Sorry, I don't follow your op-and what's a PG?

Isn't PG parental guidance? i.e. parent's job to understand whether it will suit their child? It is not a U.

Oh that! Sounds a crock of shit.

At 10 I think YAB(a bit)U about the whole firework and kidnapping thing - presumably she has the talk at school about the dangers of fireworks ever year?

YWNBU though if it was because of the dogs dying. My husband is refusing to watch it because he can't understand why that would be entertainment he's not got over Marley and Me yet.

That doesn't sound too bad for a PG. Parental Guidance, has to cover quite a lot, as it is all the way up to a 12A.

I'm not going to see it - pregnant and can't even get through the trailer without crying.

This is exactly why I use my own judgement and don't trust ratings

I give you Watership Down!

As pp said pp means parental guidence.

Dd would cry at this (12) but can watch other stuff that is above 12 and no be bothered. I always checked out films when she was younger. Not so much now, unless its out of her age range.

Its not hard to find out the details of the film. Some kids would be fine. Some not

We're going to see this today.

But I'm the idiot that took an 11 year old to see 'A Monster Calls' without checking what it was about. That should never have been a 12a. I sobbed all the way through!!

Meh.

In the Lion King, a character murders his brother and is ripped to death by hyenas.

In Snow White a woman repeatedly tries to murder a teenaged girl.

The Rescuers is a U and that's about a kidnapped child.

Harry Potter is about a small boy battling a genocidal maniac.

If she's nearly 10 I suggest you work on her resillience rather than worrying about the rating.

Of course she's had stranger danger talks from school and us

But surely for a lot of children their biggest fears are somehow losing their mum n dad
I.e. Death or something

Or being kidnapped

She wasn't upset about the dog dying as it doesn't really die as such it just turns into another dog

It's spirt goes on straight away then it's a puppy again in an instant

But it was the boy who started the fire and the kidnapping that has terrified her

I honestly think kidnapping is a bit much for a PG

I always check the bbfc.co.uk website before taking my son to the cinema. It explains exactly why they awarded a rating and you can decide for yourself if it's suitable for your child.

What part of "Parental Guidance" do you not understand?

I bought Marley and Me a few years ago, but DD refused to watch it, so I never have either. Yesterday we saw a bus with the ad for 'A Dog's Purpose' - which I'd not heard of before - and wondered aloud what it was about, DD said 'I bet the dog dies'. Thanks for the heads up that he does so repeatedly- I shall definitely not be taking her to see that (she's 18) ... nor will I take myself or DH.

Although actually v good

Op i really think it's a case of knowing your own kids isn't it? I'm pretty relaxed about ratings now after a family film rated a u gave my DS horrific nightmares and anxiety for weeks on end, whereas one of his fave films that is nowhere near as awful is a 12. It's a bit hit and miss I find so I check up online now and make my own mind up

They have certified it as PG. That means its up to the parent to decide if the content is suitable for your child.
My DD aged 10 would be ok watching this. Sad but not traumatised.

Libitina · 01/05/2017 08:45

Pretty much the whole cinema sobbed at Toy Story 3 and that's a U rating. I'm still too traumatised to watch it again.

Sad

Cinema ratings have loosened considerably to take in the maximum number of people they can get in the cinema. I don't think you can really on them anymore and you have to read detailed synopses and reviews

They assume that all or most children have been exposed to levels of violence than many/ most have not

It's money
