Grand National

Was wondering how many bets are reasonable for Grand National, also if any understood the language, sorry for being a PITA Flowers

Some places are offering to pay up for positions 1-5 so I'm guessing if your horse is in the first 5 you get something. Will it be at the stake advertised for winning? Is this what each way is?

What's your favourite for the GN?

Total newbie, my sister got a voucher for inviting friends. So DH is going to give it a go, with 4 of us putting £2.50 on a horse.

Good luck to everyone else Star

Arghh. I've just started a thread. Each way is half the bet and fifth gets less than first.

If you put a £5 each way bet you are betting 10 in total. £5 on it to win and £5 to come 2nd, 3rd, 4th and some cases 5th. You get less for each place. My fave is vievx lion rouge. Good luck.

i have 6, all either 25 or 50p each way, 5 places am a tight bastard so more than likely will get a max of about a quid back, if they dont all fall like last year that is
i pick by names that take my fancy so this years fav is thunder and roses

If you place a £1 each way bet you will pay £2; if they win at 20-1 you will get the £20 for first place and then 1/4 of the odds so £5 added on. If the horse is 2nd,3rd,4th or 5th you will just get the 1/4 odds so £5 back - no difference in what you get back if they are 2nd or 5th. Hope that makes sense!!

If you bet each way, you are effectively placing two bets - a win bet and a place bet. The place bet usually pays out 1/4 odds. If the horse wins, both the win and place bets will pay out.

So if horse is 100-1 and you put £1 each way (two £1 bets - £2) if it wins you will get £100 (win) plus £25 (place). If it places (can vary how many places are paid out on but this will be confirmed by bookie) you receive £25. Plus stake back, minus any applicable taxes.

I've put three small bets on, two each ways and win, and have a horse in the work sweepstake too Grin. Other than the GN, I only bet on the horses if I'm actually at a race-course (I go a couple of times a year) so I like to be interested in a few runners.

You can choose whether to have the odds at the time you place your bet, or the odds at the start of the race.

The only odds I am interested in is that the horses all finish safely.

I've got an e/w on Saint Are and Perfect Candidate, and The Young Master to win. I don't pick scientifically, though, and I've only managed to pick a winner once in the last 20 years (had it at 66-1 though so was a very nice surprise).

myoriginal I won't be, and I have no risk factors for heart problems - but thanks for your concern.

I am a horse owner, rider and lover I am aware injuries can happen in the field and leisure riding, but pushing horses to ever extreme lengths when it all comes down to money making isn't right. 47 have died at the grand national festival since 2000. People who bet have blood on their hands.

I just hate how horses are used for money in this way. 5 horses died at the national festival.

So as I said, hoping all horses come home in one piece today.

I agree Whatslove. Putting the horses through this when we know they are animals that have to be euthanised if they fracture a leg or shoulder is abhorrent. I'm not quite as against flat racing.

I've bet on Definitly [sic] Red and The Young Master. DW has bet on a couple, probably Samuri [sic].

I'm with Whatslove too.

For those that enjoy blood sports, I hear Tesco Lasagne is strongly fancied, though.

And sorry to all of you who bet on Perfect Candidate. I know for a fact that he won't win.

How does he know, you ask.

Because I got Perfect Candidate in the office sweepstake.

I'm with Whatslove, PNGirl and HellonHeels on this. It's a horrible, cruel event and the people who go and watch are amongst those to blame for the injuries and deaths of the horses. Wish it would be banned Angry

You don't love Horses if you support horse racing unless you mean in the way that Bacon eaters love pigs.

On average three Horses die, per nationwide meetings.

My track record in the sweepstake is worse than Leicester's league title defence.

He'll probably fall at the first fence.

Still, good luck - I'll get a better return on that than any of the actual bets I placed.
