I have worn 'sliders' instead of slippers for years, sometimes with socks thick fluffy ones and now my teens laugh and tell their friends I was way ahead of the crowd

I can confirm it is possible to wear socks with flipflops if the socks are thin and stretchy rather than sports type socks. I've done it more than once when dashing out to bring the washing in when raining, it's not exactly my go-to choice of footwear though, and would never do it in public!

I do it for 20 sec at the pool - take shoes off at door of changing room, replace with flip flops and walk to changing cubicle with socks and flip flops. If your DH is walking down your local HIgh St with socks and flip flops, especially if they are the ones with a toe post, YANBU.
