crap in them. I haven't rebelled and refused to do party bags but what I have done is instead of all the bits and pieces just given a book, cake and a balloon. A friend recently did the same and no-one has complained. I get the books from The Book People and buy the sets where a single book can work out at 99p (or less).

My concession is that we have a treasure hunt - and each child gets their prize (this year I have got a pack of 10 books from the book people and they can have 1 each, and a couple left over for ds).
Cake gets eaten at the party, doesn't go home.
No bags at all.

i agree that the plastic tat is really annoying but ds(4) gets so excited when he goes to a party and has a party bag. I find it quite sweet that his day can be absolutely made by a couple of 99p gifts in a plastic bag...It doesn't seem much, really. It's not like you have to put an Ipod and an x-box in there.

I do give party bags but only put sweets, 'own brand' funsize bars etc & cake. Even my own children aged 5 & 9 agree the pastic tat is a waste of time. My nephew once had a football party and they all got a cheap football (about 80p from cash and carry) plus cake and that seemed to go down ok

I bluddy hate em. Cheap plastic junk ends up in the vacuum cleaner in three hours.

Just give each child a slab of cake wrapped inp paper napkin (so the little bastards don't grind it into your floors) and a note saying you've made a £20 donation to buy a goat in Malawi. That ought to shut their mothers up if they feel like a moan, and kick off some interesting discussions in other people's houses about charitable giving etc...

Some of my kid's most treasured little playthings are from party bags. They remember whose party they came from, some have lasted for years! They have a special box each for keeping the tat in and I'm happy in the knowledge that not me, DH, DD or DS will ever have to buy a pencil again in our whole lives, even if we all live to be 100.

I do not for one second believe that giving or receiving party bags has made my DCs horribly materialistic.

Dd1 (15) still insists on them for her birthday 'parties'. She gets all the stuff herself - breaks up packs of soaps, nail varnishes, emery boards then packs them out with sweets.

So you see it just goes on and on......
