To hate the soppy Christmas ads (I see you, John Lewis) and how they take a classic song and destroy it

I hate all those wet, faux sentimental Christmas ads with a purple passion. I particularly hate how they take a classic song and turn it into something that sounds like it is being sung by a dying dog..that needs a wee..and a poo. Don't get me wrong I looove Christmas but those adverts..just..no!

Agreed.

I have struggled to understand the hype about these showy ads over the last few years. What is the point?!

I make it a point to avoid them. Made it all the way till just before Christmas when I was deep in thought and accidentally watched the John Lewis atrocity.

I hope it's less depressing than the one with the sad old man on the moon

My respect for John Lewis has diminished ever since they started with those pathetic adverts.

I've just been watching Al Jazeera news about Lebanon and also the Rohinga people of Burma. What a lot of good John Lewis could have done with that money instead.

YANBU. I quite enjoyed the Tesco advert as I think some of the "tense" moments are quite realistic.

But, JL adverts are shit.

I really hate this trend for slowed down songs sung in some weird cockney-esque accent by a woman with a creepy breathy voice.

No, gimme a bit of fucking Wham or Slade any day

I really really hate what they do to music and how popular the songs become
Talk about crimes against music!

I've just watched the M&S ad, quite like it. The John Lewis one is ok, bit meh but not as bad as previous years.

So far I've not crossed any of them off my shopping list.

That's actually Elbow's version on John Lennon's song and I really like it. I love Guy's voice.

I too love Guy Garvey's voice, and think it is a gorgeous cover version.

How dare they ruin a BEATLES SONG

Speaking of which, the Sainsbury's 2014 Christmas ad was a total rip-off of the video for Paul McCartney's Pipes of Peace. See them both on YouTube.

I don't think you can do anything to make a Beatles song sound worse, they were hardly singers Grin and it was barely music Grin
They never wrote their own music anyway, if you believe the documentaries which say lots of high hippy pop artists of the time contributed.

The ads are far better than the originals in lots of cases, my gripe is they become so popular at Christmas, they aren't heard again.

Oh thank God for this thread. I voiced the same opinion at work this morning (apathological hatred of these ads) - and everyone looked at me like I was a total MONSTER.

Yes I loathe them. It's not just a Christmas thing, advertisers have been doing this for years. The formula is simple:

  1. Take a classic guitar-based song.
  2. Ditch the guitar and get a female vocalist to sing it slowly.
  3. Count the £££££££s and $$$$$$$$$$s

You can use a male vocalist at step two but must take a couple of the pound or dollar signs out.

I used to love the Christmas ads but now they are all such a big production, I've become a bit fed up of them. They've turned me into a bit of an eye rolling cynic

And the female vocalists always have that wimpy will o the wisp voice with no substance. These ads are nauseating!
