AIBU?

Our AIBU? podcast - let us know what you think

Hello Hello,

We’d like to draw your attention to our new AIBU? podcast hosted by Lucy Porter and Aasmah Mir (download on Acast, Spotify or Apple Podcasts).

The first three episodes are up now and feature Lucy and Aasmah discussing the dilemmas, modern etiquette problems and weird pieces of behaviour thrown up in AIBU? threads - plus each week they drag in a celebrity guest (Ed Byrne, Mark Dolan and Tim Dowling among others) and for a quickfire YABU/YANBU round.

You can find out more here (including Lucy and Aasmah’s own personal views on penguin bollards).

Basically it’s our shot at seeing whether AIBU can translate successfully into podcast form (given that quite a few other people were already trying it without so much as a by-your-leave, tsk). We’d love to know what you think - please give it a try on Apple Podcasts, Acast or Spotify and as ever we’d love to have your feedback as it’s very much a work in progress.
And of course do feel free to share far and wide.

Big thanks in advance.

Please remove the sound of what I can only assume is meant to be wine being poured from a glass or perhaps tea being poured from a great height into a cup. I HATE that noise!! OK I have misophonia when it comes to that sound and it’s being interspersed like a sting throughout the podcast and I had to switch it off. It’s not just the sound that annoys me, it’s the thinking behind it. It’s the aural equivalent of those ‘prosecco time’ glittery signs and conjures up whimsical visual cliches of handbags and shoes (aren’t ALL women into these frivolous things?!) I just can’t get past the front of the podcast to listen!! Sorry. AIBU Grin

Oh I just listened to the trailer for it and the noise came in right at the end and I now know it’s supposed to be a nod to the podcast sponsorship by a GIN company. Mums like gin don’t they? I’ll just rifle down the back of the sofa I’m sure I’ve got a bottle down there... squeeze one in before the school run Smile

Has them been out for a while?

Just there was an AIBU one started last year and the episode I listened to was just people commenting on posters comments. Some were not very nice comments either.

Found it a bit odd that two mumsnetters were seeking out threads (they even said that had to to less popular threads to find podcast content because of MNers trying to avoid journalists putting them in papers.

Also seemed a bit odd for them to mention usernames and make comments on posters or reply to their comments knowing the person can't reply unless they were one of the twenty listeners of the podcast at the time.

If they wanted to comment and take part on the threads and the discussion then surely it makes more sense to just post on the thread?

Seems a bit of a faff deliberately seeking out juicy threads on the less trafficked part of the site and then read it all and respond to it and users on a podcast they likely won't have been listening to anyway.

Just checked my podcast app an no it's a different one:

This is the one I found and it's been out since 2017 but only a few episode.

I liked it. I think it balanced a few things quite well and I think it kept the anonymity of the posters quite well - and as a poster comments above it was not snide 'in judgement' of posters.

I liked the conversational tone and like most things I think it will warm up once it gets going. I found the two presenters very easy to listen to.

The only thing I would say is that on Mumsnet it's difficult to find real people in real life who also do it (because I realise there's a secret code and you're not supposed to tell anyone Grin )

So it's nice to hear the forum talked about in a conversational style but it felt a teeny tiny bit like it was an outsider's view, rather than Mumsnetters catching up.

Little bits like - "We'll get our producer to post..." And the Male voice over saying something like "To contact them" rather than "us" in reference to MNHQ.

It's similar to how the forum always seems to balance itself slightly better when MNHQ blue posters pop up conversationally in off topic threads, it just has more of a community feel. So if there was a way of bridging that divide in the podcast it would be better Gin

Can I ask, are topics taken from AIBU threads?

If so, I think I’d be disinclined to start a thread or post on AIBU, for fear that it will end up on a podcast.

PoliticalBiscuit · 19/03/2019 18:06

Boom tish, it's more general and kind. I've only heard a couple of episodes and like you felt a bit panicked about the thought of a thread being torn apart. But they've kept away from that.

It's not direct quotes of threads, or spoken of too in depth so it could be outing.

Eg they discuss best ways to resign but it is not the format "Poster called Harmony63 who worked in civil service once told her famous boss to shove his job up his beloved Jaguar X3 tailpipe" (or other revealing characteristics)

It's more "One poster said she hates her job and would like to resign in a petty way" , then the commentators chat, and every now and then chip in with "Oh yes, I liked the poster that said she'd resign with a mariachi band if she could".

I was just thinking the other day that I wished there was an audio version of Mumsnet.

IC4nSeeYourPixels · 19/03/2019 19:36

@BoomTish this one by Mumsnet doesn't seem to single people out but the one by two mumsnetters I liked to above did, they even went digging to the less public parts looking for content knowing some women post away from AIBU and the busier parts of the site to avoid being used in articles etc.

I am liking the podcast and the conversational style but I must admit the sound balance is off quite badly.
Not sure if it has an impact but I was listening in the car on the apple podcast app and the ads were really loud and then I had to turn the sound up to hear the presenters.

Like the general conversational style rather than discussing the individual posters but I also hope we get some interesting AIBU like the wedding, parking childcare ones!!

One of the Brexit adds was offensively loud.

How do I download it ..link not working

@PoliticalBiscuit
Was it an ad MN have placed there? Or one from the podcast app? Some of the free podcast apps stick ads at random throughout podcasts and they are often louder than the show.

Puddled if you search AIBU in your podcast player it'll show up. Here's the link from the search in my podcast player.

I had the same issue as AHobbyaweek - also listening in the car. The ads and the sound of one of the presenters laughing was absolutely ear bleeding, then the other presenter would start speaking and be practically inaudible. I did enjoy the content though.
