To think that as long as people continue to read the Daily Mail and Express, this country is doomed

Written by the rich, who pretend to be concerned for the poor. And the really sad thing is, people believe what they read.

Ohflippineck Wed 11-Sep-19 11:00:16

Spot on.

BogglesGoggles Wed 11-Sep-19 11:00:36

And yet freedom of press is imperative to a good country.

BunchMunch Wed 11-Sep-19 11:01:48

Much like most politicians, royalty etc etc.

BuzzShitbagBobbly Wed 11-Sep-19 11:06:00

Would you rather it was just the right-on, woke washed Guardian (for example) that was the official newspaper of the country then?

When you start to decide what people can and cannot (or even should and should not) read, then you are on a dangerous path.

You or I may not like the Mail or Express, but that's tough shit in a free country. In some ways they are a useful mirror to the rest of the press as well, who ALL have their own biased viewpoints as it shows different sides to every story.

TeaForDad Wed 11-Sep-19 11:13:04

The mail are the only ones reporting on Muslim rape gangs and trans kids

ShippingNews Wed 11-Sep-19 11:15:01

I'm just glad that we have freedom of speech, and a free press. What you think is valid journalism, might not appeal to others.

Viticulture Wed 11-Sep-19 11:15:05

It isn't a free press when it's controlled by billionaires who get to lobby the government to keep them on side so they can win elections.

Gone2far Wed 11-Sep-19 11:16:04

I have a friend who was a whistleblower on corruption in Foreign Aid. None of the press would print it except the Daily Mail. So, yes, YABVU.

CendrillonSings Wed 11-Sep-19 11:18:40

Yes of course, let’s start banning all the press you don’t like. What could go wrong?

Gone2far Wed 11-Sep-19 11:19:10

..and it's only the Times and Spectator who have reported on trans issues in a way that respects Women's Rights. The Guardian have been utterly lamentable on this.

TimeForDinnerDinnerDinner Wed 11-Sep-19 11:21:50

YABU for attempting to be ''right on'.
Utter nonsense.

ermwhatda Wed 11-Sep-19 11:27:06

I read all the papers online except 'the scum'. I read the Daily Star, Daily Mail, the Express, my local paper, the Guardian, the Metro, and Telegraph articles that don't hide behind the paywall. I watch the BBC news, Sky news, Al Jazeera, CNN, and Euronews.

I do this for balance. I'm aware that all media sources have specific biases, and often these days it seems the important 'international' news is buried under fluff opinion pieces and celebrity gossip.

IMO, stick to just one source, and you often don't get the full picture.

Gone2far Wed 11-Sep-19 11:40:55

I'd recommend you add the ft to the list. It's non-partisan and excellent on foreign news. It is behind a paywall, but I believe there's nothing wrong in being asked to pay for decent journalism.

Meadowland Wed 11-Sep-19 11:43:29

@Viticulture. Exactly

AtmosClock Wed 11-Sep-19 11:43:51

Who said anything about banning papers? Is this a reading comprehension difficulty?

Moonmelodies Wed 11-Sep-19 11:46:38

Aren't all newspaper writers rich?

JessicaWakefieldSV Wed 11-Sep-19 11:49:10

YABU and extremely naive. Read a wide range of news or you’re in a bubble of your own making. Would you rather we all read the guardian? The woke rag that refuses to report on women’s rights issues if it upsets the menz?

Hereward1332 Wed 11-Sep-19 11:49:35

Really what you are saying is that the country is doomed because some people don't share the same bias as you.

You could be right, but I doubt you have a better system.

BuzzShitbagBobbly Wed 11-Sep-19 11:50:05

And the really sad thing is, people believe what they read.

Whereas you are the only really enlightened one, right?
You aren't taken in by anything biased and know the real truth etc.

It's the same POV as people who post conspiracy theories on facebook telling the "sheeple" to wake up.

We're all biased, whether we like it or not (and we're all fed a diet of what the press deems suitable for us according to each of their news values). Being aware of that and trying to understand and engage with other opinions and sources is the only thing we can do about it.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed Wed 11-Sep-19 11:50:53

Yes let’s all read the Guardian

No one represents the average working class person more that Owen Jones

He speaks for us grin

MsTSwift Wed 11-Sep-19 11:51:19

The mail were good about the Stephen Lawrence case when they printed names and pictures of the accused and invited them to sue

PrestonNotHeston Wed 11-Sep-19 11:52:38

Delightful irony of the OP responding only once, selecting a post that chimed with his/her opinion.

BuzzShitbagBobbly Wed 11-Sep-19 11:53:36

I'm not sure this thread went the OP was expecting wink

PlinkPlink Wed 11-Sep-19 11:53:59

I don't understand...

Just those two?

Every single media outlet has a bias. They all have their own agendas.

Take every single news story from every news company with a pinch of salt.
