To let 12 year old read Curious incident of the dog in the night time?

Bright 12 year old wants to read it based on suggestions on his kindle.
I read it ages ago so can't really remember it but reviews mention a lot of swearing.
Anyone read it recently? Any 12 year olds?

I think its fine, I was going to suggest it for my 12 year old reluctant reader but when I looked at it again I thought the story might not be pacy enough for him, but the actual content seemed fine.

It's nothing he won't hear at school and the empathetic insight into other lives far outweighs the swearing if we're doing a "balance sheet".

My eldest two read it around that age.

The librarian told me there is a teen-appropriate version of that book and an adult version as well. So it might be worth looking for the teen-appropriate version. I'm not sure how you tell though.

DS2 read it aged 11 and saw the stage production aged 12. Loved it. Occasional swear words and all.

There is swearing in it, yes, but nothing a 12-year-old won't hear daily at school anyway and it's perfectly appropriate for a kid that age. Loads of schools teach it.

Alpaca, sometimes they do "adult" versions of YA books. The book is still the same content wise but has a blander (more adult) cover. Could that be what she meant?

There was a 'teen' version of the book published so that might be worth a go if you're concerned, but to be honest I think the regular version is fine.

DD2 read this at 12 and it was a year 8 set text for DD1.

It has the word 'fuck' 8n it at least once. Depends on your view on that. You could read it aloud to your dc and skim a few parts.
