To think mysogeny should not be made a hate crime?

Of course mysogeny is rife (sadly), but women make up 50% of the population so we are hardly a minority, like disabled, BME or religious minorities.

There are plenty of laws to protect women against men’s aggression and plenty of laws to protect both sexes against discrimination.

I can’t even see what practical application this has and would tie up valuable police time.

And how can we have equality if 50% of the population are pitted against the other 50%? Surely we can’t have a situation where a man is charged with mysogeny for putting vile stuff on the internet, yet a woman could say the same about him and not be prosecuted?

We’re in danger of alienating reasonable, decent men by having a law which would cast them as the villeins and of giving entitled men more reasons to abuse women.

On the other hand I think there should be something to prevent the type of abuse Diane Abbott and other female politicians suffered but this doesn’t need to be female centred but applicable to men and women.

I’m happy to be convinced otherwise if the arguments are good.

YABVU. Back in apartheid South Africa the oppressed blacks far outnumbered the oppressing whites. Should we have ignored the horror of apartheid because the group suffering was the majority?

I’ve met quite a lot of misogynistic women? Some of it is very subtle?

Noone has said half the population is against the other. You are confusing misogyny with men. Plenty of women perpetuate misogyny, plenty of men are able to recognise the shared humanity.

Surely it should be illegal for anyone to express hatred of others, no matter which groups are involved. It should be a basic human right to live without aggression and/or persecution due to any characteristic.

Then, with all due respect, go look it up. Go read and research. Then come on a mainly female dominated space back to discuss.

YABU OP, I would like to see misogyny classified as hate crime because it is. And it could be very helpful in tackling DV and sexual violence. It will not alienate reasonable, decent men as they are not misogynists.

dionne. But there are already laws against sexual violence, domestic violence as well as coersive abuse.

Racially aggravated assault is a useful charge though innit, OP, carries a longer sentence. Also, it has a particular meaning for the complainant to have the racial aspect of the crime recognised. This can also give useful data in terms of tracking attitudes and the impact of specific incidents - eg, the raise in racially motivated assault and harassment after Brexit. Plus the general use of having clear data against which to put resources into tackling the issue. The list goes on, really. Could you really not have figured this out for yourself?

There's more to misogyny than violence. What about websites and bloggers that call for other men to discriminate, harass and violate women? The writer may not have actually committed those crimes himself, but by urging others to do it he's committing a hate crime. Namely misogyny.

Basically use racism as a yardstick. If it’s not ok to say to a black person because you believe black people are it’s not ok to do it to women.

I believe it would be a useful law to add to the armoury of weapons against criminals, I doubt it would be used often, but there are occasions when someone does something hateful against others solely because of their sex, and they should be punished for it.

Aren't penalties harsher for things that are considered a hate crime? If so, then no, I don't think it should be considered a hate crime, there's too much of a grey area when women make up 50% of the population. How could the police tell if a crime has been committed because the victim is a woman or just because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time?

It would be like saying that male victims don't matter as much as female victims, and surely that the opposite of what we want when we're looking for equality?

Your iPad spelled 'mysogeny' for you? Where did you buy it, iPoundland? Was it next to the politics book range by the Spice Girls?

Nails the same could apply with other types of hate crime. The answer is not to ignore it, but to ensure laws are clearly written and understood

Are there enough laws to curb male violence against women? I'm pretty sure that most rapists walk free and every week a couple of women are murdered by a current or former partner...

Because they search for this thing called evidence. They find it very useful when trying to prosecute someone.

crazy shouldn’t there be a law to prevent online abuse and harassment of both men and women? I can see injustice in a man being prosecuted for online abuse of a woman, but the woman could do the same and nothing happens? No logic to it

rita. Surely it’s not ok to be derogatory to BME, women or men in any form?

nails. That’s how I see it. We want equality. There should be laws to protect men and women. Seeing men as these big thugs who terrorise women is ignoring our sons, our brothers, husbands and our fathers and every decent man out there.

I think it divides more than it unites. We all need protection against hate crimes.
